Abstract

This article will examine the efforts of a group of middle-class urban Muslims in cultivating the piety. It will trace the working logic of the formation of pious subject, as a point of departure to comprehend the increasing of religious zeal of the middle-class urban Moslem. By exploration on the activity of the employee and leaders of a number of companies in the Santri Eksekutif program, we argue that the effort to be a pious subject is often related to and interplay with the aspirations of Islamization of public institutions and with neoliberal ethics. Furthermore, we argue that more than a quest for identity, religious expressions that are public are a form of requirement to be ethical and pious subjet. Through this article we aim to (1) describe a form of ethical and pious subject, (2) explore the formation process of the ethical and pious subject, and (3) accentuate the interplay and complex relationship between the process of cultivating piety, aspirations of Islamization of public institutions, and with neoliberal ethics. This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork in Jakarta and Bogor.

Abstract

builds trust in mudhohi, namely people who carry out sacrifices on Eid al-Adha. This research is focused on the pattern and process of forming mudhohi trust through social capital. This research is a qualitative research, with a qualitative descriptive approach. The theory used in this research is Robert D. Putnamâs theory of social capital which provides a summary of social capital. Putnam argues that social capital is part of social life which includes networks, norms, and beliefs. Data collection techniques used in this study were interviews, observation, and literature studies. The results of the interviews show that in general PPPA Daarul Qur'an  has utilized social capital in the process of implementing the qurbani program through strengthening the Al-Qur'an  glorification program. In the aspect of norms, three things are guaranteed by PPPA, namely animal health, implementation according to Sharia, and reports given to mudhohi. In terms of trust, PPPA absorbs the focus of the Qur'an based qurbani program, ordering sacrificial animals is easy, and reports are received in a timely manner. In terms of the network aspect, in building social networks in the PPPA Daarul Qur'an  qurban program, it divides into two networks, namely internal (bonding social capital) and external (bridging social capital and linking social capital). The social capital norms built by PPPA are able to provide trust. In addition, PPPA Daarul Qur'an  internal and external strategy in building a network of cooperation has succeeded in building the information flow of PPPA Daarul Qur'an  sacrifices and making it easy for mudhohi to sacrifice.

Abstract

This article examines the meanings and functions of Javanese traditional food through a linguistic anthropological lens. Food is approached not merely as a biological necessity, but as a cultural artifact embedded with social significance. Drawing on a corpus of traditional food names compiled by Endang Nurhayati (2013), this study analyzes how naming practices reflect the cultural logic and symbolic values of Javanese society. The findings demonstrate that the meanings and functions of traditional foods are flexible and contingent upon their socio-cultural contexts, whether in ritual ceremonies or everyday consumption. Naming conventions are shaped by sensory attributes (such as color, taste, texture, and form), sound symbolism (onomatopoeia), and acronyms. These linguistic strategies reveal how language mediates cultural understanding and expresses identity, history, and communal values. The study contributes to broader discussions on the role of food in semiotic systems and the intersection between language, culture, and social practice in Javanese tradition.
