Abstract

So far, the trade and spice route historiography has focused on social, political, and economic aspects. This discussion is also fragmentarily or is part of another focus. No studies have discussed the relationship between local knowledge practices, spice routes, power networks, and Islamization. However, the spice trade and Islamization are two intersecting events important for their connection with the local culture. This article assumes that there was a local knowledge used as a strategy by the Banten rulers as a response to trade, Islamization, and power networks in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It finds that Sultan Maulana Yusuf’s policy, known as “gawe kuta baluwarti bata kalawan kawis”, was a local knowledge that continued to be used by Banten rulers throughout the sixteenth-seventeenth centuries. This local knowledge was transformed from its literal meaning of “building cities and fortresses from bricks and corals” into a metaphor representing development that considered the duality of Banten’s potential. This local knowledge became the foundation stone for the strategies of Banten’s rulers until Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa to respond the challenges posed by the trade, power network, and Islamization. This application of the local knowledge carried the Banten Sultanate to its peak of advancement during the reign of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (1651-1682). In his sponsorship of this local knowledge, the ruler of the Banten appears as a technocrat, trader, scholar, leader, and ruler who paved the way for the expansion of the Banten Sultanate. This local knowledge was passed down from generation to generation and remains the local knowledge of the Banten people today. This study reconstructs the historiography of the existing spice route by according local knowledge (gawe kuta baluwarti bata kalawan kawis), the leading role in shaping the expansion of the Banten Sultanate in the century of the spice trade and the extension of the spice route.

Abstract

Communities that can speak more than one language as a daily habit are not only happening in the present era but have long existed in the pesantren environment. However, multilingualism in pesantren is often only seen as a capacity enhancement of the santri's knowledge. On the other hand, the multilingual ability of the Santri is an asset in forming an attitude of religious moderation. This article then presents the results of qualitative research using the concept of additive multilingualism which focuses on pesantren students in Indonesia. Through observations, interviews, and literature review, this research can describe the reality of multilingualism in pesantren and its impact on the religious attitudes of its santri. It turns out that the religious moderation attitude of the students is closely related to the multilingual learning process in pesantren that takes place with technological restrictions. The application of additive multilingualism is aligned with the pillars of religious moderation in four ways. First, respect for locality is reflected in the Santri's habit of using local languages. Second, multilingualism is an expression of anti-violence, this is reflected in Santri's acceptance of linguistic and ethnic diversity as a brotherhood base. This is what manifests in the Third pillar by making santri a tolerant community as a result of learning from the reality of ethnic and linguistic diversity in their environment.  Fourth, the introduction of santri to foreign languages is directed to reaffirm their national commitment through the use of foreign languages in flag ceremonies. The limitation of technology in multilingual learning is also intended to keep students from the bad influence of technology and to maintain the discipline of students in maintaining a pesantren culture that is friendly to locality and sensitive to the times

Abstract

The tradition of Uang panai is the wisdom of the Bugis-Makassar tribe in Indonesia to honor women in the marriage process. Unfortunately, the amount of Uang panai is often the reason for criminal acts, such as fraud and theft, to fulfill the Uang panai. This study explores how audiences' reception of law news related to uang panai is based on Stuart Hall's theory and how it impacts the prevention of crime associated with this tradition. This article is written qualitatively, using a reception analysis of media news. The search for media news data was supported by in-depth interviews with purposively selected informants and complemented by literature studies. This research focuses on the theft of uang panai, which went viral and was widely responded to by the community. The results show three positions of audience acceptance, namely the dominant position that supports consistent law enforcement to create a deterrent effect. The negotiation position also supports law enforcement but offers customary reforms to make it cheaper and encourages people to act more wisely by facilitating uang panai. The existence of a community that promotes the uang panai tradition will reduce the pressure on men who are committed to marriage and be a deterrent to the criminal act of uang panai. The opposition rejects the application of formal law to perpetrators of theft for uang panai and suggests settlement by customary law. The opposition believes that understanding the sacredness of adat will effectively prevent crimes related to uang panai. The impact of legal reporting related to uang panai to avoid criminal acts appears in the form of public awareness of the consequences. Awareness of the consequences is born from the impact of the news that gives a deterrent effect, strengthens traditions, and encourages policy improvements.
