Abstract

The focus of teaching English as a foreign language has primarily revolved around the importance of speaking skills. However, it has been observed that many students face challenges in improving their ability to speak. These challenges can be categorized into five main issues: linguistic aspects, psychological aspects, teaching strategies employed by teachers, inadequate media resources, and students' speaking performance. In light of these issues, the researcher proposed stick puppets as an alternative media that aligns well with the targeted aspects and strategies for improvement. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) to enhance the speaking skills of seventh-grade students in SMPN 1 Bantaran during the academic year 2021/2022. Collaborative classroom action research was conducted, consisting of a single cycle spanning three meetings and one post-test. Data collection techniques included a speaking test to assess students' speaking scores, as well as teacher's field notes, interviews, students' questionnaires, and classroom observation sheets as secondary data. After implementing stick puppets as a media tool, the research findings revealed a significant improvement in the speaking skills of seventh-grade students. Out of 22 students, 95.65% achieved the minimum passing score, and the mean score increased from 16.08 in the preliminary speaking test to 90.86. The data indicated that the utilization of stick puppets contributed to enhancing students' vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and content in speaking. Additionally, stick puppets fostered increased participation and engagement among students in the classroom. Students displayed interest, motivation, and confidence, particularly when describing physical appearances using stick puppets.

Abstract This case study focuses on the process of acquiring the language of a four year old Indonesian child. This study also analyzes several other factors and mechanisms that influence the acquisition of a first language. For nearly five months, data gained in this study by observing and recording subjects in producing sounds, words, and sentences during in the middle to the end of the 2019 year. We also see how the child interacts with various kinds of input sentences to see how he processes the language. In the end, we also observed him when he was interacting with other people to determine the level of constructing various kinds of language communication competencies. The analysis of the data was anchored on the confirmation or rejection of language acquisition theories, principles, and previous researches.  Based on the findings in this study, the child who was the subject of this study obtained Indonesian as the first natural way. Evidence obtained from observations states that the child uses the Language Acquisition Device (LAD) well, which is the main thing that helps him acquire the first language. Also, the environment plays a vital role in activating innate capacity in language acquisition. Observations and interviews were carried out with her parents to ensure that she acquired the language by imitating and learning through corrections and reinforcement assistance, analogies, and grammar input from the parents. The child also proved that their environment greatly influenced difficulties in language and communication. Natural processes and environmental influences also play an essential role in acquiring the first language in children. Parents and teachers should consider this process by creating good language learning and development at all levels of learning.   Abstrak Studi kasus ini terfokus pada proses pemerolehan Bahasa seorang anak Indonesia berusia empat tahun. Abstract

The technique of photovoice can be defined as a process whereby people can identify, represent, and enhance their social rules and social practices using photographs accompanied by verbal commentary. The current study uses photovoice to identify and analyze the academic stress experienced by pre-service teachers in an academic reading classroom. This phenomenological case study aims to unravel the stress experienced by undergraduate students while they were engaged in mandatory online learning under pandemic conditions through the use of photovoice. Out of thirty-one students who participated in an online academic reading course, two female students were selected to discuss the photographs they had chosen, reflecting on their lived experiences of mandatory online learning at a private university in West Java, Indonesia. The collection of all the participants data took place from March to June 2020. The data were derived from their photovoice records supplemented by focus group discussion and a follow-up semi-structured interview. The visual illustrations and verbal commentary they produced constitute evidence of pre-service teachers academic stress and provide insights into this phenomenon. The two participants revealed that the possible reasons for academic stress stemmed from the task burden, lack of connection, feelings of loneliness, and exhaustion related to online learning. These results suggest that teacher education programs need to minimize the burden of tasks, give students opportunities to speak about their experiences with online learning and design interactive materials for online learning.
