The life of Madurese women is interesting to study as they live in a strongly patriarchal society as well as cultural traditions. In terms of marriage, Madurese women are confronted with unfavorable traditional practices such as early marriage and arranged marriage. Low educational level and financial dependence are two major factors that prevent them from escaping these practices and leave them in unhappy marriages. Many of them experience domination and subordination in all aspects of their life. However, such conditions are commonly experienced by former Madurese women whose life was restricted to beliefs and traditions that undermined women. Nowadays, modern era has significantly shaped the way people perceive things and behave. Subsequently, modern Madurese women are rejecting the existing marriage traditions by marrying the men of their choosing. They also have better educational backgrounds that contribute to the different perspectives of life and are financially independent. Employing a phenomenological framework, the purpose of this study is to investigate the marriage life of Modern Madurese women by looking at the husband-wife relationship based on the sexual contracts theory. Unstructured interviews were used to generate the data for the analysis. The results of the study demonstrate that there is a husband-wife relationship shifting in the marriage life of modern Madurese women. The husband-wife relationship is more to the partnership rather than dominant-subordinated.

Globalization has contributed to the intensification of worldwide social relations that continuously increases the interconnectedness of people from diverse cultures. Its implication creates possibilities in spreading new or certain ideas through accessible telecommunication and the internet. It is undeniable that Madura is also affected by globalization particularly its cultural practices. Madurese people have frequently been confronted with a problematic phenomenon in their marriage tradition because arranged marriage and early marriage are still commonly practiced and have been passed down over generations for a long time. Both of the practices give unfair treatment to women since they violate their autonomy and independence. As globalization opens access to a new perspective of life, as people can experience another culture by traveling or connected through the internet, it provides a huge influence on the way people think, reacts, and responds to their own culture or tradition. In connection with this phenomenon, this study is going to elucidate how young Madurese women who have been exposed to the use of media and the internet conceptualize their marriage ideas, whether they still follow the old tradition or they have constructed a new concept of marriage. By applying a qualitative method, this study will conduct an interview and distribute a questionnaire to young Madurese women studying at the University of Trunojoyo Madura. The results indicate that globalization to some extent constructs the new perception of marriage for young Madurese women and builds a variety of interpretations based on what and how they connect themselves with the world outside their community.

Marriage is a social institution that adopts a patriarchal ideology to regulate the relationship between husband and wife. As a result, conflicts based on gender inequality can arise as patriarchal ideologies in marriage reinforce the dominance of men over women. A married woman’s life is often portrayed in feminist literature, such as in the short story of Qaisra Shahraz, Zemindar’s wife. This study analyzes the married life of Noor by applying the theory of Simone De Beauvoir in her book, The Second Sex. Besides, the study uses a qualitative approach with a close reading method. The results show that the short story Zemindar's Wife depicts the unequal gender relationship between husbands and wives in marriage. This gender imbalance leads to inequality, with women being dominated and subordinated by their husbands.
