Abstract

In the current context, higher education faces the challenge of preparing future professionals to respond to society’s increasingly complex problems. However, the search for solutions means adopting new ways of working that promote multidimensionality through collaboration and an interdisciplinary outlook. Despite the advances made in interdisciplinary research, innovation development, and interdisciplinary teamwork, however, the implementation of this approach in higher education is still very slow, and further efforts are required. This article considers the opportunities for an interdisciplinary approach to student learning in university settings. In Nigeria, it is common knowledge that the educational system in it is not what it ought to be. This is evidenced by the fact that, above all, a good number of graduates from this system are unemployable, leading to so many ills in society. It is not unconnected with this fact that national policy on education was formulated to correct the anomaly. A juxtaposition of the policy with the state of higher education in Nigeria shows that the policy is far from actualizing its ends. The paper, therefore, suggested that core subjects should be integrated into the curriculum across levels that involve interdisciplinary learning in Nigerian universities.

The respondents were measured with validated instrument of .95 and the data obtained was analyzed using t-test statistical analysis. Two research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that there was significant difference in the depression of secondary school teachers exposed to internet-based technique and those in the control group (t = 76.91; p < 0.05) and there was significant difference in the depression of secondary school teachers with high social support and those with low social support (t = 37.82; p < 0.05). In view of these findings, the study recommended that educational stakeholders should intensify their effort to organize conferences on the implications of internet-based technique and social support as effective interventions towards managing the depression and that curriculum planner should try as much as possible to include in the scheme of teacher training, skills on internet-based technique.

The result showed that mathematics learning gains among secondary school students is significantly correlated with teachers’ improvisation of instructional materials (r = .863; p<.05) and teachers’ utilisation of instructional materials (r= .783; p<.05), the independent variables when pulled together have significant effect on mathematics learning gains (R (adjusted) =.837 & R2 (adjusted) =.745) with 74.5% variance accounted for mathematics learning gains and each of the independent variables made a significant contribution to the prediction of mathematics learning gains. In view of these findings, the study recommended that relevant professional bodies like mathematics Association of Nigeria (MAN) and Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON) should organize seminar or workshops during annual conferences to train teachers about the techniques that will be used to bring a total change in teaching mathematics contents.
