Abstract

The media ecosystem in Indonesia still does not provide a safe space for marginalized religious groups. Information on marginal religious groups is commodified so that these groups are only used as objects, not news subjects who can tell their point of view. Serikat Jurnalis Untuk Keberagaman (Sejuk) seeks to combat this hegemony by advocating journalists regarding coverage of marginalized religious groups. The theory used is the Counter Hegemony Theory and the Concept of Disinformation Capitalism. The research method was descriptive qualitative with a single case study type. Data collection techniques were carried out using semi-structured interviews and the use of literature. the analysis and validity of the data in this study used triangulation techniques. the analysis was performed by data reduction and data grouping to conclude. The result of the research was that the commodification of information occurred because positive information on reporting of marginal religious groups does not generate profits, so that information is limited and not reported. The information, in this case, is political and inaccurate, which means that positive information related to the harmonious practices of marginal religious groups is overshadowed by information related to conflicts and threats against these groups. Sejuk's efforts as an organic intellectual group against media hegemony has changed the perspective of journalists in covering marginal religious groups. Journalists, who have been in contact with and received Sejuk training might write stories that do not stigmatize this group. Even so, there are challenges in the practice of Sejuk, namely the resistance to Sejuk is quite large due to increasingly intense advocacy.

Abstract

The main problem in families in which there are Deaf parents and Hearing children is the problem of communication, both verbally and in sign language. Hearing children with Deaf parents are able to communicate in two ways, either verbally with non-Deaf people or using sign language with Deaf people. Communication between children and Deaf parents is an important problem in their social and emotional development. This study aims to determine the communication problems that arise between children and Deaf parents. The main focus is to explore the obstacles experienced by children in understanding and conveying messages from their parents who have hearing impairments. This study uses  the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. Researchers found 127 Scopus articles in a search using Science Direct and with the help of Mendeley and VOSViewer which were  then filtered into 18 articles to be analyzed descriptively. The findings show that lack of communication should not be a reason why Deaf parents cannot have access or information about their children. And appreciate that hearing children or Children of Deaf Adults or CODA have different ways of communicating with Deaf parents, the Deaf community and the hearing or non-Deaf community.

Abstract

Background: Covid-19 hit almost all sectors of life, including the economy, tourism, and hospitals. Long queues of patients in the waiting rooms, mandatory use of personal protective equipment, layered masks, maintaining distance in interaction, and use of medical terms in requesting messages to patients are the barriers for medical personnel, especially nurses, in communication with patients. Purpose: The current study examined how hospital public relation helps overcome communication barriers between nurses and patients. The study was conducted at PKU Muhamadiyah Hospital Surakarta, accredited with 6-star KARS as a provincial referral hospital for COVID-19 patients and has the highest patient occupancy in Surakarta. Methods: It is a descriptive qualitative study. Conclusion: By using Dozier and Broom’s theory regarding the role of PR, this study proved that PR successfully helps overcome internal communication barriers experienced by nurses and patients. It plays as an expert advisor by providing input to hospital management and bridging the communication between nurses and patients. PR also acts as a problem solver by providing training on communicating correctly. Implications: Communication barriers can be overcome if nurses have good communication skills and understanding. As a support for the hospital system, PR provides regular communication training for nurses struggling to serve patients during the covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Indigenous peoples take advantage of land/forest to fulfill their needs. However, in North Kalimantan, the forest functions are increasingly shifting because corporations intend to manage forest areas that reach 69% of the province’s total area, among others, for oil palm plantations. The development of oil palm plantations in North Kalimantan is supported by investments, especially from foreign countries, such as Singapore and Malaysia. Investment funds will influence the progress of oil palm plantations. Although some indigenous peoples have received legal regulations to recognize and protect rights, they still face some impacts, including climate change, environmental pollution, land grabbing, and criminalization. In this case, community resilience is one of the essential capabilities that indigenous peoples must possess, including in North Kalimantan. Indigenous peoples also need various capabilities to anticipate, reduce the impact, and overcome the consequences of corporate development in oil palm plantations. Thus, this article aims to analyze the resilience of indigenous peoples in North Kalimantan in facing investment pressures in oil palm plantations through document review in relevant sources and in-depth interviews with several stakeholders related to indigenous peoples in North Kalimantan. In addition, some previous research has not focused on the resilience of indigenous peoples in North Kalimantan in anticipating or dealing with investment developments that are detrimental to them. The results showed that indigenous people in North Kalimantan had performed resilience by mapping customary lands/territories, monitoring, reporting, and land certificates following legal regulations. Some indigenous people had also referred to the customary law through customary courts, imposing customary sanctions on their members and companies that did not comply with customary norms. Moreover, traditional leaders and institutions have shown an essential role in protecting forests and being the pioneers of agroecology-based economic development

Abstract

Using internet memes as a marketing tool is one strategy that every company can apply to market their products and reach their consumers in the current digital era. The aim of this research is to analyze the construction of meme messages and explain the function of using these memes in marketing on Netflixid and Vidiodotcom’s Instagram accounts. This research uses the concepts of content marketing and internet memes as a reference for analysis. The method used in this research is qualitative content analysis. A total of 25 uploads from each @netflixid and @vidiodotcom were analyzed using the meme dimension analysis model, including content, form, and stance. Based on the content analysis of dimensions in memes, the form dimension shows the most differences. Meme creators at each company take snippets of films, dramas, and series that are their own products. In terms of shape dimensions, there has been a change from what was originally a video format to a photo. The narrative built on memes is also different from the narrative in the original source. Apart from that, there are differences in the function of each meme in the two companies. On Netflixid Instagram account, memes are used to build relationships using the soft selling method. Meanwhile, Vidiodotcom’s Instagram account shows how memes are designed with the aim of building consumer relationships using soft selling and hard selling method.
