Abstract

In early 2020, the world was shocked by the outbreak of the corona virus (covid 19) that emerged in Wuhan, China and quickly spread to the rest of the world, including Indonesia. The pandemic that occurred in Indonesia tested citizens who are known to be multicultural with religion, language, culture, religion, ethnicity and race from the aspect of spirituality (divinity) and social (humanity), because covid 19 does not look at social and religious strata. Therefore, it is necessary to read religious moderation as a discourse in multicultural life in Indonesia as a mainstream in growing spirituality and social life. This article is a qualitative literature study with techniques for collecting data from several sources such as online news, journal articles and phenomena related to religious issues and COVID-19 which are analyzed with Islamic theological theory and sociology, to get a comprehensive reading of moderation. religion during a pandemic. First, theologically it is believed that God is the center of the cosmos which is to grow faith with the representation of the Spirit and can interpret theology inclusively. Second, in the context of Indonesia, it is sociologically aware that the spread of religion is not carried out by means of violence and that religion and culture act as social capital.

Abstract

The narratives of peace, humanity, and religious freedom have become central to public discourse, particularly in promoting inclusive Islamic theology within Muslim communities across ASEAN countries, e.g. Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. This discourse unfolds in various public spaces: government institutions, religious organizations, educational settings, and places of worship. It reflects a dynamic religious contestation, driven by organic intellectuals who engage through institutional channels and humanistic awareness. This article seeks to explore the religious discourse surrounding the productive contestation of inclusive Islamic theology and to analyze how this discourse is disseminated among Muslim scholars in Southeast Asia. A qualitative research method was employed, involving observations and interviews with influential Muslim scholars from academic, governmental, and religious organizations. The focus was on understanding how individuals are shaped by the policies and ideas they advocate. Interviews provided insights from academics and religious activists (referred to as Muslim scholars) on the issue of inclusive Islamic theology. The analysis draws on contestation theory to examine the arena of religious narratives in the public sphere. Findings indicate that the discourse surrounding inclusive Islamic theology in Southeast Asia varies by country, with each nation adapting it to its unique cultural and social landscape. In Indonesia, for example, the discourse is often more inclusive and culturally grounded, while in other countries, it may take a more structural approach. Despite these variations, Southeast Asian Muslim scholars broadly agree on the importance of promoting inclusive Islamic theology drawing upon religious teachings, state policies, and societal characteristics as key considerations.

Abstract

The issue of religious moderation is a government programme aimed at countering narratives, attitudes, and actions of intolerance. However, this programme is not widely disseminated in communities such as Islamic boarding schools. Activities carried out at the Jekulo Kudus Islamic Boarding School aim to empower students to promote religious moderation and tolerance. The aim is to reveal the lack of study of the works of Indonesian scholars in various Islamic boarding schools, while the works of Middle Eastern scholars still dominate. The method used is PAR, which directly involves students in studying the book Risalah Tawhid by Mbah Hasyim Asy'ari and the book Faidhul Rahman by Mbah Shaleh Darat. The findings indicate that students remain unfamiliar with Indonesian scholars, possess minimal knowledge about the moderate teachings of Nusantara scholars, and have a partial understanding of the teachings of religious moderation, both from the ministry and from religious perspectives. This article contributes to illustrating that santri need to be introduced to and taught the works of Nusantara scholars.
