Abstract

Audiovisual research is not only limited to an analysis of the translation applied to movies, but also about the meaning and how the aspects of that meaning can be well understood by the audience. The meaning of the movie refers to the verbal meaning and nonverbal meaning to see how the meaning of the movie is conveyed to the audience as a whole because verbal and nonverbal language basically has its own uniqueness in the process of conveying meaning. This study also aims to analyze the storyline to obtain the unity of verbal and nonverbal meanings in building the overall story in the movie. The research data chosen was the animated children’s movie “Rabbids Invansion” because it contains nonverbal signs which tend to be more than verbal language. Although there is verbal language, what appears refers to verbal language that is unknown or difficult to understand the meaning directly. The power of imagination in movie “Rabbids Invansion” is very strong. Therefore, the study of meaning in this movie becomes a very interesting and need to be analyzed in details. This research begins by listening to the movie, followed by collection data through screen recording techniques for data collection of visual or image aspects and taking a note for verbal language. The results of this study could later be useful for audiovisual researchers in producing a study in the field of meaning of children’s animated movie.  Keywords: meaning, movie, image, verbal, nonverbal, plot.

Abstract

This research investigated the translation strategies used to translate Indonesian food menus into English at 5-star hotel restaurants in Bali. It also explored the use of cultural-specific items (CSIs) in these translations. The study employed a qualitative research method, gathering data from the official websites of six different 5-star restaurants in Bali. The primary theoretical framework was Beekman and Callow's "Lexical Equivalence When Things or Events Are Unknown in the Receptor Language" (1974). Additionally, Tang Yingmin's (1981) theory on Cultural-Specific Items (CSIs) was applied to identify and categorize the types of CSIs found in the translations. The findings indicated that the most frequently used translation approach was Equivalence by Modifying a Generic Word, followed by Equivalence by Cultural Substitution and Equivalence by Using a Loan Word. Among the CSIs, ingredients were the most commonly represented category, accounting for 35% of the total. Furthermore, the data revealed that translators not only translated the names of main dishes but also provided additional details about side dishes.

Abstract

This research focusses on translators working with languages that have diverse promotional language systems and cultures. The study is based on the modulation theory given by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995). This research intends to highlight the changes in point of view produced by translators in translating texts from English into Indonesian. The data source of this study is Garuda Indonesia magazine, which is presented in English as well as its Indonesian translation. The research indicates that translators change their perspective based on various factors to produce a target language that is equivalent to the source language while retaining the original meaning. The changes include a) abstract for concrete, b) explicative modulation, c) the part for the whole, d) one part for another, e) reversal of terms, f) negation of opposite, g) active to passive, h) exchange of intervals for limits. The change in perspective creates a cultural bridge in translation involving different languages and cultures.

Abstract

This research is intended as a pilot study to find out the implications of the dysarthria of the phoneme /r/ trill on the quality of other consonant phonemes produced at the same place of articulation. This study was designed using a descriptive quantitative-qualitative approach with field methods. In collecting data, the observation method was used to collect data in the form of consonant and vowel phonemes produced by 4 dysarthria samples and 4 non- dysarthria samples. The collected data were then analyzed using extralingual and intralingual comparison methods. The results of the study show that if the place of articulation where a sound is produced has a problem, then the problem will affect all the sounds produced in that place. The hard production of the alveolar trill /r/ phoneme in dysarthria sufferers has implications for the production of other alveolar sounds, namely /t/ and /d/ which become weaker and more nasal. Keywords: dysarthria; acoustic features; /r/ trill phoneme
