Abstract

This study attempted to apply the hypocrisy induction principle in a real-life setting, a behavioral modification method in which cognitive dissonance was invoked in order to dissuade people from certain undesirable behavior. The aim of this experiment was testing the effect of hypocrisy induction in decreasing plagiarism among students. 136 high school students in their second year were categorized into four groups (hypocrisy, commitment only, mindful only, control), and given a task in which plagiarism was made possible. The tasks submitted by the students were given a plagiarism score using a program that matches them with online articles. Data analysis showed that the hypocrisy induction did not produce a significant effect on plagiarism. 92% of participants committed plagiarism in varying levels, indicating a banality of plagiarism in the school. The implications of these results on plagiarism prevention were discussed. Keywords: plagiarism, hypocrisy induction, cognitive dissonance, experiment

Abstract

The current study aimed at describing the life of undergraduate student of Faculty of PsychologyAtma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia through peer group dynamics. Peer group oftendetermined who will be asked to join for doing an academic group task (‘kelompok tugas’), whowill be chosen to hang out together (‘teman nongkrong’), dan who can be trusted to talk aboutpersonal issues (‘teman curhat’). Peer groups were not static, thus we also explored peer groupdynamics based on time dimension, i.e. beginning (‘semester 2’), middle (‘semester 4’) and end(‘semester 6’) period of study. An explorative-descriptive research design with sociometric methodswere used in the study. Participants were 126 undergraduate students from the same year of entry.Data were analyzed by means of sociomatrix, choice status of a person and sociogram. The resultsshowed the differences peer group dynamics between situations (kelompok tugas, teman nongkrong, teman curhat) and between periods of study (semester 2, semester 4, semester 6). This studyrevealed the possible use of sociometric methods for policy socialization strategy and as a methodfor identifying potential academic and non-academic problems.

Abstract

Abstract

How mental illness is perceived by the members of a particular society will determine their treatment of those they regard as mentally ill. A primary factor which shapes the understanding of mental disorders and those who suffer from them are the social discourses that revolve around them as social objects. This study was conducted in order to understand the social representation of mental disorders among community members of Ciomas Subdistrict in Serang, Banten, and how the community as a social group views mental disorders and related physical restraints through social discourse. The dynamics of common understandings of mental disorder was investigated via the dialogical approach of Social Representation Theory, specifically by using the concept of themata. Themata is an underlying deep structure of meanings that provides a basis to the establishment of a social representation. Through a qualitative focused group discussion, participants were asked to convey and describe their understanding of mental disorders. Three underlying antinomies were identified, where each contributes to shaping a common understanding of mental disorders, namely [1] supernatural–natural, [2] inhuman–human, and [3] nature–nurture. These antinomies not only explain the underlying understanding of mental disorders but also serve as a ground in understanding various treatments for people with mental disorders in the community, including physical restraints.

Abstract

Seniority is a social phenomenon that is naturally found in the school environment. At SMAN A, seniority has been abused by senior students. Meanwhile, at SMAN B, seniority has been applied positively. This difference indicates that there were unique meanings given to the junior students by the seniors in the two schools. This study aims to understand these differences by using social representations theory with the structural approach. The study was conducted in two stages. Free association method was used in the first stage to discover the attributes of social representation of junior students. Researchers asked 206 participants at SMAN A and 198 participants at SMAN B to write down the things that came to mind when they read the word "junior students". The second stage aims to identify the attributes of the central core and peripherals. A total of 92 participants from SMAN A and 92 participants from SMAN B were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The data were analyzed with the centrality test and chi-square test. The results show 18 attributes of social representation of junior students. At SMAN A, attributes of central core are [1] charming appearance and [2] the orientation of students and attribute of peripherals are [1] negative behaviors, [2] the targets of mistreatment, [3] unique appearance, [4] peeve, [5] new students, and [6] paltry. At SMAN B, attributes of central core are [1] charming appearance, [2] the orientation of students, [3] good relationships, and [4] positive behaviors and attributes of peripherals are [1] cool, [2] need to be nurtured, [3] new students, and [4] different generations. This results show differences in social representation of junior students in twelfth-graders at SMAN A and SMAN B. This study suggests that SMAN A make innovation in school regarding to student activities by looking up to SMAN B.

Abstract

Data dianalisis dengan 2-way analysis of variance.

Abstract

The penetration of Hallyu culture in Indonesia is becoming increasingly widespread, as indicated by the growing popularity of K-pop, K-drama, K-movie, and K-variety shows. Hallyu culture can shift the perception of the ideal man in Indonesian society, especially among teenage girls. This study aims to compare the social representation of the ideal man between teenage girls who are fans of Hallyu and those who are not. Data collection was conducted in two stages: a questionnaire using the word association method to identify social representation attributes, and a questionnaire using the double denial technique, which was tested using chi-square goodness of fit ⅔ expected frequency to determine central core and peripheral attributes. The first stage involved 220 participants with an average age of 16 years (SD = 1.73), while the second stage involved 235 participants with an average age of 17 years (SD = 2.57).Overall, the results showed no difference in the social representation of the ideal man between the two groups, with nine central core attributes (i.e., well-behaved, intelligent and talented in various fields, affectionate to their partner, humorous, religious, committed to the relationship, caring for family, understanding, and able to control emotions) and two peripheral attributes (i.e., attractive appearance and financially stable).

Abstract

Banten is one of the provinces that ranks first in health centers that organize mental health efforts. In Banten Province, the prevalence of patients with mental disorders who received treatment and were not abandoned was only 32.16%. With adequate knowledge and access to mental health services, there is no behavior to seek formal psychological help in there. This study aims to understand the meaning of mental disorders in Bantenese society using social representation theory with a structural approach and divided into two stages. The first stage aims to find the attributes of social representations of mental disorders using the word association method. There were 172 participants who participated in the first stage with a total of 929 responses. The categorization process was carried out, and 36 categories were obtained. Content analysis resulted in a Cohen's Kappa value of .588. The second stage aims to map the central core and peripheral attributes using the double denial technique. Results from 181 participants were tested with chi-square goodness of fit expected frequency. The social representation of mental illness in Banten society includes 17 attributes, 12 attributes of central core elements, and five attributes of peripheral elements. The results showed that Banten people have sufficient knowledge related to mental illness and sources of help. However, people still have negative views, concerns, cost considerations, feelings of helplessness, and confidentiality issues. Psychoeducation can be recommended as an intervention to increase public knowledge and shake abnormal and crazy attributes in peripheral elements.
