Abstract

Cancer patients ecperiences various inpleasent symphtoms including fatigue, nausea and vomiting which could be included by the disease or its treatment which lead to poor adaptaition as result of inadequate self-management of chemotherapy side effect. This study was a cross sectional study with consecutive sampling. A total of 55 participants were join this study. Self management was assessed with questionnaire with reliability indekx of 0,75. Data analysis was done using chi square. The result shows a significant correlation between Self management to age (p value 0,027), gender (p value 0,012), management of fatigue (0,000), and management ofnausea and vomiting (p value 0,000). In conclusion, gender and educational level had significant influence on the respondent’s Self management ability. It was therefore, recommended that patients should be educated on strategies to manage post chemotherapy symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.

Abstract

One of the main barriers to cancer prevention and early detection is the general lack of awareness of cancer risk factors, symptoms, and screening options. Improving long-term cancer outcomes requires increasing public knowledge through interesting strategies with mobile app called PEKA. This study aims to identify cancer awareness among adults by given education mobile-app. This study used a quantitative descriptive method with 75 respondents. Descriptive analysis of the data was utilized to compile awareness and demographic traits. The result shows mostly 39,7% was answer incorrectly about cancer warning sign, 52% doesn’t know the screening programme, and the descriptive response displays a variety of responses. The results emphasize the benefits of multimodal, community-integrated teaching strategies, especially for individuals with poor computer literacy or educational achievement. PEKA and other mobile apps should be considered complementary tools rather than standalone solutions.

Abstract

Chemotherapy is a primary treatment modality for cancer, but it often results in adverse effects such as anemia due to decreased hemoglobin levels. Factors including age, chemotherapy frequency, and nutritional status may influence hemoglobin levels, particularly in rural areas with limited healthcare resources. To examine the relationship between age, chemotherapy frequency, and nutritional status and hemoglobin levels among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in a rural setting. This cross-sectional, correlational study involved 154 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Baladhika Husada Hospital, Jember, from July to September 2024. Data were collected through patient interviews, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and hemoglobin test results. Bivariate analysis using Spearman’s rank correlation was conducted to assess associations among variables. The majority of participants were aged 46–55 years (42.8%), had received 1–3 chemotherapy cycles (57.1%), and were at risk of malnutrition (45.5%). A significant association was found between age (p = 0.009, r = 0.191) and nutritional status (p = 0.014, r = 0.178) and hemoglobin levels. No significant association was found between chemotherapy frequency and hemoglobin levels (p = 0.60). Age and nutritional status are significantly associated with hemoglobin levels in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, while chemotherapy frequency is not. These findings highlight the need for individualized care and nutritional interventions, particularly for elderly patients in rural areas, to mitigate the risk of Chemotherapy-Induced Anemia

Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects over 10% of the global population (>800 million people) and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, and stroke. One of the primary treatments for CKD is hemodialysis, with arteriovenous (AV) shunt access used in approximately 92% of procedures. AV shunt installation is a surgical procedure often associated with increased patient anxiety. In addition to pharmacological treatment, non-pharmacological approaches such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) can be effective in reducing anxiety. This study aimed to determine the effect of PMR on the anxiety levels of patients undergoing pre-operative AV shunt installation. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group was used, involving 70 respondents at Jember Klinik Hospital, divided equally into intervention and control groups (n=35 each). Sampling was conducted using sequential sampling. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to measure anxiety levels, and data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results showed a significant decrease in anxiety in the intervention group after receiving PMR. The median anxiety score in the experimental group decreased from 42.66 (pre-test) to 29.57 (post-test), moving from moderate to mild anxiety. In contrast, the control group showed no significant change (pre-test median = 38.06; post-test = 40.03). The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.000 in the intervention group, indicating a significant difference before and after the intervention. These findings support the use of PMR as an effective complementary therapy to reduce anxiety in pre-operative CKD patients undergoing AV shunt surgery.
