Abstract

Abstract

Background: University students, especially those in demanding programs like occupational therapy, often face significant academic pressure, social obligations, and complicated personal responsibilities. This situation presents major obstacles to managing time effectively and achieving a healthy work-life balance. In this context, life balance refers not merely to an equal distribution of time between academic work and personal life, but rather to an individual's subjective perception of fulfilling their needs across various life domains, including academics, social life, recreation, and personal well-being (Greenhaus et al., 2003; Marks & MacDermid, 1996).This study examines the time management patterns of occupational therapy students and how these patterns influence their perception of life balance. Objectives: This study is supposed to investigate time management and life balance among occupational therapy students. Methods: This qualitative study involved 6-8 participants who met the following criteria: (1) aged 18-24 years, (2) currently enrolled as active students (not on academic leave) at Poltekkes Surakarta, and (3) willing to participate as research respondents. Results: The majority of interviewed students reported difficulties in managing their time to achieve life balance, with challenges arising from both internal and external factors. Conclusion: Students need to develop effective time management skills and prioritize important activities to achieve a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Keyword: Life balance, time use, students

Abstract

Children with special needs according to the Ministry of State Minister for Empowerment (Asiva Noor Rachmayani, 2015) are children with limitations or extraordinary, in terms of physical, mental-intellectual, social, or emotional, which have a major influence on the growth and development process compared to other children of the same age. This study aims to determine the effect of family empowerment programs on the development of sensory, motoric, visual perception and independence on activities of daily living (ADL) of children with special needs. This study used a pre-experimental research design with a one group pre and post test design to see changes in developmental maturity, and independence on activities of daily living before and after receiving intervention. Data analysis in this study was the paired Samples t-test. The results of this study showed the effect of providing family empowerment programs on sensory development (p = 0.000), motoric (p = 0.000), visual perception (p = 0.000), and independence of AKS (p = 0.000). So it can be concluded that the family empowerment program (providing training and monitored home programs) has proven effective in increasing the development of sensory, motor, visual perception and independence on ADL in children with special needs

Abstract

Background: Oral hygiene problems in children with Down Syndrome (DS) are challenging due to delayed motor and cognitive development that affects their independence in brushing their teeth. The purpose of this community service project was to determine the benefits of tooth brushing education using visual media on the tooth brushing skills of 8 children with DS in the partner region. Methods: The method used was direct education and training with visual media delivered to children and caregivers during several sessions. Evaluation was conducted through observation and measurement of toothbrushing skills before and after the intervention. Results: The results showed a significant improvement in toothbrushing skills, with 80% of participants experiencing an improvement in their ability to perform this activity independently. The addition of visual media proved effective in improving the fine motor skills required for tooth brushing. Conclusion: The provision of visual media was effective in improving tooth brushing skills in children with DS. This activity can be continued to provide tangible benefits in improving the quality of life of children with DS while supporting their families and caregivers.

Abstract

Background: Intellectual Disability (ID) is a disability characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior in many social skills and practical daily skills, including activities of daily living (ADL). To train ID children to independently carry out these activities, it is necessary to empower families (increase knowledge, attitudes, and skills of parents in handling ID children at home) so that the handling of ID children can be optimal. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of family empowerment through training and monitored home programs on increasing ADL independence for ID children. Methods: This research was conducted using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest and posttest. The data analysis in this study is the Paired Samples T-test. The instrument in this study is WeeFIM (The Functional Independence Measure for Children). Respondent criteria: mild-severe degree of intellectual disability based on the Mental Retardation Screening examination, ID child's parents are willing and committed to following research procedures, ID child's parents are able to read and can understand the contents of the module (minimum junior high school graduates). Results: Mean value after intervention = 103.21 (> mean before intervention = 96.54) and statistically significant (p = 0.000). It showed that family empowerment (training and monitored home programs) significantly increased the independence of children with intellectual disabilities. Conclusion: The family empowerment program (training and monitored home programs) is a cheap, easy, and effective program for ID children, and it can be applied to all families of ID children.
