Abstract

A phytochemical investigation of three species of Malaysian Dipterocarpus contributed to the isolation of 22 compounds which consist of 15 oligostilbenoids, 2 terpenes, 2 coumarins, and 3 flavonoids. The isolation of flavonoids in the Dipterocarpaceae family is very limited. Moreover, 4-methoxepigallocatechin-3-O-O-(3-methyl) gallate (20) was isolated for the first time in the plant. The occurrence of 4-O-methylgallocatechin (18) and its stereoisomer; 4-O’-methylepigallocatechin (19) was first reported in the Dipterocarpaceae family. This study also reported the existence of several types of oligostilbenoids such as davidiol A (8), stenophyllol B (9), isohopeaphenol (11), resveratrol (1), and ampelopsin E (10) which are the first occurrence in Dipterocarpus genus and suggested a significant chemotaxonomic relationship between Dipterocarpus, more closely to Vatica which is classified under Dipterocarpeae tribe.

Abstract

Songi (Dillenia serrata) is a tree endemic to Southeast Sulawesi and its stem bark been used in folk medicine. Nonetheless, only a handful scientific knowledge regarding chemistry and biological activities has been investigated on the plant. The present study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity of the stem bark of the plant. Methanol extract and organic fractions (petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, and methanol) of the dried powdered stem bark of songi were evaluated for phytochemical screening, total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), DPPH, FRAP, and XO in vitro assays. Flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, steroids, and saponins present in the extract. TPC and TFC in extract were 59.2 mg GAE/g and 23.4 mg QE/g. The contents in organic fractions were in solvent-dependent manner (methanol>ethyl acetate>petroleum ether). Extract and fractions scavenged DPPH radicals (48.2–59.7%) at 100 μg/mL compared to ascorbic acid, trolox, and gallic acid (90.3–93.8%). FRAP values varied from 0.8–3.4 μg/μg equivalent trolox amount (quercetin and gallic acid were 25.7 dan 32.4 μg/μg, respectively). They also inhibited xanthine oxidase (15.3–50.3%) at 100 μg/mL (allopurinol, 98.2%). The study concluded the potential of methanol extract and organic fraction of the stem bark of songi, thus highlighted the prospect of songi to be used in herbal and drugs development from nature.

Abstract

Leucaena leucocephala belongs to the family Leguminosae and is one of the fastest-growing leguminous trees. L. leucocephala leaves have a great potential as an alternative protein source for animal feed. However, the presence of anti-nutritional compounds, such as mimosine and tannins, limits their direct utilisation by animals, as these compounds can reduce nutrient digestibility and impair animal performance. Ensiling has been widely recognised as an effective processing method to reduce these compounds. This study evaluated the proximate composition, fibre fractions, mineral composition, and anti-nutritional compounds of unensiled (fresh) and ensiled L. leucocephala leaves from Wondergraze and Taramba varieties to assess their potential as animal feed resources. Overall, the ensiling process significantly influenced the nutritional profiles of L. leucocephala leaves in both Wondergraze and Tarramba varieties. Ensiling enhanced crude protein content while reducing crude fibre, NDF and moisture levels, indicating improved digestibility and feed intake potential. Although slight reductions in ash content, gross energy and certain minerals were observed, most nutrients were largely retained, suggesting that fermentation did not compromise the overall nutritional value of the forage. Varietal differences were evident, with Wondergraze demonstrating better fibre preservation and smaller energy losses compared to Tarramba, highlighting its potentially superior fermentation efficiency. Importantly, ensiling markedly reduced anti-nutritional compounds, particularly mimosine and tannins, thereby improving feed safety and suitability. These findings demonstrate that ensiling is an effective processing method to enhance the nutritional quality and practical utilisation of L. leucocephala leaves as animal feeds, while also revealing cultivar-specific responses that are valuable for targeted feed formulation and forage management strategies.
