Abstract

Abstract: Learners’ ability in carrying out communicative activities is highly demanded in the spoken English classroom. This paper discusses some aspects that should be taken into account when conducting a spoken English class in relation to raising pragmatic awareness through the inclusion of pragmatic instruction in the classroom. Some theoretical reviews for the inclusion of pragmatic instruction are also discussed. Through the inclusion of instruction in pragmatics in the spoken English classroom, learners are expected to develop their pragmatic competence and, therefore, are able to communicate naturally despite the fact that the full range of interactions with native speakers is limited.   Key words: communicative activity, pragmatic instruction, pragmatic competence

Abstract

A Story is an effective media in nurturing language development particularly for children. A children story should be appropriated with its readers. One of its appropriateness indicator can be investigated by seeing its morphological aspect like inflectional words in it. This study is aimed at investigating the inflectional words and their types in English children story which may indicate its level of difficulty and its function. The descriptive qualitative study is employed embracing the characteristics of document analysis. The data taken from three different children stories which then are analyzed utilizing the inflectional theory proposed by Booij (2008). It is found that the verb inflection and adjective inflection, respectively, become predominant inflection that can be found on every story. It may indicate that children stories emphasize on process of doing and process of describing thing The finding is also drawn a conclusion that the length of the story is in line with the number of inflectional words. Keywords: Inflectional words, Children story, Morphology.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Studies on interpersonal meaning have been well documented. However, few studies explored interpersonal meaning in the area of research articles. In responding to this, the present study tried to reveal interpersonal meaning in RAs’ discussion sections. The data taken were from five reputable international journals categorized in the subject of language and linguistics indexed by Scopus with the SJR value above one. Having been analyzed by using the theory of modality from Halliday (1994), the data demonstrated that three types of modality values were identified such as high, middle, and low. In addition, there were some disparities among the results investigated. If sequenced, the low outnumbered the middle and the high values. This suggested that the authors had different assessments towards the topics written.

Abstract

The study intends to see the interlanguage morphological structure observed in communicative tasks of ten Indonesian learners of English as a Foreign Language.  To achieve this purpose, Qualitative method with quantified data is employed in this study embracing the cross-sectional approach. The data are taken from the utterances produced by 10 (ten) L2 learners who performed three different communicative tasks; semi-structure interviews, 5 picture descriptions, 2 spot differences. The researcher found 356 English morphological structures produced by the learners, and 66 of them are analysed as data samples the analysis is started by profiling their morphological acquisition. It helps the researcher to provide a vivid picture of their English morphological development stage. After analysing the data, the result shows that the English morphological structures produced by the L2 learners in this study are divided into three types:  Suppliance, non - suppliance and over – suppliance structures. Suppliance structure refers to structure that is received by grammatical rules in standard English. Meanwhile, the other two types of structure refer to idiosyncratic structures as an innate characteristic of interlanguage morphology. Besides, English morphological development stage is compatible with the Processability Theory (PT). The learners who have acquired higher morphological structure also have already acquired lower morphological structure.

Abstract

Understanding cross-cultural communication is an important aspect of determining the success of communication. Understanding cross-cultural communication is the key to the success of communication (Griffin, 2010). Differences in cultural value orientation also cause differences in cross-cultural communication. What is considered good or bad behaviour, appropriate or inappropriate, polite or impolite in one culture is often perceived as different or contradictory to other cultures. This paper discusses cross-cultural understanding for international students regarding salutations and cultural expressions in the Indonesian language from a sociolinguistics point of view. This research uses a descriptive method. The data collection technique was done virtually by interviewing and filling out questionnaires. By applying the theory of Gudykunst (2003) and Gudykunst and Ting-Toomey (in Jati, 2013), this study quantitatively tested the impact of culture on direct and indirect communication. There are so many theories that discuss the differentiating factors in the emergence of cross-cultural communication. (Liliweri, 2009) explains that several systems cause differences in cross-cultural communication. The study results reveal that cultural expressions should consider cultural aspects in addressing people in certain cultures. The aspects emerge in the stratification of people in society by politely addressing them for those who are respected. They can give titles when addressing them in their equality, the same status, the same position, and other cultural perspectives. The use of the title Bapak/Pak, Ibu/Bu, Mbak, Mas, Adik/Dik, and Kakak/Kak need the students' cultural knowledge. Moreover, the study indicates how international students in Indonesian academic settings should understand implicit cultural expressions such as mau ke mana, dari mana, and apa kabar. Those expressions tend to be understood not only linguistically but also culturally.
