Abstract

Every religion has teachings related to the best ways to cope with problems, including those caused by natural disasters. Thus, natural disasters can reshape the construction of religious attitudes among the community. Therefore, this research aims to understand how natural disasters are perceived by religious leaders in the aftermath of earthquakes in Palu and Lombok and how these perceptions impact the community's views on ideal religious attitudes after a disaster. This research employs a phenomenological approach with thematic data analysis techniques applied to research data collected through interviews with various religious leaders and community members in Lombok Island and Palu City, two regions that experienced natural disaster events in 2018. The research findings suggest that, despite the resurgence of a back-to-nature sentiment following the disasters in Lombok, for the Wetu Telu Muslim community, this sentiment carries a deeper meaning than merely promoting an environmentally conscious way of life. It signifies a return to a way of life rooted in traditions passed down through generations, a way of life that has been eroded by the modernization brought about by the proselytizing efforts of the majority Muslim group over the past five decades. In Palu City, the earthquake and tsunami disaster in 2018 has also shaped the community's perception of disasters and influenced their religious behaviors in the post-disaster society. In general, three common perspectives were identified. First, a majority believes the disaster is a form of divine admonition from Allah due to various deviant behaviors in the society. Second, some believe the disaster is a result of the shifting of the Palu-Koro fault plates, an unavoidable natural event, grounded in empirical knowledge sources and disaster facts. Third, Muslim groups view the disaster as a test from Allah. These three perspectives have essentially shaped a unique religious attitude among the community expressed in various forms of religiosity.

Abstract

Why Islamists Go Green. Politics, Religion and the Environment by Emmanuel Karagiannis. Edinburgh University Press, 2023. Islamist groups have been examined from various perspectives, with most studies focused on these groups’ use of violence, which provides a misleading perspective of how Muslim societies evolve and how they interact with the rest of the world. As a result, there is a lack of focus on Islamist movements’ relationship with the environment. Emmanuel Karagiannis’s Why Islamists Go Green is the first well-researched work that reveals important trends in how Islamism interacts with the environment (p. xi). The author focuses on five Islamist groups – the Muslim Brotherhood, Hizb ut-Tahrir, Hizbullah, Hamas, and Salafi-jihadist groups such as al-Qaeda and ISIS – and the religious and political foundations for the formation of their green policies based on Islamic texts, rulings and principles (p. 10). The author’s argument convincingly sheds light on the basic principles and essence of Islamist environmentalism as it includes extensive literature and interviews with representatives of these movements and an analysis of online resources and initiatives from the various parties and groups (pp. 11-13).

Abstract

UINSI has developed KKN activities including a series of interdisciplinary integrative activities that are strategically packaged to solve problems completely and carried out with the community by playing the community as an important and main actor and involving other relevant stakeholders. We raised the title of the activity "Paradigm and effectiveness of UINSI students in helping to advance the Bunga Putih village." The mechanism of this activity has five stages, namely determination, implementation, evaluation of implementation, control, and improvement (PPEPP). The results of this KKN activity were able to make Bunga Putih village better and more advanced in the future. Keywords: Paradigm, Effectiveness, Program

Abstract

M. Quraish Shihab is often considered to be the scholar having the significant influence and role toward the study of the tafsir in contemporary Indonesia. However, the role and influence have not been well discussed yet. This writing found that M. Quraish Shihab indeed has a significant role and influence. Thematic tafsir which becomes the trend of the contemporary tafsir in Indonesia is formed under the influence and the role of M. Quraish Shihab. He was among the first to initiate and manage a thematic interpretation study project in the Indonesian academic world. In addition to being a supervisor for writing thematic interpretations carried out by his students, his activeness in producing works of thematic interpretations is also his wayof transmitting his exegesis ideas, and because of that he can influence the dynamics of contemporary Indonesian tafsir studies. Not only that, he also affects the dynamics of the object of study of the tafsir. This influence can be seen from the proliferation of studies that examine his commentary ideas and are inspired by his commentary ideas. In fact, his significant influence can also be seen from the emergence of variousappreciations and criticisms directed to him and his interpretative ideas.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a simple pyrolysis device as an alternative solution for plastic waste management in Uko Village, Muara Komam District, Paser Regency. The increasing volume of unmanaged plastic waste has caused environmental and social problems, requiring appropriate technology that can be applied at the household or community level. An experimental approach was employed by designing and testing a pyrolysis system using a pressure cooker as the reactor. The process was conducted at 325°C with 453 grams of LDPE and PS plastics. The experiment produced 195 ml of clear yellowish pyrolysis oil with a yield of approximately 43%. This oil has a calorific value comparable to diesel fuel, making it a potential alternative energy source for rural communities. Implementing this technology within a Community Service Program (PKM) in Uko Village provided dual benefits—reducing plastic waste accumulation while raising community awareness of sustainable waste management. Furthermore, the produced pyrolysis oil can be used as household fuel, reducing expenses and offering new economic opportunities. Thus, this simple pyrolysis innovation effectively supports plastic waste reduction and empowers rural communities toward a circular economy based on renewable energy.
