Abstract

While there are a lot of debates surrounding isolated and integrated grammar teaching, there is still limited research on their uses in EFL settings with larger class sizes and different learning environments. To fill in this gap, this case study investigates teachers’ beliefs toward isolated grammar teaching (Focus on Forms/FoFs) and integrated grammar teaching (largely a version of Focus on Form/FonF) in the context of EFL tertiary language study in Indonesia. The data were obtained by conducting semi-structured interviews with 10 Indonesian teachers of a private university’s English language program. In general, the teachers tended to value one of the approaches for different aspects, but there was less consensus on their effectiveness to promote students’ ability to apply grammar in context. In spite of this, most considered the approaches to complement each other. Nevertheless, over half of the participants indicated that isolated grammar teaching should assume a primary role in their context for practical reasons. Drawing on mostly teachers' experience in grammar teaching, this small-scale research offers more crucial insights into how isolated and integrated grammar teaching like FonFs and FonF are viewed at a more practical level amidst controversies on how to best teach grammar.

Abstract

Abstrak SD Kristen Satya Wacana (SD Lab) merupakan sekolah yang menjadi laboratorium dan berada di lingkungan kampus Indonesia mini, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW). Sekolah Lab dikenal dengan kualitas siswanya yang baik, khususnya dalam bidang bahasa Inggris. Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni (FBS) yang menaungi Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Sastra Inggris, dan Seni Musik mengkolaborasikan musik daerah, dalam hal ini kolintang dan angklung dengan Choral Reading dalam bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini dimaksudkan untuk menghasilkan sebuah karya baru yang merupakan sinergi di antara 2 bidang yang berbeda. Dosen dan mahasiswa dari ketiga prodi tersebut bekerja sama dengan guru dan siswa SD Lab (kelas 3 - 6) untuk menghasilkan pertunjukan penampilan bersama dalam acara di UKSW sehingga sekaligus merupakan bentuk promosi dari SD Lab kepada khalayak. Bukan promosi SD Lab saja namun juga promosi FBS karena penampilan tersebut ditayangkan secara online. Kegiatan ini merupakan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (Pkm) yang didanai dengan pendanaan internal UKSW. Dari hasil luaran dari kegiatan ini diharapkan siswa SD Lab dapat lebih termotivasi untuk belajar dan menampilkan yang terbaik, khususnya dalam bidang seni daerah dan bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini diharapkan juga dapat menginspirasi kegiatan penelitian dan PkM yang merupakan kolaborasi dari beberapa bidang ilmu yang berbeda sehingga menghasilkan sebuah karya baru yang segar dan inovatif.

Abstract

In today's globalized world, school teachers and staff need to equip themselves with English skills not only for the classroom but also for broader communication. This community service program aimed to improve their general English competence for daily interactions by involving teachers and administrative staff of a private elementary school in Salatiga. The program began with a needs analysis through interviews to identify their English language needs. Based on these findings, the materials were designed and delivered using learner-centered methods. The training was conducted over five sessions, each lasting about 100 minutes, and incorporated technology to enhance engagement. As a result of the training, the participants reported positive benefits for their daily activities at school.
