Abstract

The issues regarding the demands of creative, innovative, and professional teachers are certainly on the concern of stakeholders and practitioners in education. Substantial efforts were conducted by the government to meet the 21st-century teachers having the four competencies required for being a teacher and coping with the needs of modern education. A survey research was conducted to collect respondents’ opinion as the main source of data to describe whether the 21st-century teachers are on the demands and to gain information that the students have a similar perception to teacher’s competencies required by the government. Seventy-five questionnaires related to the competencies were given to students of English Education Study Program of 2013 to 2016. The questionnaires were aimed at collecting written information dealing with what the students perceived towards the activities implemented by teachers in the process of teaching and learning. The result of questionnaire analysis revealed that most students expected the 21st-century teachers to have skills in teaching and in connecting it with the development of today’s technology and today’s student characteristics. The data also showed that the students constructed the same characteristics of teacher’s competencies required by the government regarding pedagogy, personality, sociality, and professionality.

Abstract

In the last decades, we have witnessed a revolutionary spread of English worldwide. This global spread of English can be attributed to the combination of various historical, political, economic, cultural, and technological factors. This led to the emergence of new varieties of English, multiple linguistic and cultural identities. However, for decades, the Western paradigm of English language teaching has occupied a prestigious position in Asia, including Indonesia. This paradigm neglects the emerging varieties of English. Furthermore, it is important to recognize that language teaching and learning is affected by a host of factors ranging from the macro political and cultural environments of a country or region to the micro perceptions and practices of individual teachers or learners, which calls for different methodologies for different learners or learning situations. This article attempts to discuss briefly the current issues in English language teaching (ELT) in Indonesia from English as lingua franca (ELF) perspectives, particularly by taking a close look at all the local features and limitations in the established theories and practices in ELT in Indonesia. Keywords: English language teaching, contextual, methodology, EFL

Abstract

This research article provides an examination of the challenges faced by students during the composition of procedure texts. It aims to uncover factors influencing students' proficiency. Utilizing thematic analysis, we analyzed students' written texts and conducted interviews with junior high school English teachers and students, providing a holistic perspective.  Four significant areas of difficulty were identified: minimal word and phrase variations, lack of clarity and precision, ignorance of writing mechanisms, and challenges with grammar and spelling. These challenges provided insights into the recurring patterns of students’ writing. Factors contributing to these difficulties included motivational factors, language environment, language proficiency, and formal presentation aspects. Student motivation to write and seek comments was hindered by low intrinsic motivation. Students' writing talents were also shaped by language exposure and proficiency, which varied by background and experience. Additionally, formal presentation characteristics and technology-based teaching strategy restrictions underlined the need for improved infrastructure to accommodate various and engaging teaching methods. In conclusion, the research sheds light on the intricate landscape of students' struggles in composing texts and underscores the urgency of providing tailored teaching strategies to address these challenges effectively while also keeping the influencing factors in consideration.

Abstract

This paper presents the discussion on the impact of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to English language teachers’ decision and performance in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching. This study carried out a multiple study on two different teachers from different institutional and academic status background in Indonesia. Interviews were carried out to the participant to obtain deeper information concerning their experience in different types of CPD, and how it could influence the way they perceive ICT usefulness and enhance their teaching performance. The result of this study is expected to provide practical contributions particularly to the policy makers to improve teachers’ competences by designing appropriate curriculum and CPD in accordance with the teachers’ need in the digital era. The result of study indicated that both teachers tended to develop their TPACK (Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge) competences from informal CPD they had from informal co-learning with colleagues and informal network learning from online resources. They also pointed out that governments provided teachers with online-based training that they could access to governments’ official websites.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the conversations between Mr. Hundert and Sedgewick Bell in The Emperor’s Club through a qualitative case study with genre-based discourse analysis, grounded in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics. By employing techniques such as framing, foregrounding, backgrounding, and presupposition, the study reveals how linguistic choices reinforce ideological conflicts between moral idealism and pragmatic ambition. The findings suggest that these ideological tensions reflect broader dilemmas in character education, especially relevant to Indonesia’s Kurikulum Merdeka and the Pancasila Student Profile. The study has implications for literature-based pedagogy and ethical development in classroom settings.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by EFL students in translating cooking recipes. It was conducted on sixth-semester students from class B in the translation course. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with thematic analysis to identify and interpret key patterns within the data. Data collection was carried out through a triangulation approach, combining mixed-method questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed four main themes and one additional theme related to the students’ difficulties: (1) vocabulary-related challenges, (2) grammar and equivalence issues, (3) translation quality and self-confidence, (4) limited exposure and cultural context, and (5) translation methods and procedures as an additional theme. These challenges reflect the complexity of translating procedural texts, especially recipes, which often include culturally bound terms, specific measurements, and imperative instructions. The study concludes that translating recipes presents significant linguistic and contextual challenges for EFL students. It suggests the need for more targeted strategies and exposure to authentic materials in translation to help students improve their translation and overcome practical difficulties in translating specialized texts like recipes.

Abstract

This study investigates cognitive approaches to Second Language Acquisition (SLA) by examining key components: attention, working memory, L1 transfer, and cognitive restructuring. Despite extensive research on individual cognitive factors in SLA, there remains a critical gap in understanding how these elements interact systemically in multilingual contexts, particularly in Indonesian EFL classrooms where traditional teaching methods often neglect cognitive principles. This study aims to develop an integrated cognitive model of SLA and propose practical pedagogical strategies tailored to Indonesia’s unique multilingual environment. A systematic review is conducted using the SALSA framework (Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, and Analysis), incorporating NVivo 12-assisted thematic analysis of ten peer-reviewed studies published between 2018 and 2023. The methodology follows PRISMA 2020 guidelines for transparent study selection and applies qualitative analysis to identify patterns across diverse cognitive studies. The findings reveal that attention serves as a gateway for input processing and learning, while working memory determines learners’ capacity to handle linguistic information. Additionally, L1 transfer either facilitates or hinders L2 learning depending on language distance and learner awareness. Cognitive restructuring enables proceduralization of explicit knowledge. In the Indonesian EFL context, these mechanisms are especially relevant. This study suggests cognitively informed instruction to enhance learning outcomes.

Abstract

Improving the quality of human resources in rural areas is a significant challenge in achieving equal education in Indonesia, particularly in areas such as Tumbang Nusa Village, Jabiren Raya District, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan. Low awareness of the importance of education and limited access to English language learning are factors that hinder the development of the younger generation's potential. This community service activity aims to increase the awareness and basic English language skills through a participatory and contextual approach based on the school community. The implementation method includes interactive training, song-based and visual learning, and joint reflection, face-to-face at partner schools. The results of the activity demonstrated high enthusiasm among participants, active engagement in the learning process, and increased motivation to learn English. This activity also strengthened collaboration between the community service team, the village, and the school as local partners. This activity suggests that the contextual and communicative approach is effective in developing learning awareness and language skills among students living in rural areas.
