Abstract

Latar Belakang : Hasil pengobatan skizofenia menunjukkan sebanyak 85% mengalami penurunan fungsi.

Abstract

Oxidative stress caused by free radicals and long-term antipsychotic use in chronic schizophrenic patients may result in liver cell damage and impaired liver function. Folic acid is an exogenous antioxidant that can boost the antioxidant defense mechanism (Glutathione Reductase), lowering free radicals and improving liver function. Determine the correlation between adjuvant folic acid and liver function in chronic schizophrenic patients. This was a placebo-controlled, double-blinded randomized control trial. The study sample included 36 patients in the control group and 36 patients in the treatment group. Subjects were patients who had suffered from schizophrenia for at least 2 years and received antipsychotics. Research subjects in the treatment group received folic acid supplementation. The intervention was conducted for 21 days during hospitalization. The level of AST (U/L) and ALT (U/L) was measured before and after supplementation. Following folic acid supplementation, AST levels were significantly improved (26.950 U/L compared to prior to treatment 33.09 U/L, p= <0.001). ALT levels after treatment were increased but there was no significant difference observed (p= 0.835). Folic acid supplementation improves AST levels significantly.

Abstract

Background: Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) refer to a spectrum of congenital conditions involving atypical chromosomal, gonadal, or phenotypic development. Although recent studies have improved our understanding of the medical management of DSD, the psychosocial impact and the role of multidisciplinary care in addressing these challenges remain less well known. Objective: This review aims to examine the classification, diagnostic approaches, and medical and psychosocial challenges associated with DSD, while also highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary support. Methods: A narrative review was conducted to explore the current research and clinical guidelines on DSD, including studies on medical management and psychosocial interventions. Results: The review found that early diagnosis and management are essential to reducing life-threatening risks and psychosocial distress in individuals with DSD. The impact of societal stigma, gender identity complexities, and increased rates of anxiety and depression were observed to contribute to body image concerns. A multidisciplinary care team, involving psychiatrists, endocrinologists, and other specialists, was highlighted as critical for holistic patient care. Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in addressing both the medical and psychosocial aspects of DSD. While collaborative decision-making and individualized care strategies showed positive outcomes, further research is needed to optimize long-term health and quality of life for individuals with DSD.

Abstract

Introduction: Cancer causes a significant physical and emotional burden, not only for patients, but also for caregivers. Caregiver’s burden is associated with caring for a chronically ill family member, which would increase if role tensions and concerns related to cancer are high and/or if they are in poor physical and emotional health, such as depression or anxiety. This study aims to determine the relationship between depression and anxiety with the burden of caregivers of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.Method: A cross-sectional study with consecutive sampling involving caregiver of cancer patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sample filled out the DASS-21 and ZBI questionnaires to determine the degree of depression, anxiety, and caregiving burden. The relationship between variables was obtained using the Spearman test. Results: From 30 caregivers of cancer patients who received chemotherapy, 3 experienced mild depression, 1 experienced moderate depression, 7 experienced severe depression, and 2 experienced very severe depression. While 5 experienced mild anxiety, 3 experienced moderate anxiety, 4 experienced severe anxiety, and 5 experienced very severe anxiety. ZBI showed 18 with little or no burden, 3 with mild to moderate burden, 4 with moderate to severe burden, and 5 with severe burden. There is a significant correlation between the degree of depression and anxiety with the burden of caring for cancer patients who receive chemotherapy (p less than 0,001).Conclusion: Depression and anxiety are associated with the burden of caring for cancer patients who receive chemotherapy due to the tension and worry related to cancer with various symptoms and chemotherapy side effects.

Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by positive and negative symptoms, with antipsychotics effectively addressing the former but less so the latter. Recent studies suggest that physical exercise may help alleviate negative and cognitive symptoms, though its role is not well established. Objective: This review examines the role of physical exercise as a complementary intervention in the psychosocial rehabilitation of individuals with schizophrenia. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted, focusing on research exploring the effects of various exercise types on psychiatric symptoms, cognitive function, and physical health in individuals with schizophrenia. Results: Physical exercise was found to improve cognitive function, reduce negative symptoms, and mitigate the metabolic side effects of antipsychotic medications. Neurobiological changes, such as increased neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity, were also observed, contributing to better mental health and quality of life. Aerobic and anaerobic exercises were particularly effective in reducing psychiatric symptoms and enhancing social integration. Conclusion: Physical exercise offers significant benefits in schizophrenia care and should be integrated into multidisciplinary treatment strategies. Future research should focus on optimizing exercise protocols and assessing their long-term clinical impact.
