Abstract

This paper presents the discussion on the impact of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to English language teachers’ decision and performance in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching. This study carried out a multiple study on two different teachers from different institutional and academic status background in Indonesia. Interviews were carried out to the participant to obtain deeper information concerning their experience in different types of CPD, and how it could influence the way they perceive ICT usefulness and enhance their teaching performance. The result of this study is expected to provide practical contributions particularly to the policy makers to improve teachers’ competences by designing appropriate curriculum and CPD in accordance with the teachers’ need in the digital era. The result of study indicated that both teachers tended to develop their TPACK (Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge) competences from informal CPD they had from informal co-learning with colleagues and informal network learning from online resources. They also pointed out that governments provided teachers with online-based training that they could access to governments’ official websites.

Abstract

This paper reported the result of a seminar to develop students’ awareness of the use of technology in their learning process. The seminar also discussed their challenges in the use of technology for learning and how they dealt with it. The seminar highlighted the importance of good digital literacy for students, especially how they should use it to support learning in appropriate ways. The seminar was carried out by having presentation and participants’ questions-answers for discussion. It was indicated in the seminar that students felt technology made their learning easier, especially in terms of the access to resources. Nevertheless, the ease also became challenges as it gave them opportunity to perform cheating and distract them in learning.

Abstract

This research explores how a teacher’s literacy practices, through a digital storytelling project, foster critical thinking and collaboration among students. It also examines students' experiences during literacy activities and the project itself. Conducted as a qualitative case study, this research involved thirty-six senior high school students. Data were gathered through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation of students’ project artifacts. The findings suggest that using reading journals during self-directed reading at home promotes critical thinking and assists students in generating ideas for their digital storytelling projects. Besides, digital storytelling projects also play a key role in enhancing students’ critical thinking and collaboration skills. Students effectively articulated issues and proposed solutions within their stories. Some topics related to the environments chosen cover air pollution, water pollution, building/housing, and illegal logging. Participation in the collaborative project encouraged students to take responsibility for their contributions and to respect differing opinions within their teams. Exploring students’ views as their reflection on experiencing literacy practices in digital storytelling projects also reveals the positive impacts on their English ability. This approach provides educators with a practical and innovative strategy to foster students’ skills, i.e. critical thinking and collaboration in the 21st century in an educational context.

Abstract

The phenomenon of toxic friendship is increasingly prevalent in school environments, particularly among junior high school students who are in the stage of identity exploration. Friendships, which ideally serve as spaces for emotional support, often develop into interactions characterized by pressure, manipulation, and negative behaviors. This study aims to explore the patterns of addressing toxic friendship at SMPT Darul Dakwah, focusing on three aspects: (1) the forms or characteristics of toxic friendship among students, (2) the contributing factors, and (3) the role of Islamic Education (PAI) teachers in managing these issues. Employing a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving eighth-grade students, PAI teachers, and guidance counselors (BK teachers). The findings reveal that toxic friendship manifests in forms such as group exclusivity (cliques), social exclusion, verbal bullying, and emotional manipulation. The contributing factors include family parenting patterns, peer group influence, and the intensity of social media use. PAI teachers implement preventive strategies (instilling religious values), curative approaches (Islamic counseling), and rehabilitative efforts (fostering respect and positive cooperation). These findings highlight the strategic role of PAI teachers in cultivating healthy peer relationships and recommend stronger collaboration with guidance counselors and the school to prevent and address toxic friendship.

Abstract

This study explores examples of moral role models experienced by students at MTsN 2 Mojokerto in the current digital era. The moral role models in question refer to the influence of public figures' behavior on social media on students' character. The method used was a qualitative approach with phenomenology. The research subjects consisted of 15 students and two Akidah Akhlak teachers, selected through purposive sampling. Students were chosen as informants because they frequently use social media, which allows them to follow public figures and are able to convey their views and experiences well verbally. Akidah Akhlak teachers were chosen because they play a direct role in shaping character and instilling moral values in the madrasah environment. The results of the study show that moral development occurs through three stages: accessing digital content, absorbing moral messages, and imitating attitudes. Students view virtual figures as modern role models, while teachers function as guides through positive content recommendations, class discussions, and limiting cell phone use. Social media has varying impacts on students' morals, depending on how well they imitate and understand. The novelty of this research lies in its focus on the phenomenon of virtual role models in madrasah environments, as well as its analysis of the relationship between the influence of digital role models and the educational methods teachers employ in shaping Islamic morals in the age of social media. This research contributes to designing moral education strategies in the digital era that are relevant and appropriate to the challenges students face.
