Abstract

Abstract

Empirically, turmeric tamarind is used to relieve pain and inflammation and ease menstrual cramps. However, conventional herbal preparations are currently less popular, especially among teenagers. Effervescent turmeric tamarind formulations are an innovative, practical pharmaceutical preparation with the advantage of a pleasant taste, which helps disguise the bitter flavor of turmeric. This product also provides a refreshing effect due to the acid-base reaction that produces carbon dioxide (CO2). This study aims to evaluate the physical test of effervescent turmeric tamarind granules. This experimental study formulates three turmeric-tamarind effervescent granule formulas by varying the turmeric extract dosage (Curcuma longa) to 250 mg, 500 mg, and 750 mg. The evaluations performed include organoleptic tests, water content, flow properties and angle of repose, dissolving time, and pH testing. The results showed that turmeric extract (Curcuma longa) and tamarind (Tamarindus indica) can be formulated into effervescent granules—the three formulas with different variations of turmeric extract produced good physical quality test results. Variations in the concentration of turmeric extract did not affect the physical quality of the granules.

Abstract

Background: Asthma is a chronic non-communicable disease that significantly affects the pediatric population. Severe exacerbations can disrupt daily activities, increase morbidity, and even lead to mortality. Effective management of asthma requires a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. The Buteyko Breathing Technique (BBT) is a non-pharmacological therapy designed to reduce the frequency of asthma attacks and improve breathing patterns. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Buteyko breathing technique on clinical parameters, specifically respiratory rate and oxygen saturation, in pediatric asthma patients at Panembahan Senopati Regional General Hospital. Methods: This quantitative study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach. A sample of 11 pediatric patients, aged 5 to 18 years, was selected through convenience sampling. The inclusion criteria included children who were hospitalized for a minimum of three days, received bronchodilator therapy, and were willing to participate in the study. Clinical parameters, such as oxygen saturation and respiratory rate, were measured before and after the intervention using pulse oximetry and manual counting. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: The analysis revealed that the Buteyko breathing technique significantly reduced respiratory rates on the first day of the intervention (p < 0.001). However, there was no significant effect of the intervention on oxygen saturation levels (p > 0.05). Conclusion and recommendation: The Buteyko breathing technique is effective in reducing respiratory rates in pediatric asthma patients; however, it did not significantly alter oxygen saturation in this pilot study. It can be recommended as a complementary non-pharmacological management approach in conjunction with standard bronchodilator therapy. Further research with a larger sample size and a control group is needed to validate these findings.

Abstract

The fast growth of artificial intelligence (AI) has created new opportunities for technology-enhanced language learning, especially in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for health science students. This study explores students’ perceptions of an AI-integrated interactive e-book developed for health science ESP courses. A mixed-method design was employed with 55 students from Nursing, Midwifery, and Pharmacy programs at Universitas Madani. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and reflective responses. The descriptive analysis showed an overall mean perception score of 76.51 (SE = 1.814; 95% CI = 72.87–80.15), with a median of 81.00, higher than the mean, suggesting above-average perceptions for most students. A standard deviation of 13.455 indicated considerable variation, with scores ranging from 39 to 90 (range = 51; IQR = 18). Item-level means ranged from 4.0 to 4.4, indicating positive responses in terms of accessibility, navigability, relevance of AI features, and motivational impact. Qualitative reflections revealed that students valued adaptive learning, real-time feedback, and improved confidence in medical English communication, while challenges included internet connectivity, chatbot limits, and initial adjustment. Overall, the AI-integrated e-book was perceived as useful, engaging, and relevant, though further improvements such as multimedia and simulations. This study concludes that AI-powered e-books have strong potential to advance ESP instruction in healthcare education.
