English teachers in Indonesia typically teach in large classroom size, with high possibility to teach more than two classes. When it comes to assessing students’ work, most of them tended to rely on teacher assessment, for it is considered as part of their duties as professional teachers. However, when dealing with students’ work, students may also need superficial and substantial correction and feedback rather than receiving marks only. Nevertheless, to provide those corrections and feedback, English teachers need a considerable amount of time to complete the assessment process; estimated calculation has been provided in this paper. Therefore, this conceptual paper aims to provide an alternative way to assess students’ work through peer assessment. Some benefits and challenges have been discussed to give insights for English teachers in Indonesia. This paper agrees that peer assessment can help teachers regarding time efficiency and help students regarding increased learning engagement. Moreover, English teachers need to pay tackle to some challenges such as shifting from a traditional perspective towards teacher authority and addressing issues of validity and reliability from students’ marking results. This paper suggests that though teachers can minimize their workload, their presence is pivotal in assisting students during the assessment process.

Abstract

Instagram serves as an example of the most famous social media platforms. Instagram, particularly for the executives, can favorably relate connections among politicians, voters, and other supportive or contending parties. The current research aimed to analyze the form of social criticism delivered by netizens on the comments towards three Indonesian politicians' Instagram posts, namely Anies Baswedan, Ridwan Kamil, and Ganjar Pranowo, who have millions of followers putting concerns towards what they did on Instagram. Besides, the research also aimed to identify some pedagogical implications of Instagram on language learning. A qualitative approach was employed to uncover the three dimensions of the discourse: positivism-empiricists, constructivism, and critical into one analysis unit or social cognition. The research found that netizens' comments were in line with the status postings of each of the governor published on Instagram, focus on the three governors' performance during their tenure, and affected by the background of the supporting parties. This research supports the idea that Instagram is a viable means of language learning because it can provide a meaningful context to learn a language.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the types of cohesive devices utilised in the recount text writing of Tenth-grade students at MAN Huta Godang during the academic year 2022/2023 and to identify the most prevalent form of cohesive device. The data was taken from 5 students writing. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method that includes cohesive devices in students' writing. It was found that the types of grammatical cohesion were reference, conjunction, and ellipsis. The most frequently used type of grammatical cohesion is the reference. Students who recount text writing using grammatical cohesion can be in the "fair" category with a percentage of 30.2%. The study suggests students should be aware that merely including a large number of cohesive elements in an essay does not guarantee that the essay will demonstrate or even produce cohesiveness; rather, the cohesive elements must be used in a logical and consistent manner throughout the text. Abstract

The study analyzed the multimodality of the EFL textbook for elementary school students. A qualitative descriptive study has been employed to carry out this study. The source of the data is the textbook, namely Get Smart Plus. The data was visual and verbal elements within the textbook, including any text and images that explain each other. The study used the multimodal framework proposed by Krees Van Leuween’s visual grammar and Halliday’s transitivity system to analyze the data. The finding shows that the visual elements of the textbook contain representation, composition, and relational patterns. In addition, the dominant process in the textbook is the verbal mode of communication (42%). However, the material process based on the analysis of Halliday’s theory was not represented in the book. The visual and verbal elements relate to each other and can potentially support students’ learning and understanding of the content. Therefore, the textbook can be a multimodal resource for students’ English learning. This study hopes to benefit textbook developers and designers by improving the use of visual and verbal elements of the textbook to support students’ cognitive development. Further research can be conducted on the impact of textbook multimodality on students’ learning achievement to contribute more to the study of discourse. Abstract

Proposing the idea of perception toward native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) and non-native English-speaking teachers (non-NESTs), this research was motivated by the historical changes from the ‘fallacies’ in finding the most suitable English teachers between the two categories to discussing their potential if those teachers collaborated in team teaching. This study aimed to reveal a) the top three language skills pre-service English teachers perceived to improve if taught by either NESTs or Indonesian English teachers and b) the priority list of qualifications to meet by them. The quantitative findings from a close-ended questionnaire involving 186 pre-service English teachers in the Department of English Education at an Indonesian university indicated that the respondents tend to view NESTs as good models to teach oral-aural skills such as listening, pronunciation, and speaking. On the other hand, Indonesian English teachers could better-supporting students in teaching written skills such as grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills, which are more related to accuracy and language features. For the second objective, our results indicated that our respondents agreed that the English teaching profession should have fair treatment. Both NESTs and Indonesian English teachers are required to have relevant academic qualifications, and teaching experiences were viewed.
