Abstract

Hijrah is considered as a change in attitude and religious experience, from looseness to strictness. The phenomenon of hijrah shows the view that piety should be appeared in outward form. This research illustrates that hijrah is not always a role model of piety, but it can also be a spread of frozen ideology, depicting the commodification of religion, and is considered as discussing only ḥalāl and ḥarām issues. Applying a qualitative approach, this study takes the data in litterer source both the religious text and media. The sources of data in media come from media statements related to the hijrah phenomenon. The research results show: first, hijrah is interesting for some Muslims because Islamic teachings are more practical, less philosophical and complicated. Second, the meaning of hijrah as its original meaning is not limited to aspects of existence; rather, the religious spirit is interpreted as a personal spiritual journey that will continue throughout human life. The shifting phenomenon on hijrah much influenced by media and social media wave that blow up the value of practicality, consumerism, and commodification of religion.

Abstract

The Indonesian political elites tend to use Muslims for their personal interests, instead of making Islam as their moral guide in the political arena, despite Nurcholish Madjid’s (Cak Nur) secularization is needed. For this reason, this research discusses the political ideals of Cak Nur, especially the idea of secularization in the midst of the current political Islam in Indonesia. Using a descriptive method, literature study, and a qualitative approach, the results of the study showed that Islam essentially is not merely a formal structure or composition and collection of laws of the state and government. Islam is the embodiment of tawḥīd. It is a spiritual force that can give birth to a soul that is ḥanīf, inclusive, democratic, and respects society’s pluralism. Therefore, an understanding of more advanced Islamic teachings, such as Cak Nur’s secularization concept which according to Cak Nur's does not lead to secularism; as well as the need for freedom of thought, an idea of progress, and openness to ideas are a necessity in Indonesia. As such Moslem should use a secular lens to view worldly matters that need rational and objective thinking, rather than using faith, Islamic law, ʻaqīda (creed), and ʻibāda (worship) which are spiritual matters.

The study used descriptive and literature review methods, as well as qualitative approach, the results of the study showed that eviction policies were justified in the utilitarian view, Eviction of a handful of residents living on the riverbanks was done to normalize the riverbank and green areas to save millions of DKI Jakarta residents from floods. Abstract

Identity politics promoted by the 212 Movement has led to increased intolerance in society. This study captured this problem through the perspective of Emmanuel Levinas’ Ethics. According to Levinas, the act of intolerance occurs because we see the Other, not with ideas, ideologies, teachings, doctrines, interests, and religion that should be upheld above all things. Our attachment to the ideas we has about others often makes us fail to treat them as humans because we are prevented from encountering them directly. For this reason, this study aims to find out the negative consequences caused by the 212 Movement through the philosophical perspective of Emmanuel Levinas' ethics. With descriptive methods, literature study, and a qualitative approach, the results of the study showed that identity politics carried out by the 212 Movement could not be justified in ethical relations. The 212 Movement saw other human beings as objects that can be used to achieve their personal or group goals. The movement has controlled and exploited their fellow believers, and not reluctant to carry out hateful propaganda to people outside their group. Levinas ethical relations open a new type of relations that are different from idea-based relations. Encountering others makes us realize that they are not merely skin, flesh, and blood that can be destroyed just like that.

Abstract

The ideals of justice are failing, with the widespread violence and discriminatory acts against various communities in Indonesia, despite what Michael Sandel's view that the community's view of good and fair was formed based on the community's beliefs about what is considered as good and fair. Community has an important role in communal living, since each community has a range of values and concepts of good. As such, the concept of a good society cannot simply be derived from the general principle but need to be obtained through the exploration of the community’s values and beliefs. For this reason, this study aimed to review the communitarianism-style of justice in the philosophical perspective of Michael Sandel. Using descriptive and documents analysis methods, as well as qualitative approaches, the results of the study showed that justice can be created from the promotion of value. Through a consensus, it is hoped that the government can explore the community’s value to be a mutual guideline in community living. This value can be accepted as a common good. Justice in society can only be sensibly created if it starts with the agreed and shared insights. Therefore, justice, according to Sandel, can only be created by using shared community values.
