Abstract

Abstrak: Pendidik (dosen dan guru) harus kreatif dalam memilih dan menentukan metode atau pendekatan yang sesuai untuk diterapkan dalam pembelajaran. Pemilihan metode, pendekatan, model, atau strategi harus dilakukan sebelum hadir dalam ruang kelas. Pemilihan metode harus sejalan dengan tujuan pembelajaran. Ana­lisis teoretik ini mencoba mengungkap perspektif baru penggunaan metode lang­sung dalam pelaksanaan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Menginterpretasi dan me­ma­nipulasi metode secara tepat bukan hanya meningkatkan kualitas pembe­la­jar­an melainkan juga prestasi belajar peserta didik. Menggunakan metode langsung da­­lam pembelajaran bahsa Inggris khususnya dalam mengajarkan keterampilan ba­­hasa seperti, aspek tata bahasa dan berbicara secara lisan dan bahkan dalam ba­­hasa tulis. Penerapan metode langsung dalam proses pembelajaran seharusnya me­­merhatikan karakteristik peserta didik dan bahan ajar yang hendak diberikan. Peng­gunaan metode langsung seharusnya digunakan secara terus-menerus da­lam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing atau target.Abstract: Lecturers and teachers should be creative in choosing and determining an ap­pro­priate method or approach to be applied in their teaching and learning. The acti­vi­ty of choosing and determining any technique, method, approach, model, and strategy is such a main activity before coming to the class. The fallacy of choosing method in teaching can be a paradoct to the instructional objectives. This the­oretical anlaysis try to reunlock any new perspective of using direct method in con­ducting English teaching and learning process. The way of interpretation and ma­nipulation of method appropriately not only can enhance the quality of tea­ching and learning process but also leaning outcome or students’ achievement. Using direct method in teaching English, especially for teaching language skills, such as speaking, grammar aspect, not only in spoken aspect but also written one. Applying direct method in teaching and learning English should pay attention to the students and the characteristics of the materials that will be taught. The using of direct method should be continuously used in teaching and learning English as a foreign language or target language.

Abstract

Investigation related to reading comprehension has been conducted by a number of researchers and even some of them focussing their research on reading conprehension of narrative text. However, research on this respect needs pay more attention to be scrutinied. The aims of this research are to know and to describe the implementation of group work technique that improve students reading comprehension of narrative text. The problem raised in the research is about low scores of reading comprehension of narrative text gotten by eighth grade students of SMPN 13 Tangerang Selatan. The number of students is 40. Instrument used in this research is observation, questionnaire, and test. The technique is used in collecting data in the research is qualitative data. The qualitative data consisted of observation within the physical activity in the classroom. Moreover, the questionnaire for student is made to support in collecting the data. In analyzing qualitative data, rating scale table is used to measure the observation of students’ activities during teaching learning process. Meanwhile, some statistical formula is used in analyzing the numerical data. The findings of this study are: 1. Related to the test result, there are 20% or 8 students passing KKM in pre action test, 47.5% or 21 students passing KKM in cycle 1 test and 80% or 32 students passing KKM in cycle 2. 2. Related to the observation result, the students were more active and interested in learning reading activity in the classroom through group work technique. Furthermore, they could cooperative well with their group. It could be known that the students’ reading comprehension in term of narrative text has been improved and teacher was helped in finding the appropriate strategy in teaching reading narrative text

Abstract

this article to investigate the empirical evidence about the effect of Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review and Reciprocal Teaching Technique on Student’s Reading Comprehension for the eleventh grade of SMA Islam PB Soedirman. The research was applied quantitative method and the research design was quasi experimental study. There were two classes used in this research namely Class XI IPA 3 and IPA 4. Class XI IPA 3 was given RTT method as experiment class and Class XI IPA 4 was given SQ3R method as comparison class. Each class consisted of 36 students, so the total number was 72 students. This research was conducted by following procedures: giving pretest, implementing treatment and giving protest. The data was analyzed by two-ways ANOVA. The findings of this research were: (1) there was no effect of teaching methods towards students’ reading comprehension (2) there was interactional effect between teaching method and students’ learning style towards students’ reading comprehension (3) therewere differences of students’ reading comprehension score between students who own visual learning style in RTT and SQ3R class and those who own auditory learning style in class.

