Abstract

The study aims to find out the attention system, especially, the focus of attention patterns, on news articles related to the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment allegations case. Qualitative descriptive methods were used in this study. The data was taken from the BBC and the stylist's broadcasting article about the case. The results show that the figure-ground organization as an element in the focus of attention patterns is mapped and clearly constructed. Weinstein, who fits the role of the perpetrator, reasoned on the victim and the attention of the news writer's article that formed the ground, while the victim and other entities set the ground in the sentence. This reasoned and background phenomenon shows that the cognition of victims and news writers places more attention and perception on perpetrators than other entities.

Abstract

This article describes how the values of tasamuh (religious tolerance) are integrated into the Islamic private learning curriculum and manifested in the social life of the people in Australia. Islamic values are believed by both Muslim and non-Muslim communities to create social stability, amidst the phenomenon of Islamophobia and securalization in Australia. Not only integration, but Islamic values are realized in schools and social life so as to form a harmonious and anti-conflict life order. This research is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected from interviews and documentation studies. The findings show that Islamic education in Australia has experienced rapid development since the time when the education curriculum internalized tasamuh in social life. The integration of the concept of tasamuh in the Islamic College of Melbourne Australia educational institution is in the form of the inclusion of the value of tasamuh (tolerance), ukhuwah (brotherhood) and ta’aruf (getting to know each other). These values are internalized in the curriculum, especially in the aspects of learning and output. Third, the construction of the concept of tasamuh at the Islamic College of Melbourne Australia is realized in the school and social environment through extracurricular activities, social care and national events.

Abstract

Findings from Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research, which offer critical insights into how learners acquire and process language, are often overlooked in the development of curricula and textbooks for early English Language Teaching (ELT). This raises questions about the feasibility of the learning objectives promoted in these materials. To address this gap, this study analyzes a junior high school EFL textbook within the framework of Processability Theory (PT) to examine whether the sequencing of grammatical structures aligns with the teachability hierarchy predicted by PT. The analysis focuses on the grading of grammatical structures and compares their distribution with the stages of acquisition prescribed by PT. The findings reveal only a partial alignment with the PT hierarchy, highlighting a disconnect between textbook design and learners' developmental stages. This misalignment is largely due to the theme-based approach being adopted by the textbook and therefore highlights the need for textbook writers, curriculum developer and English teacher to better integrate SLA research into developing textbooks, particularly in the context of the Kurikulum Merdeka, which emphasizes learner-centered education and learners’ cognitive liberation.

Abstract

This research was intended to investigate the effect of a culture-based approach in improving students’ reading comprehension on spoof text. For that purpose, a true experimental study was applied to the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Soreang. The sample of this study was 88 students from that school. These students were divided equally into the control and experimental group. The experimental group was given the Culture-Based Approach (CBA) as the treatment in comprehending the text. The students’ scores of pre-test and post-test from both groups were statistically analyzed and compared by the T-test. The findings could be summarized that generally, students from the experimental group gained better achievement than from the control group on their post-test scores. The data analysis also showed that there was a significant difference between the mean score of the pre-test (53.45) and the post-test (58.39.). Furthermore, the result of the t-test (5.707) was relatively higher than the t- table (2.018) for a 0.5 percent level of significance. It indicated that the students’ achievement was significantly improved after the treatment of using a Culture-Based Approach. Thus, it is recommended that a Culture-Based Approach should be considered as an alternative choice for English teachers in teaching spoof text.

Abstract

The study intends to see the interlanguage morphological structure observed in communicative tasks of ten Indonesian learners of English as a Foreign Language.  To achieve this purpose, Qualitative method with quantified data is employed in this study embracing the cross-sectional approach. The data are taken from the utterances produced by 10 (ten) L2 learners who performed three different communicative tasks; semi-structure interviews, 5 picture descriptions, 2 spot differences. The researcher found 356 English morphological structures produced by the learners, and 66 of them are analysed as data samples the analysis is started by profiling their morphological acquisition. It helps the researcher to provide a vivid picture of their English morphological development stage. After analysing the data, the result shows that the English morphological structures produced by the L2 learners in this study are divided into three types:  Suppliance, non - suppliance and over – suppliance structures. Suppliance structure refers to structure that is received by grammatical rules in standard English. Meanwhile, the other two types of structure refer to idiosyncratic structures as an innate characteristic of interlanguage morphology. Besides, English morphological development stage is compatible with the Processability Theory (PT). The learners who have acquired higher morphological structure also have already acquired lower morphological structure.
