Abstract

Keywords: Prosodic Features, Vowel Sounds, Balinese Language, Tabanan Dialect, Geographical Elevation, PRAAT Geographical elevation as one of environmental elements is thought for taking part in sounds production by affecting the rate of air pressure beneath human pharyngeal cavity through the rate of atmospheric air pressure. By this, investigating the influence of geographical elevation toward prosodic features of vowel sounds in Balinese language would be the aim of this research. To reach the aim, the researcher formulated two problems that question what prosodic features differences are found among Balinese vowel sounds which are produced by Pujungan and Beraban villagers, and what influences are given by geographical elevation toward the prosodic features. The research is conducted in phonetic aspect acoustically, since acoustic tendency is the essence of verbal language as Balinese language. The research used non-experimental quantitative design, specifically causal-comparative research. The sampling process was done in two villages in Tabanan regency, which were Pujungan (high elevation region) and Beraban (low elevation region). The samples (N=30 per village) were collected by purposive sampling in which the samples should be the native of each village who should utter 13 selected swadesh words which contain all of vowel sounds in Balinese language in a natural conversation. The vowel sounds would be measured by PRAAT to find out their acoustic features as the research data which indicate the rate of their prosodic features. Further, the data were tested by T-test (α 0.05), and compared. As results, the length of entire vowel sounds which were uttered by Pujungan villagers were found to be shorter than those which were uttered by Beraban villagers. Instead, the pitch and stress of vowel sounds which were uttered by Pujungan and Beraban villagers were found to be similar statistically. By this, it could be concluded that the lower the elevation, the longer sounds would be produced. However, since the pitch and stress in Pujungan and Beraban dialects were found to be similar, the influence of geographical elevation toward them could not be confirmed accordingly.A suggestion was given for future related researches to select sampling regions which have deeper elevation gap compared to the elevation gap between Pujungan and Beraban villages for resulting more significant difference, particularly for pitch and stress classes.

Abstract

This research aims to design an effective media—Dimantra—to support blind tourism in Bali. The media is intended to help blind tourists to visualize objects and atmosphere in a tourist attraction through lingual narration in the form of audio, equipped with tactual three-dimensional miniatures of the tourist attraction. The theory used in this research was the types of narrative, especially suggestive narrative by Keraf. The method used in collecting data to create the narration audio was observation method supported by note taking technique. Meanwhile, the method used in collecting data related to the effectiveness of Dimantra was interview method supported by closed questionnaire. The results showed that the effective narrative formulation in building visual sensations for blind people was general-specific narrative supported by informative, communicative, and detailed sentences in terms of positions, distances (measurements), directions, textures, and colors. Meanwhile, the effective materials to create proper three-dimensional miniature were newspapers covered with real or semi-real materials such as soft sands to convey beach, hard sands to form rocks, and wet cottons to convey water. Further, Dimantra was considered to be effective in helping blind people to visualize tourist attraction based on the percentage of samples’ responses, namely 53% strongly agree that Dimantra was effective, 37% agree, 5% neutral, and 0% disagree or strongly disagree.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the phonological variations of the Balinese language in Tabanan Regency and to map them. Observations were made in four villages, namely Bongan, Berembeng, Sanda, and Wangaya Gede. Data were collected by using interview and observation methods. The data are swadesh words spoken by the informants during the interview. The results obtained were that the phoneme /ə/ in the final open position has two realizations, namely [a] and [ə]. Each sound has a different area. [ə] found at the observation point 1,2,4 and [a] found at the observation point 3. The phoneme /e/ at the open end position has two variations, namely [e] and [ε], while the phoneme /o/ realized by [o] and [ɔ]. [e] and [o] were found at the observation point 1,2 4, while [ε ] and [ɔ] were found in TP 3. In addition, there was also difference in the realization of the /k/ consonant phoneme. The phoneme /k/ is realized by [k] and [?]. [k] was used in TP3, while [?] used in TP 1,2,4. In TP 1,2,4 there was not phoneme /a/ in the final distribution, while TP 3 has a complete /a/ distribution. Areas that have a complete phoneme /a/ distribution, [ə] would not be found in the final distribution. In areas where the phoneme /a/ has incomplete distribution, [ə] has a complete distribution there. [k] in the final distribution was unknown at TP3, but known in TP 1,2,4. Meanwhile [?] in the final distribution was known merely in TP 1,2,4 but not in TP 3. Keywords: phoneme; consonant; vowel; Dialectology

Abstract

The article aimed at investigating and mapping the semantic structures and roles of English verb belonging to the concept of cutting. The data were collected from both English articles and videos by combining comprehending and note taking methods. The collected data were analyzed by applying the Theory of Natural Semantic Metalanguage and Semantic Macro Role. The results showed that there were 11 lexicons (slice, mince, dice, julienne, chiffonade, fillet, trim, clip, snip, mow, and hew) reffering to the cutting concept, which were varied based on the aim, the instrument, the method, the entity and the result of which the cutting concept was implemented. Further, English cutting verb was uncovered to merge some arguments which were agent, patient, theme, instrument, benefactive, source, time, and location.

Abstract

This research is intended as a pilot study to find out the implications of the dysarthria of the phoneme /r/ trill on the quality of other consonant phonemes produced at the same place of articulation. This study was designed using a descriptive quantitative-qualitative approach with field methods. In collecting data, the observation method was used to collect data in the form of consonant and vowel phonemes produced by 4 dysarthria samples and 4 non- dysarthria samples. The collected data were then analyzed using extralingual and intralingual comparison methods. The results of the study show that if the place of articulation where a sound is produced has a problem, then the problem will affect all the sounds produced in that place. The hard production of the alveolar trill /r/ phoneme in dysarthria sufferers has implications for the production of other alveolar sounds, namely /t/ and /d/ which become weaker and more nasal.
