Abstract

Model United Nations (MUN) as a teaching method is being developed to be implemented in many schools in many countries to acquire the demands of living in international community. High schools in Indonesia started practicing it in 2010. As this is quite new, its practicality is still frequently rare and quite complicated to do. Therefore, this study aimed at researching the students’ enthusiasm towards model united nations as a path to know whether this kind of teaching method is acceptable for them. The subjects of the research were 40 students of PondokPesantren Modern Darul Mursyid, Tapanuli Selatan, North Sumatera who joined the school’s English club. This is a qualitative research designed in a case study employing three instruments in collecting the data; interview, observation, and documentation. The interview showed that the students were enthusiastic to implement MUN, curious to know further, and engaged with all of the activities. The observation showed that the students were active, consistent and discipline in following all the activities. While the documentation showed that their success in implementing this kind of teaching method was equipped by their sufficient background of English language mastery. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the students’ enthusiasm towards MUN was sophisticatedly high and their capacity to follow the teaching method was satisfying. These findings imply its possibility to be implemented in the class. The suggestion is addressed for teachers to simplify the procedures to make its practicality more tangible to do.

Abstract

Abstract. As a written representation of society, novel contains sociolinguistic issues which deserve a comprehensive analysis one of which is the use of slang words. This study explored slang words used in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, a novel written by Jesse Andrews. The aims of this study were to categorize types of slang words used in the novel and to explain the interpretations of them. The data were collected from the dialogues in the novel. Using qualitative approach, the writer used the theory of Chapman (1988) to classify the data into their types. To explain the interpretations of slang words, the writer analyzed the role relationship among the speakers, the way the actors speak, and the meaning of each slang word found using slang dictionaries.  The analysis reveals that as the relationship among the actors are equal and they naturally raise within the community, actors in the novel dominantly use primary slang words. Conversation using secondary slang words take place when the actors are not engaged within the community. Keywords: Novel, Slang Words, Sociolinguistics

Abstract

The role of mass media is inevitably significant for people’s everyday life. As one of mass media, newspaper is very effective not only in informing the readers but also in influencing their principles and belief regarding to certain issues. However, texts published in newspapers potentially goes unsuitable for the targeted readers making its significance in informing and influencing less optimal. Accordingly, it is necessary to research the language styles of newspapers to optimize its power of significance in influencing the potential or targeted readers. This is a descriptive analysis study employing systemic functional linguistics (SFL) in analyzing the language styles of texts published by two popular mass media; The Jakarta Post and National Geographic. The analysis tools underpinned by SFL used in this study are the lexical system of congruency, lexicogrammar of complex-simplex clauses, conjunctive relations, and complexity of verbal and nominal groups of the news. The results show that (1) the targeted readers of the news are adult; (2) the use of incongruent lexis, internal conjunction, simple clause, complex group both verbal and nominal, and generic participant are more frequently employed; accordingly (3) written style is employed more often than spoken style. The findings drive to the conclusions that most of the news’ language styles go appropriate to the targeted readers. It means that its power to inform and influence the readers goes optimal. However, the linguistic techniques need improving in order the texts sound more intelligible to the targeted readers.

Abstract

Community service underpinned within English for tourism is rarely conducted to the practitioners. Whereas, it is urgent to do that residents living in the tourism spots and are intensely mingled in the tourism services need knowledge and skills in both communication and tourism insights. These skills will be helpful for them to interact more potential tourists to come. One of them is the tourist attraction of Bandulu beach, Anyer, Banten. In connection with this, concrete steps to provide practical English training for residents around the tourist area must be implemented immediately to improve English proficiency which is one of the reasons why the tourists visit the tourist attraction. Local government data states that only 1-5% of visitors to Bandulu beach tourism are foreign tourists. That is, if in 1 month there are 1000 visitors then only 10 to 50 foreign tourists. In fact, Wiyatno (2013) stated that foreign tourist visits to Indonesia have increased almost every year. The potential number of foreign tourists should be supported by human resources with tourism insight and proficiency in foreign languages, especially good English so that communication with general English in the tourism sector can be carried out. Master, P. (1998,) said the need for mastery of English is increasing along with the need for professionals in the tourism sector. From the results of a brief interview with one of the food vendors on Bandulu Beach, communication failures often occur when foreign tourists ask for information on traditional Betawi food available around this tourist spot. The limitations of the surrounding community to communicate in English made foreign tourists not get a satisfactory answer. This problem will have a negative impact in the form of a lack of interest in the tourist attraction, especially for foreign tourists. therefore, English for Tourism for traders in Bandulu Beach is urgent to be implemented.

Abstract

Mode, as one of elements of context, can influence speech acts. Virtual meeting, as one of modes that signifies the absence of direct interaction potentially influences the speech acts too. This study aims at identifying speech acts in the instructional practices at selected elementary schools in South Tangerang, Banten to answer (1) what types of speech acts used by teachers and students of each school and (2) what factors influence the chosen speech acts. This is a content analysis that explores communication occurrences between teachers and young learners in English classes. Three pre-schools in Pamulang district were chosen as sources of data. The data were collected by recording their communication practices in three consecutive meetings. In total, there are nine communication practices from all the pre-schools. Then, the data were transcribed and segmented by clausal units to identify types of speech acts produced by each party. The findings show that every school performs similar patterns of speech acts dominated by the use of directive expression to maintain the students’ engagement, followed by declarative expression to stimulate the students’ active participation in various activities during the virtual instructional practices.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze deixis, a pragmatic concept of linguistic reference, in Maroon 5's song "Daylight." The study utilizes descriptive qualitative methodology to analyze the deixis types in the song "Daylight," aiming to describe natural phenomena and interrelationships without theoretical constraints. The primary data source is the song's lyrics, categorized into personal, spatial, temporal, social, and discourse deixis, providing insights into the communicative and emotional impact of deixis in songwriting. The research findings reveal that the song "Daylight" by Maroon 5 effectively employs various types of deixis to establish a profound emotional connection with the audience. Personal deixis engenders intimacy, while spatial and place deixis create a vivid and relatable narrative. Temporal and time deixis evoke a sense of urgency and nostalgia, and social deixis fosters a shared emotional experience. Additionally, discourse deixis guides the audience through the unfolding events. Although the research is limited to a single song, further analysis of a diverse range of songs and audiences could provide deeper insights into deixis in music. Understanding the significance of deixis empowers songwriters to create emotionally impactful lyrics, enhancing storytelling across various artistic expressions.
