Abstract

A multitude of studies on self-efficacy beliefs have been undertaken to date, especially in language learning. However, little evidence is given on looking into the relationship between self-efficacy and English grammar. To this end, the present study goes about identifying to what extent the correlation between learners’ self-efficacy and their achievements in the grammar test is. Drawing on the correlational design, an English grammar test was administered to the learners to know the learners’ acquaintance with the English grammar. Meanwhile, a self-efficacy questionnaire was performed by the researcher to the learners to figure out to what extent their efficaciousness is. A Pearson-product moment correlation was performed to analyze the relationship between such variables. The result demonstrates that there is a high positive significant correlation between learners’ self-efficacy and their attainments in the grammar test, displayed by r Correlation = +1. This finding brings a recent insight in the field of language learning.

Abstract

Despite several studies on speaking skills in the EFL context, little attention has been attracted to investigating the effectiveness of the talking stick method on speaking skills. This study examines the effectiveness of the talking stick method in improving students' speaking skills at MA Uswatun Hasanah. The study used quantitative methods and interviews to gain a better understanding of the effectiveness of this method in classroom learning. The study used a simple random sampling technique and a one-group pre-test and post-test design. This study uses subjective tests in the form of read-aloud tests as an instrument to take pretest and posttest data. Likewise, the data collection methods used are observation, interviews to strengthen the data obtained from subjective tests. The mean post-test score (49.83) was higher than the pre-test score (42.87), indicating that the talking stick technique had a positive impact on the speaking ability of students at MA Uswatun Hasanah in the 2023–2024 academic year. Abstract

The language learning largely took place in the classroom, especially prior to Covid-19 pandemic and that this occurrence resulted in simplicity for the learners to learn and interact with each other because they could directly make in contact with their classmates and their teachers. However, since the pandemic developed in March 2020, all the learning process was subsequently altered into online learning. To date, studies on language learning has been undertaken by the researchers both at intra and international level. Despite the existence of these former studies, little work reports the comprehensive picture of language learning experiences prior to and during Covid-19 pandemic. To fill this lacuna, the current article reports on a narrative inquiry of EFL learners’ experiences of learning English prior to and during Covid-19 pandemic. Drawing upon data from a semi-structured interview with two Indonesian EFL learners of the sixth semester majoring in English education program, the finding indicates that EFL learners have sustained multifaceted learning experiences prior to and during the pandemic. They have gone through face-to-face learning prior to the pandemic, asynchronous learning during the pandemic and hybrid learning experience during the Covid-19 pandemic. This article concludes with suggestions for promoting hybrid learning model in the EFL setting, particularly in a higher education during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

One of the difficulties that are often experienced by students in learning English is reading. Reading is an activity that occurs every day at school, at home, or in public places. Students in Indonesia have difficulty understanding English reading, mainly due to lack of practice, lack of vocabulary they have, and lack of knowledge about strategies for understanding English reading text. This education service is done to address the problems in reading by using training methods. The approach used in this service is inquiry-based learning. The results of this education service can be concluded that students can understand English reading well after they are trained to cope with problems in reading comprehension through an inquiry-based learning approach by collaborating and consulting with the educator. Therefore, the inquiry-based learning approach is very effective to be applied in both formal and non-formal school environments.

Abstract

These days, the use of AI-powered writing tools has been increasingly exploited by some practitioners. These AI tools have brought benefits to learners, especially EFL learners. This facilitates, for example, them with translating, editing and revising stages. However, a technology that understands writers ideas and suggests opinions for rewriting them using different tones and lengths is scarcely used. Thus, the current study attempts to fill this gap. Using a poststructuralist lens, this study attempts to investigate the use of Word-tune as an AI-writing tool by EFL learners. Two EFL learners were recruited to investigate their perception of using Word-tune for writing and invited to join the semi-structured interviews to uncover the benefits of the tool. The results indicate that Word-tune has facilitated them a lot, especially when they need to construct different sentences but still in the original meaning. It also facilitates them with avoiding plagiarism and translation features, making them more easily to understand and improve their writing performance. The suggestions for future studies were offered at the end of this paper.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of the Herringbone technique in improving reading comprehension skills among class XI students. The research followed a quasi-experimental design, with an experimental group receiving instruction using the Herringbone technique and a control group receiving traditional instruction. Pre-test and post-test assessments were conducted to measure the participants' reading comprehension abilities. The results indicated a significant improvement in the reading comprehension scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. These findings suggest that the Herringbone technique is more effective than traditional methods in enhancing reading comprehension skills. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of incorporating interactive and collaborative instructional approaches in English language teaching to foster critical thinking and deeper understanding of texts. Future research should explore the long-term effects and applicability of the Herringbone technique in diverse educational contexts. Overall, the Herringbone technique shows promise as an effective approach to enhance reading comprehension instruction and support language development among students.

Abstract

ABSTRACT As part of English proficiency, reading plays a pivotal role in every aspect of life. Given the fact that reading English is still a big deal for most learners, they often avoid practicing such skill. As a consequence, EFL learners, for the most part, keep suffering from the complexities in reading. Besides, the teaching in Indonesia is mostly teacher centered approach in that it makes them passive. This present paper expounds on PQRST strategy in reading. This paper attempts to eliminate the reading disabilities. PQRST which stands for Preview, Question, Read, Summarize, and Test is strongly recommended to be employed by the students in copying with difficulties in reading. This strategy has the power of succeeding in reading the text since complete steps are sufficiently provided. Hence, comprehension in reading the text will be improved with this strategy.