Abstract

This study is an analysis of illocutionary speech acts performed in Tom Cruise?s interview in promoting his movie. This study aims to describe the types as well as the functions of illocutionary speech acts performed by both the interviewer and the interviewee. Moreover, this study also describes the most and the least used illocutionary speech acts performed in the interview. This study uses qualitative method employing descriptive analysis design. The data source of this study is collected by downloading the video of the interview from YouTube. The data are observed and transcribed into written form. Furthermore, the data are categorized into some types of illocutionary speech acts. The result showed that there are four kinds of illocutionary speech acts which are performed in Tom Cruise?s interview which are representative, commissive, directive, and expressive. Here, the representative speech acts was categorized as the most performed speech in that interview. The result of the present study showed that Tom Cruise tended to convey his utterance to give statements of fact or to describe things that he believed to be true. Meanwhile, the percentage of the most performed or the most used speech acts to the least one in Tom Cruise?s interview is: representative (48.7%), expressive (38.5%), commissive (7.7%), directive (5.1%), and declarative (0%).

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the dimensions of texts, such as elements of representation, relations, and identity according to the Norman Fairclough discourse analysis displayed on the online news. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. Researchers began to analyze the data by reading the news of the February 2019 ATKP cadet death portal online, understanding the elements of the Norman Fairclough text dimension, and doing the technique to record the results in the reporting of the death of the ATKP cadet in February 2019. The reporting on the death of ATKP strains on February 9, 2019, entitled: Penganiayaan di Kampus Akademi Teknik Keselamatan Penerbangan (ATKP) dan Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran (PIP) Kota Makassar, dinilai warga sekitar, sudah menjadi hal biasa, and on February 10, 2019, entitled: Sepekan taruna ATKP Makassar tewas dianiaya seniornya, begini penanganan kasusnya posted on the tribun.com website became the primary data in this research. The results showed that some elements of text dimensions are on the news, such as representation, relations, and identity. It was found that Tribun-timur.com was relatively proportional in reporting the pros and cons of the event.

Abstract

Nowadays, advertising is no stranger to the wider community. We can commonly find advertisements through several media such as television, radio, magazines, billboards, and even YouTube. The present study attempts to investigate the type of illocutionary acts used in beauty product advertisement utterances in television broadcasts. The significance is to enrich the literature on speech acts used by advertisers, especially illocutionary acts in beauty products. This research's main data were several advertisements utterances of beauty products, such as shampoo advertisements, cosmetic advertisements, facial wash advertisements, and other related beauty advertisement products. Further, the data were described by a descriptive study.  In addition, data were gathered by downloading the advertisement from YouTube and taking note the conversation to analyse the utterances used in the advertisements. Furthermore, the data were analysed based on context advertisement utterances in the form of conversations on television broadcast and classified the utterances using the theory proposed by Searle about types of illocutionary act. There are five types of illocutionary by Searle: declarative, representative, expressive, directive, and commissive. Above all, the findings showed that the assertive function dominates in beauty advertisements and commissive is the type rarely used in beauty product advertisements.

A specific cartoon is commonly used to lead public opinion to a particular phenomenon. It is created to realize or to ask people opinions or thought on political issues. This study analyzed the satire of political cartoons selected in the themes of “ Rancangan Undang-Undang Kitab Undang-Undang Hukum Pidana ” (RUU KUHP) or The Draft of the Book of Criminal Law relating three articles on human right, livestock, and land in Indonesia in September 2019. This study identified the satirical messages delivered by cartoonists based on the verbal and visual as text analysis, discourse practices analysis on the netizens’ comments in cartoon column, and sociocultural analysis becoming the backdrop of these political cartoons. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method using a framework by Fairclough (2000). The findings showed that these political cartoons were used to satire the government and the House of Representatives to reject several drafts considered detrimental to society. This research is expected to be a useful input for the community to understand that cartoons can be used to convey social criticism. Also, people will realize that political cartoons are not only just fun for the humour, but also understand the message expressed by cartoonists in their work. For related media, cartoons can be used to convey social criticism by promoting its benefits for all levels of society.

Abstract

This study analyzed the feminist analysis of children fairytale "The Lazy Girl". In this case, the researchers selected the children fairytale from the perspective of modern feminism framework analysis and identified the moral values of this story. This study focused on the main character of the story drawn as brave and hardworking character. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive analysis. The researchers analyzed the text of the story from a YouTube channel based on the feminist approach. The finding showed that the second and the third wave of feminist characteristic were used in this story. The main character of this this story showed the brave and hardworking of young girl which related to the feminist framework. In addition, this story has good moral values for children and provides a positive impact for the children.
