Abstract

This descriptive-qualitative case study was conducted to describe the implementation of English team teaching at SMA Negeri (Senior High School) 2 Malang in terms of the objectives, the shared responsibilities among teachers, perceptions of the teachers and students, and factors influencing the implementation. Four English teachers and 106 students of Year 10 and Year 11, selected using a purposive random sampling technique, were involved. The data were collected through interviews and questionnaire. The findings show that the reasons for implementing team teaching were the adequate number of English teachers, empowerment in the subject they taught, and forming bonds among teachers and students. Different types of shared re-sponsibilities were found among the teachers. Additionally, both the teachers and the students had positive perceptions concerning the effectiveness of team teaching. In-stead of having difficulties, all the teachers saw the existence of supporting factors in their implementing team teaching.

Abstract

There has been extensive literature on the teaching of vocabulary of English as a foreign language (EFL vocabulary) in the Indonesian context. However, a comprehensive analysis on the teaching of EFL vocabulary in this country has been a rare endeavour. This article aims to underpin various issues of the teaching of EFL vocabulary and relate them to a wider context of second/foreign language vocabulary teaching and review results of research as well as current practices of EFL vocabulary teaching and learning in the Indonesian context. It is expected that this article could provide an outline of the teaching of EFL vocabulary and some recommendations for future research and practices

Abstract

This article reports part of a broader action-research study on training EFL students in the use of strategies for effective peer response. Surveys using questionnaires were conducted among 20 university students involved in the action research to measure the changes in attitudes toward peer response before and after the classroom-based action research. The findings suggest that significant changes were obtained in all the questionnaire items regarding attitudes toward peer response. The students indicated that classmates oral and written comments helped them enrich the content of their writing, improve the organization of their writing, and improve the language (including grammar and vocabulary) of their writing.

Abstract

Abstract: In our TEFL situation, it is simply in the classroom that we expect our students to get the language exposures as much as possible since the language is not used outside the classroom. Therefore, every opportunity in the teaching learning process should be geared towards the students using the target language. This paper highlights how oral communication skills can be encouraged even in a writing class. With a paradigmatic change in the teaching of writing, teachers do not value only `the product but also `the process. When translated into the classroom, one of the features of this new paradigm, the writing process approach, is `the conference, which occurs between teacher and students as well as between students. As Mol (1992) states, writing conference provides students with immediate, meaningful responses to their writing, developing students ability to reflect upon their own writing and the writing of others in a critical and constructive way. Looking back at our own experience in teaching writing, the conference does not only scaffold the students in the process of meaning-making but also creates an atmosphere where they are actively engaged in a `more focused talk. This is of paramount importance since our students tend to speak in their native language even in the classroom.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates students’ perceptions about paraphrasing and their cognitive and meta-cognitive processes in paraphrasing. Four Indonesian advanced EFL students enrolled in Applied Linguistics course of a graduate program in English Language Teaching of a state university in Malang were voluntarily willing to participate in thestudy. These four subjects did a paraphrasing task requiring them to do concurrent verbal reports whileparaphrasing three sentences and one paragraph.Following this, the subjects responded to a questionnaire and then participated in a retrospective interview. The data from the questionnaires were described qualitatively, whereas the verbal reports were transcribed andanalyzed for identification of cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies based on the framework of learning strategies by Chamot and Kupper (1989). The subjects’ perceptions about paraphrasing appeared to be in line with the widely accepted definition and criteria of proper paraphrases. Additionally, the results of verbal reports show that the subjects used 21 cognitive and seven meta-cognitive strategies, reflecting the fact that most of the cognitive strategies used in the sentence level were applied in the paragraph level with some additions of strategies specific to paragraph development and synthesis such as finding the main idea and summarizing.

Abstract

Logical fallacies are common errors in reasoning that will undermine the logic of an argument. In argumentative writing, the presence of logical fallacies such fallacies shows either illegitimate arguments or irrelevant points, and are often identified because they lack evidence that supports their claim. The purpose of the study is to identify and discuss logical fallacies in the argumentative writing of Indonesian EFL learners. 40 argumentative essays were collected from the students of the English Department of the State University of Malang who have passed all the writing courses, including the course on argumentative writing. The results of the study shows that students still produced a number of logical fallacies in their work, some of which were so basic they can actually be avoided through simple, explicit instruction. Some pedagogical implications of the findings are also discussed.

Abstract:  Digital resources have been proven able to assist English language learners in improving their interaction skills, widening their vocabulary range, and enhancing their reading comprehension. Despite their benefits, digital tools can also create distractions for students. This article reports on the result of a survey to 150 vocational students on Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) materials. The students agreed that MALL materials were more authentic (67%) and more accessible (59%) than traditional learning materials. The use of MALL materials could trigger classroom interactions (64%) and facilitated learning (56%). The implementation of MALL materials allowed students to get immediate feedback from the teachers (73%).Abstrak: Sumber daya digital telah terbukti dapat membantu pelajar bahasa Inggris dalam meningkatkan keterampilan interaksi, memperluas jangkauan kosa kata, dan meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan mereka. Abstract

Learning outcome in this increasingly competitive era of globalization demands the ability to think critically, creatively, communicate and collaborate and cooperation including a good social skill. The meaning of learning outcome is the changes that occur in the students, whether involving cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects as a result of learning activities. Cooperative Learning Model of Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) type emphasizes the activity and interaction among learners that enable cooperation and socialization among students and help each other in mastering the material to achieve a better learning outcome.
