Abstract

Cercospora sp. is a fungus that causes leaf spot disease in oil palm plants, potentially affecting productivity and harming oil palm cultivation. Long-term use of synthetic fungicides can lead to resistance, resurgence, and leave harmful residues in the environment. As an alternative solution, the utilization of liquid smoke from rambutan wood offers a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and antifungal option to inhibit the growth of leaf spot disease. This study aims to determine the effective concentration of rambutan wood liquid smoke in inhibiting the growth of Cercospora sp. Vitro. The research was conducted from December to March 2024 at the Laboratory of Pathology, Entomology, Microbiology, and Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Sultan Syarif Kasim State Islamic University Riau. The experimental method used was a completely randomized design with six treatments (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%), each repeated four times, resulting in 24 experimental units. Observed parameters included total phenol content analysis of liquid smoke, macroscopic observations, growth rate (cm/day), and inhibition rate (%) of Cercospora sp. The results showed a total phenol content of 1.76%. Liquid smoke from rambutan wood at a concentration of 2% was highly effective in inhibiting the growth of Cercospora sp., completely stopping the growth rate to 0 cm/day and categorizing it as a highly effective fungicide with an effectiveness percentage of 100%.

Abstract

Leaf blight is one of the main diseases in oil palm nurseries, as a result of the attack of the pathogen Colletotrichum sp. The initial symptoms are found on the edges of the leaves. Colletotrichum sp. is a pathogenic fungus that causes blight in oil palm, so it needs to be controlled. One of the alternative controls is by using rambutan wood liquid smoke. This study aims to obtain an effective concentration of rambutan wood liquid smoke that can inhibit the growth of Colletotrichum sp. in vitro. This research was carried out from November 2023 to January 2024 at the Laboratory of Pathology, Entomology, Microbiology and Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Sultan Syarif Kasim State Islamic University, Riau. This study used an experimental method with a complete randomized design (RAL) with 6 treatments (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%) with each treatment repeated 4 times, so that there were 24 experimental units. Observation parameters include total phenol analysis and PH test of liquid smoke, macroscopic, growth rate (cm/day) and inhibition (%) Colletotrichum sp. The results showed a total phenol content of 3.47% and a PH test. Rambutan wood liquid smoke with a concentration of 4% is very effective in inhibiting Colletotrichum sp. 100% inhibition and growth rate of 0 cm/day.

Abstract

Biochar with a high organic matter composition is considered to be an ameliorant for Ultisol. Providing biochar as an ameliorant needs to be studied because it will cause an increase in micronutrients, most of which are excessive in Ultisol. This study aims to determine the effect of several levels of biochar dosage from corn cob as a base material on changes in micronutrients in Ultisol soil. This research was conducted in a greenhouse and in the Laboratory of Agrostology, Feed Industry and Soil Science, State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. Experiments with several doses of biochar as treatment, e.g., 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of the composition of the growing media were arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six replications. The parameters observed were the micronutrient content of Boron (B), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe) and Aluminum (Al). The experimental results showed that giving corn cob biochar with doses of 0.5%, 10% and 15% did not significantly change the levels of B, Cu and Zn Ultisol. Biochar at a dose of 10% significantly increased the soil Zn content and decreased Al-dd Ultisol solubility.

Abstract

Ryvarden and Curvularia sp. are pathogenic fungi that attack oil palm plants and cause significant losses, thus requiring effective control measures. Liquid smoke derived from teak wood powder contains phenolic compounds that can inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungi. This study aimed to determine the most effective dosage of teak wood waste liquid smoke in inhibiting the growth of Ganoderma orbiforme (Fr.) Ryvarden and Curvularia sp. The research was conducted from February to March 2025 at the Laboratory of Plant Pathology, Entomology, Microbiology, and Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Science, Sultan Syarif Kasim State Islamic University Riau. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used with four treatments: control, 1,5%, 2%, and 2,5%, with four replications for each pathogen, resulting in 32 experimental units. The observed parameters were fungal colony diameter, percentage of fungal growth inhibition by liquid smoke, and antifungal index. The results of this study indicated that the application of liquid smoke derived from teak wood dust at a consentration of 2,5% per Petri dish was the most effective in inhibiting the growth of Ganoderma orbiforme (Fr). Ryvarden, showing a colony diameter growth of 2,04 cm, a growth rate 0,11 cm/day, and achieving the highest antifungal index of 56%.The application of liquid smoke derived from teak wood dust at a consentration of 2,5% per Petri dish was also the most effective in inhibiting the growth of Curvularia sp., resulting in a colony diameter growth of 2.56 cm, a growth rate 0,14 cm/day, and an antifungal index of 65%.
