Abstract

Despite persecution of refugees being in the spotlight around the world, academics and practitioners continue to debate how to address the issue. Using a feminist lens in International Relations, this paper attempts to unpack the seemingly neutral character of forced migration governance. Supported by examples from the Asia Pacific region, this paper finds that the nature offorced migration governance is highly gendered. This can be seen from how states portray andtake actions towards refugees within ASEAN and the Bali Process, as these are the two maininstitutions governing forced migration in the region. This governance is gendered through: (1) the feminization of refugee portrayal by states’ security-focused approach, and (2) the reinforcement of states’ perceptions as the masculinist protectors translated into the securitization of migration. While this understanding seems to add more complexity to the issue, it further suggests that this state- and security-centric paradigm can be reconstructed by a rapprochement between feminist and International Relations scholars.

Abstract

Health problems related to nutritional status in children are still a global challenge, especially in developing countries, including Indonesia. Stunting is a condition where children under five experience malnutrition, which can be fatal to children's health, especially in the early days of life. West Kalimantan is one of the 12 provinces with the highest stunting cases in Indonesia in 2022, with the stunting prevalence rate at 27.8 percent. An educational activity was carried out to improve knowledge and understanding as well as community participation in stunting prevention and early detection programs in toddlers which are expected to directly motivate the community to participate in paying attention to the growth and development of their children so that their growth and development can be optimal. The target of this educational activity is parents of pre-school aged children. This service activity goes through three stages, namely the preparation stage, the implementation stage and the evaluation stage. In the preparation stage, the issue of public awareness of stunting was raised as a theme, targeting parents in Singkawang City. At the implementation stage, the service team collaborates with the Anugrah Clinic to provide socialization regarding stunting prevention to participants. At the evaluation stage, a post test was carried out to find out the extent to which the activity left impact. As a result of this service activity, it can be concluded that stunting is still an important issue or problem experienced by the people of West Kalimantan, including Singkawang. This is shown by the high prevalence of stunting and the low awareness and knowledge of the community, especially parents, about the dangers, causes and ways to prevent stunting early.

Abstract

The weaving culture is a local tradition owned by many local communities throughout Indonesia, including West Kalimantan. The culture, however, faces several challenges to its preservation due to modernization and cultural changes among younger generations. This community service program aims to preserve the weaving culture in West Kalimantan by delivering training and mentorship to a community of weaving artisans in Weaving Village Pontianak (Kanun), West Kalimantan, on the importance and skill of digitizing motifs and meanings of woven fabrics. This program is delivered by adopting the Community Development Method (CDM) consisting four stages: initiation, action planning, implementation of activities, and evaluation. From the training and mentorship activities, this program results in increasing knowledge and skills among Kanun’s youth regarding the importance of weaving tradition and digital skills to document and preserve the tradition. Therefore, it is recommended that more relevant sustainable programs are developed and integrated in the village development strategies, particularly in documenting and preserving rich histories and meanings related to the weaving tradition in Kanun. In the long term, this skill is hopefully beneficial for the archives of cultural heritage and for attracting new tourists and customers–realizing the “Tourism Village” goal for the targeted community.
