Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out students’ learning stylepreference and its correlation with their English Proficiency. Theresearch questions were as follows (1) what are the most preferredlearning styles of EFL Learner at English Department? (2) Is thereany significant correlation between students’ learning stylepreferences and their English Proficiency? The study usedCorrelation design. The number of sample in this study was 35students from English department of Halu Oleo University in theacademic year who had followed TOEFL test. The data werecollected using questionnaire which adopted Perceptual Learning-Style Preference Questionnaire (PLSPQ), developed by John Reid(1987) consisting of 30 statements and student’s TOEFL score. Thedata of this study were analyzed through descriptive statistic andLinear Regression Analysis. The results showed that (1) majorlearning style were tactile learning style and kinesthetic learningstyle (2) The coefficient correlation was 0.070 which was greaterthan 0.05 (level of significance). It means that there was nocorrelation between students’ learning style and their Englishproficiency.Keywords: Student’s Learning Style, English Proficiency.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating the effect of Microsoft office PowerPoint on student competence in writing descriptive text. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. This research used a pre-experimental with One-Group Pretest-Posttest design (class VIII). The total sample was 30 students which were selected by using the probability sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a writing test that focused on two aspects of writing namely vocabulary and language use. The researcher collected the data by giving pre-test and post-test to know students writing competence before and after treatment of Microsoft office PowerPoint had been applied. The researcher used Microsoft excel 2010 and SPSS 16.0 to analyze the result of this research. The finding showed that there was an effect of Microsoft office PowerPoint on students' writing competence. The result of the descriptive analysis showed the mean score of pre-test was 51.76 and the mean score of post-test was 79.70. The inferential statistics showed that there was a significant effect of Microsoft Office PowerPoint on students' writing competence. Hence, teaching and learning writing use Microsoft office PowerPoint can be one of the effective methods for upgrading students‟ writing competence

Abstract

This study is conducted to examine whether there is any significant effect of Free writing technique on students' writing skills at X MIPA 1 in SMAN 6 Kendari or not. This research was conducted in pre-experimental research design. The population of this research was all the first grade science program students (X MIPA) of SMAN 6 Kendari. The total of population was 207 students which consisted of 6 classes. The sample of this research was X MIPA 1 which consists of 35 students. The data of this research were collected by giving the students pre-test and post-test in the form of written test that related to the topic of Recount Text. Then, the data were analyzed by using SPSS 17.0 version and used descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. For testing the hypothesis of this study, the researcher used paired sample t-test which was calculated by SPSS 17.0. The result shows that there is significant effect of free writing technique on students' writing skills. It can be seen from students’ developments in their writing on recount text. In the pre-test, students found it hard to write a recount text, while in the post-test after treatment, most students can write a recount text. In other words, H1 is accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of free writing technique on students' writing skills. Furthermore, the result of the finding above also shows that free writing technique can improve several things such as students' motivation and self-confidence.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the types of plagiarism found in students Skripsi at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University, and to know the common factors that make students commit plagiarism. This research used descriptive qualitative research design and employed content analysis method. The researcher used 3 soft copies Skripsi of 2018 and 2020 of the graduated students and the interview result as the data sources. The instruments of this study were a checklist types of plagiarism adopted from KP Nasional (2014) and an interview guideline. In collecting and analysing the data, the researcher used a checklist that consisted of 1 to 5 types and the researcher would be giving the codes for every element that fulfil the criteria from Kementerian (2010) by manual checking using the help of Quetext software, and also used interview guideline to gain the data needed about the factors that make students commit plagiarism in their Skripsi. The results of this research show that: there are some types of plagiarism found in students Skripsi through first types (citing terms, words, or sentence of data and information from source) with a frequency of 11 paragraphs in entire students Skripsi, and the second types (randomly quoting terms, words, sentences or information from source) with a frequency of 6 paragraphs in entire students Skripsi, and third types through (using sources of ideas, opinions, or theories from original sources) with frequency 18 paragraphs in entire student Skripsi 3. There are several factors that make students commit plagiarism including friend’s relation, personal ability, technology support, and less understanding of knowledge from students. To conclude, it is clear that plagiarism of idea is the most dominant type of plagiarism found in students Skripsi at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University.
