Abstract

This research studies working students' perspectives on the flipped classroom model as a strategy to enhance their reading skills. Using qualitative research methods, semi structured interviews are conducted with 20 working students balancing work and studies. The findings show that 75% of participants perceive the flipped classroom approach as significantly improving their reading skills by allowing them to prepare theirself before class. However, 25% of the participants show that its effectiveness depends on the quality of materials given. These findings highlight the importance of designing high quality of material to maximize the benefits of flipped classrooms for diverse learners. Future research can explore ways to optimize flipped classroom materials for students woith limited time. For addition, educators need to address technological and accessibility challenges to ensure inclusivity.

Abstract

This classroom action research seeks to demonstrate how differentiated instruction might promote students' learning autonomy in a writing class setting. This study included 50 English department students from a private institution in Malang. According to the findings of the preliminary study, students were unmotivated to participate in writing activities because they thought they were boring and uninteresting. They were detected paying little attention to the assigned writing assignments and, as a result, demonstrating poor writing performance. To promote student learning autonomy, the researchers implemented with differentiated instructions in several writing exercises. Using two cycles of classroom action research, the researchers seek to solve the instructional challenge using potential learning strategies. After adopting differentiated instruction, the researchers assessed the students' writing scores and compared them to success criteria. The first cycle resulted in 70% of students meeting the success criterion since they were still unfamiliar with the differentiated instructions. In the second round, the pupils successfully met 85% of the criteria. The findings showed that creating differentiated instructions provided pupils with a favorable challenge. It was evident from the behavioral changes of pupils who exhibited greater enthusiasm for following the directions. Furthermore, the students demonstrated the established learning autonomy, which resulted in improved writing performance. These research findings add to the enrichment of the educational component, since future teachers or researchers may focus on a more comprehensive covering of this teaching technique.

Abstract

This article examines the speech delivered in a YouTube video by Haris Azhar and Fatia Maulidiyanti, which led to a defamation lawsuit filed by a high-ranking Indonesian official. Using a forensic linguistic approach, the study investigates whether the utterances constitute defamatory speech or protected public criticism. A descriptive qualitative method is employed to analyze the lexical, syntactic, pragmatic, and discourse-level features of the video. The analysis identifies three categories of speech—false factual claims, critical opinions, and data-driven statements—and finds that the utterances fall primarily within the latter two, characterized by cautious language such as “allegedly” and “according to reports.” These linguistic mitigations indicate a lack of intent to defame and reflect research-based criticism. The study concludes that the speech acts, from a forensic linguistic perspective, do not fulfill the criteria for criminal defamation, but rather exemplify constitutionally protected freedom of expression.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' reading skills in descriptive texts through the use of picture word media at SMP Negeri 1 Umalulu in the 2023/2024 academic year. The study subjects consisted of 50 students in grade VIII-A, including 25 boys and 25 girls. The research method used was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a mixed approach (qualitative and quantitative). Data were collected through interviews, reading tests, observations, and questionnaires. The study was conducted in two cycles. In the first cycle, activities included a pre-test and post-test I, which focused on learning descriptive texts. In the second cycle, learning continued with more intensive use of picture word media, and concluded with a post-test II. The results showed a significant improvement in students' reading skills. The average pre-test score of 44.6 increased to 64.6 in the post-test I in the first cycle. In the second cycle, the average score increased further to 80. Furthermore, in the first post-test, 26 students (52%) achieved a score of 70 or higher, while in the second post-test, this number increased to 42 students (84%). These findings indicate that the use of picture words is effective in improving descriptive text reading skills. Furthermore, student enthusiasm and engagement in the learning process also increased, as reflected in the observation results, which showed a high score (4), indicating the creation of an active and conducive learning environment.
