Abstract

How Australian children perceived the image of Indigenous from their readings is highly influenced by the authors. As many Australian children’s books are written by White authors, it is important to reveal whether their past and cultural background manifest in the image they built for Indigeneity. This study aims to reveal how Jackie French, a white Australian children’s book author, portrayed Indigenous characters and environment in her novels and to find out whether French creates a shift of the images as a form of her tendency to the major culture in Australia. The data were significant textual units from Nanberry Black Brother White novel and were analyzed using Bradford's post-colonial theory of unsettling narrative. The result of this study shows that French deliver a varying degree of Eurocentric mindset in portraying indigenous characters and characterization. It implies that French, as a White-Australian writer still possibly has a colonial mentality who, deliberately or not, positions the Indigenous characters as Others through the focalization of both Non-Indigenous and Indigenous characters themselves. For instance, in Nanberry Black Brother White, it appears that French try to justify whiteness as more civilized and a better race through Nanberry’s point of view as an Indigenous child character. It implies that the process of depicting Nanberry, the representation of Aborigines, in the novel is actually a justification for establishing an Eurocentric mindset through the character’s narratives, and therefore creates unsettling narratives.

Abstract

As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, public schools have been obliged to switch from face-to-face instruction to online or distance learning only. Teachers may have a more challenging time dealing with the pandemic since they are used to working offline and now must do so online. This study aims to determine how EFL students perceive instructor responsibilities in an online learning environment, and the study's difficulty is how these students perceive teacher roles. The Scale of Teacher Role Inventory (STRI), a tool established by Huang, is utilized to gather data for this study. Student feedback on their work, emotional support, and classroom management were all useful in the results from the three sections. To complete this study question's data, English language education students from a Yogyakarta university were requested to answer 27 questions. Each portion of the questionnaire had varied findings, although the values were comparable. In the cognitive role component, students appreciated lecturers' comments or feedback on their work (M=4.58 SD=0.64), but practice question advice earned the lowest score (M=4.34 SD=0.73). In terms of emotion, the lecturer has offered good help, with the best score received when the lecturer encouraged students to explore their answers and results (M = 4.32, SD = 0.72) and the lowest score gained when the lecturer made learning stressful (M = 3.29, SD = 1.32). This component is the lowest, but the computation is reversed, showing that students are not under pressure from lecturers. Students believed the lecturer crafted a good semester-long course plan (M=4.52, SD=0.61). Students considered lecturers lacked control over learning rate hence this assessment utilized the lowest possible score (M = 4.15, SD = 0.85).

Abstract

This study aims to identify the representation of gender in Indonesian government-endorsed English textbooks Specifically, the representation of gender in the textbook was essential because it depicted how society treats gender in a certain region. This study is based on a content-analysis investigation of gender representation in When English Rings the Bell SMP/MTs Kelas VII that the Indonesian government endorsed under the ministry of education. The whole data was collected through the instrument and was specified based on the need for gender representation that was made by Porrecca and was analyzed using Krippendorf's framework. This study reveals that man's representation was depicted as a strong character by depicting man as an outdoor worker with more choices of type of work. The woman's representation is depicted as a domestic worker, such as a chore. In addition, the male gender is represented as a masculine character, which is associated with types of nouns that were frequently associated with strength, wildness, and activeness, while the female gender was presented with typical nouns that were associated with beauty and passivity. The study still needs more exploration with other approaches to discover how gender is represented in the textbook.

Abstract

Mastering English in an academic context is prominent in preparing university students for global competition, and therefore, awareness of academic self-efficacy toward language skills is needed to learn English correctly and effectively. This study aims to examine the academic self-efficacy of students from the International Program who took the Bridging Program Course. To collect the data, the researcher distributed a questionnaire by Djokic (2021) that was adapted from Owen and Froman's (1988) College Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (CASES). The data show that students from the Bridging Program course have the highest efficacy when it comes to attending the lectures. However, they have the lowest efficacy in their note-taking skill and their ability to answer questions from the professors. The result implied that students were more confident in doing a routine activity as they were accustomed to it and felt less confident when they had to respond to lecturers as it required their readiness to learn.

Abstract

Although Problem-Based Learning has been frequently explored in higher education, little is known about how it is implemented in English teaching practicum preparation context. To fill this practical gap, this article discusses the implementation of Problem-Based Learning in a microteaching class to prepare EFL pre-service teachers for teaching practicum in schools with various conditions. This article elaborates how students critically identified and found solution to the authentic problems posed at the beginning of every practicum cycle. This problem-solving process not only developed pre-service teachers’ critical thinking but also raised their awareness of the importance of being an adaptive teacher.

Abstract

Similar minor positions between women and nature inspired the emergence of ecofeminism theory, which is suitable for analyzing literary works, including children's literature. This research investigates the issue of how women and nature spiritually empower one another in a children's book entitled Bridge to Terabithia. This paper aims to analyze the harmony of the female figure with the surrounding nature and its impact on gender and class equality. The result of re-reading and analyzing the novel from the perspective of ecofeminism shows that the characters' struggle against social class oppression and gender stereotypes manifested through their escapism to nature. The main female character's courage in rejecting gender stereotypes made the relationship between humans and nature egalitarian. This novel presents nature as the Terabithia Kingdom. The Terabithia Kingdom is where the main characters can escape from all oppressions they experienced in social life.

Abstract

Post-pandemic learning has led schools in Indonesia to conduct a teaching transition from online to hybrid to offline learning. This uncertain situation has forced pre-service English teachers (PSETs), to be able to adapt to any mode of classrooms. Moreover, PSETs must have the social presence ability to manage online, offline, or hybrid classrooms. However, few studies examined how problem-based learning (PBL) can facilitate the establishment of social presence in classroom management practices among PSETs. This study investigates how PBL can establish PSETs"™ social presence. This convergent mixed-method study compares the social presence before and after the PBL implementation. Eighty PSETs joining the Language Classroom Management course completed a social presence questionnaire before and after the course. One open-ended question about their strategies to maintain students"™ engagement was added to the questionnaire. The result showed that the social presence score after the course (M=42.31) was significantly higher than before the course (M=40.80). It was also revealed that after the course, PSETs emphasized how teachers should also build relationships with students and ensure students"™ sense of belonging in the classroom. From these findings, the PSETs"™ social presence has been established through PBL implementation. While PBL supports teacher education and fosters social presence, further research should explore its integration. How to cite this paper: Murtafi"™ah, B. Ardini, A. S. (2024). Abstract
