Abstract

Abstract

This article studies the meaning of Madurese proverbs commonly associated with violence stereotype of the Madurese. The analysis is conducted by using stylistic approach while the data are collected by means of documentary method. The findings show that Madurese proverbs represent a number of meanings related to violence, that is, physical violence, robust conviction and advice on violence. Those meanings do not necessarily justify the violent nature of the Madurese. Rather, they much imply the principles of Madurese people to strongly uphold self dignity, courage and righteousness. Further research using larger data of Madurese proverbs and other types of Madurese proverbs is suggested in order to obtain comprehensive depiction about Madurese values.

Abstract

This article attempts to investigate the shifts in translating the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence in M.C. Ricklefs’ book entitled A History of Modern Indonesia since c.1200. This descriptive qualitative research uses Catford’s translation shifts and Vinay and Darbelnet’s taxonomy of translation shifts as the theoretical groundwork in identifying the shifts and then analyzing their impact on the translation of the Proclamation text. After comparing the original and Ricklefs’ translation, this research finds16 shifts out of 19 pairs of units of translation including modulation, level shift, class shift or transposition, unit or rank shift, structural shift, equivalence, and adaptation. These shifts lead to a slight change in the text’s formality. Research in translation shifts is potentially biased since there are no clear-cut boundaries of units of translation. As this article uses units of translation at the word and phrase levels, further research can be conducted by considering more complex units. Key words: unit of translation, translation shift, translation, procedures, legal text.

Abstract

This article identifies and categorizes translation errors found in the translation of quotations in football stories posted on bola.com. Using functional approach, this descriptive qualitative research employs Nord’s taxonomy of translation errors as the theoretical groundwork in identifying the errors and then analyzing their functional impacts to the target quotations. After comparing the source and target translations, this research finds 13 (thirteen) errors, including pragmatic errors, text-specific errors, linguistic errors, and cultural errors. Overall, pragmatic error is found to be the most crucial type of error and most easily exposed. The findings imply that documentary translation approach in translating quotation in sport stories should not be rigidly used as this could sacrifice the expressive function that a quotation may serve. Keywords: translation errors, quotation, text function, documentary translation, sport story

Abstract

Web localization is not merely to translate the content or information contained within a website, but also how to customize it to make it acceptable and readable for the target audience. In doing so, translators need to recognize the preliminary aspects such as website type or purpose, target audience, and client’s instruction. On these bases, translators must then make translation judgments, whether certain elements should be translated. This article is qualitative descriptive research which expounds the reasons behind translators' decision to translate or not to translate parts of text in website localization process. The data were taken from 4 English source websites and their Indonesian versions. The findings show that the translators decide to translate parts of the source text to adapt to the source website type and the target audience. The translators decide not to translate some parts of the text due to some factors: website type or purpose, target audience, client’s instruction, and space availability. Therefore, it is suggested that those aspects must be heeded by any website translators so as to make their translation have better readability among the intended readers. Keywords: translatability, website localization, client instruction, audience, translator’s decision
