Abstract

This study critically analyzes Donald Trump's 2024 campaign speech using Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework to explore how his rhetorical strategies construct power relations and reinforce ideological divisions. By examining key rhetorical devices such as pronouns, metaphors, hyperbole, and Repetition, the study reveals how Trump's language fosters a collective identity among his supporters, positioning them as defenders of "true" American values. The analysis also demonstrates how Trump employs a problem-solution structure to portray himself as the sole solution to issues like immigration, economic instability, and national security. The study further contextualizes Trump's rhetoric within broader discursive practices, showing how the speech resonates with populist themes of institutional distrust and nationalism. By drawing on socio-cultural trends such as the rise of populism and media fragmentation, Trump effectively mobilizes his base while deepening ideological divides. The "us versus them" narrative, a hallmark of populist discourse, is examined in light of Fairclough's and van Dijk's theories, highlighting the role of language in shaping social realities and power dynamics. Through this analysis, the research aims to shed light on the broader implications of political discourse in maintaining and challenging power structures within a divided society.

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to give an English training for Jampang English Village (JEV) students while participating in English competition. The object of this project is the students of JEV Bogor. Total physical response (TPR) is using in this method through giving the strategies; how they correctly use their body language when facing English competition and how to interact with the audience while standing in front of the stage. At the end of the activities, the contestants comprehend the techniques of English training related to poetry, short story, and speech.

Abstract

Derasnya arus globalisasi dipicu oleh lingkungan dengan aktifitas yang sangat padat bisa memicu anak- anak kehilangan kesempatan untuk mengenal nilai-nilai kearifan lokal. Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat oleh dosen dan mahasiswa jurusan Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Pamulang bertujuan untuk menanamkan nilai-nilai kearifan lokal melalui teknik bercerita bagi peserta didik Taman Baca Masyarakat (TBM) Kolong Jembatan Ciputat. Kegiatan pengabdian ini juga bertujuan untuk memberikan pengetahuan dan meningkatkan literasi berbahasa Inggris. Sasaran pengabdian ini adalah 52 anak anak yang tinggal di sekitar kolong jembatan tersebut. Cerita rakyat yang diangkat adalah Asal-Usul Cikaputrian dan Asal-Usul Gunung Pinang yang sarat akan nilai-nilai kemanusiaan. Selain kegiatan bercerita, kegiatan lainnya seperti berdiskusi, permainan dan hiburan edukatif diberikan untuk memberikan wawasan bagi peserta dalam situasi yang menyenangkan. Melalui teknik bercerita, para peserta memiliki pengalaman kegiatan yang menarik dan berguna dalam membentuk karakter yang positif seperti menghormati orang tua, peduli terhadap sesama masyarakat, dan memiliki akhlak yang terpuji sesuai dengan nilai moral yang ada dalam cerita.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas metode pelatihan mendengarkan lagu English songs dalam meningkatkan kemampuan mendengarkan bahasa Inggris peserta di Taman Baca Kolong Flyover Ciputat Tangerang Selatan. Dengan melibatkan 30 peserta dengan rata-rata usia 25 tahun dan latar belakang pendidikan yang beragam, penelitian ini dilakukan selama 4 minggu dengan sesi pelatihan yang mencakup pemutaran lagu, analisis lirik, dan latihan mendengarkan aktif. Analisis hasil pre tes menunjukkan variasi tingkat pemahaman mendengarkan, dengan skor rata-rata peserta sekitar 60 dari 100 poin. Hasil pre tes ini mengidentifikasi area kesulitan, termasuk ketidakpahaman konteks, kesulitan memahami aksen, vokabulari terbatas, dan kesulitan mengenali nuansa. Metode pelatihan yang diterapkan membuktikan efektivitasnya, dengan hasil post tes menunjukkan peningkatan yang signifikan, yakni rata-rata peningkatan sebesar 25%. Analisis statistik menggunakan uji t menunjukkan perbedaan yang signifikan antara hasil pre tes dan post tes (p < 0.05). Pelatihan tidak hanya meningkatkan kemampuan mendengarkan tetapi juga motivasi dan partisipasi peserta. Analisis menyeluruh menunjukkan bahwa pemutaran lagu membantu peserta terbiasa dengan variasi aksen dan gaya berbicara, sementara analisis lirik mendalam memperkaya pemahaman kosakata dan frasa-frasa penting. Rekomendasi untuk pengembangan program selanjutnya mencakup diversifikasi materi lagu, evaluasi berkala, dan penguatan kerjasama dengan pemerintah daerah dan komunitas. Diharapkan hasil penelitian ini dapat memberikan kontribusi bagi pengembangan metode pelatihan mendengarkan bahasa Inggris yang inovatif dan berkelanjutan di tingkat komunitas.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to create e-learning material of English for tourism personnel in Labuan Bajo. This study was a research and development one. The outcome of this research was learning devices in the form of module. This study refers to Borg and Gall’s development research procedure consisting collecting data, planning, product draft development, expert validation, revision, and field test. There were two kinds of data in this study; qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data was in the form of suggestions from validator regarding module, as well as the results of observation and interview. Meanwhile the quantitative data was obtained from the participant’s result of pretest and postest. The posttest results showed that there was an increase in scores of 37% from the participants' average scores. This showed that materials in the form of module were effective in improving the English language skills of tourism actors in Labuan Bajo. Apart from that, the material in the form of a module has met all the criteria in terms of content feasibility and presentment feasibility by validators who are experts in their fields.
