Abstract

This paper highlights the strategies and efforts of Paciran women in the productive sphere. Even though women have played an important role in the economic life of the household, in fact, they still bear double burdens, they are still burdened and given household responsibilities. This is of course caused by the domination of patriarchal culture which is rooted in society. Women are considered as others who have boundaries, norms, and subordination of women to men in their environment. As a result, the strategy for selecting women's jobs that places the house as the main place is a real effort to reduce the domination of patriarchal culture. This research was conducted on women who work in Nguplik in a village in Paciran District, Lamongan Regency, East Java. Nguplik is the work of separating the shells or skins of cooked crabs from the meat to be sold and processed into food and cosmetics. Nguplik is carried out by individuals and or groups of women. This study uses a qualitative method with a gender anthropological approach, with the data collection process using in-depth interviews and observations. The finding of this study is the acceptance of women as workers.

Abstract

This paper discusses the body, sexuality, and power relations of women through dangdut koplo music. Dangdut music is actually a Malay crystallization of orchestra that occurs because the people have such a close relationship with the people that represents their aspirations and desires. Therefore, dangdut is in great demand and loved by people in Indonesia. Dangdut identities with a singer; women and gesture (goyangan), make dangdut an attractive arena in the battle about the body, sexuality, and power relations over the body that are owned by singers. A singer can still show the independence of her body instead of being a commodity object. She can make her body the subject. There she is, she alone has the power to control her own body. This can be seen from the saweran incident, which was the relationship between the singer and the audience on the stage who had high bargaining and negotiating methods towards his body.

Abstract

This study aims to look at the consumerism culture that occurs during Muslimah fashion which has now become a trend. The world of fashion, especially Muslim fashion, is growing. Clothing industry agents such as designers and celebrities or influencers are also competing to create Muslimah clothing that can attract consumers' interest, so now we can see Muslimah fashion brands scattered around. Kazami is one of the brands owned by an influencer named Kayla Nadira who has succeeded in becoming a Muslimah fashion brand with quite high enthusiasts. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. With data collection techniques, namely interviews, observation, and also documentation. As well as the theory used in this study is the theory of consumerism by Jean Baudrillard. The results of the study show that there is a pattern of consumptive behavior in the Muslimah fashion phenomenon which has now become a trend. This can be seen from consumers who make purchases not because of the main function of the Muslim clothing itself, but because they are interested in the visual value or display value provided by the products offered through the online market.

Abstract

This article examines the meanings and functions of Javanese traditional food through a linguistic anthropological lens. Food is approached not merely as a biological necessity, but as a cultural artifact embedded with social significance. Drawing on a corpus of traditional food names compiled by Endang Nurhayati (2013), this study analyzes how naming practices reflect the cultural logic and symbolic values of Javanese society. The findings demonstrate that the meanings and functions of traditional foods are flexible and contingent upon their socio-cultural contexts, whether in ritual ceremonies or everyday consumption. Naming conventions are shaped by sensory attributes (such as color, taste, texture, and form), sound symbolism (onomatopoeia), and acronyms. These linguistic strategies reveal how language mediates cultural understanding and expresses identity, history, and communal values. The study contributes to broader discussions on the role of food in semiotic systems and the intersection between language, culture, and social practice in Javanese tradition.

Abstract

This paper tries to criticize the ideas about representation and generalization that exist in ethnographic works. The criticism leveled is that in ethnographic descriptions written by researchers is biased and unreliable, because their academic disciplines emerged from a period of European history marked by colonialism and the knowledge it produced was seen as the engine for œWestern domination machines. Recent debates have focused on the question of whether ethnographers as particular œsubjects are capable of producing reliable and objective images of culture and the others. Here the texts in ethnographic works act as introductions or openings to discourses and debates about representational ideas and generalizations in ethnographic works. Next, the author analyzes and interprets using the thoughts of James Clifford and Lila Abu-Lughod on the theory of decolonization in anthropology. Interpretation is done by narrating criticism into discourse or discourse about ideas about representation and generalizations in ethnographic works.

Abstract

This article examines the use of écriture féminine—a feminist writing practice that foregrounds women’s bodily experience and subjective voice—in Amalia Yunus’ novel Tutur Dedes: Doa dan Kutukan as a form of resistance against androcentric literary discourse. The novel challenges conventional stereotypes by portraying Dedes not as a passive object of male desire but as an active historical and political agent engaged in shaping social change. Through strategies such as first-person narration, symbolic representations of birth and motherhood, and the reclamation of female corporeality, the narrative confronts patriarchal constraints that have long defined women’s roles in literature. In this context, écriture féminine functions as a subversive practice that destabilizes what Cixous calls “phallogocentric structures”—systems of thought privileging male-centered logic—while simultaneously enabling women to reclaim their voices and identities. Likewise, the study employs Mignolo’s concept of “epistemic disobedience,” understood here as the deliberate act of resisting dominant frameworks of male-centered knowledge, to show how Yunus’ text reconfigures cultural memory. By reimagining Dedes as a figure of intellectual and political agency, the novel disrupts the androcentric canon that often marginalizes women as secondary characters. This study argues that Tutur Dedes: Doa dan Kutukan not only redefines female representation through narrative form and thematic symbolism but also contributes to a broader feminist discourse by demonstrating literature’s capacity to act as a site of resistance and transformative critique across cultural and disciplinary boundaries.
