Abstract

The problem statement of this research was what are students’ perception about the English learning at SMA Negeri 3 Lakudo. The objective of this research was to determine students’ perception about the English learning at SMA Negeri 3 Lakudo. This research used the qualitative research design. The subject of this research was the class XI.IPA SMA Negeri 3 Lakudo in the academic year 2022/2023. The data was obtained by observation and interview then was analyzed by the researcher with three steps; data reduction, data display, and draw conclusion or verification. This research found that students’ perception about the English learning at SMA Negeri 3 Lakudo. Those were that students unpleasant feeling, students were not interested, students often feel bored in learning English and students often felt lazy in learning English.

Abstract

This study examines the involvement of the Sea-Gypsies tribe in their children’s English education and the factors influencing their participation. The research is guided by two questions: "To what extent are the Sea-Gypsies involved in their children’s English education?" and "What motivates or discourages parents from participating in their children’s English education?" Employing a qualitative microethnographic design, the study was conducted in the Samabahari Village, Wakatobi Regency, a rural and underdeveloped area in Indonesia. The study involved 45 participants, including 20 students, 24 parents, and one English teacher. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews, observations, documents, and visual materials. The data analysis process encompassed familiarization with the data, creating initial codes, collating codes, grouping codes into themes, reviewing and revising themes, and narrating the findings. The results indicate that most parents support their children’s English learning. This support is rooted in three main beliefs: (1) English proficiency will facilitate their children’s pursuit of higher education; (2) speaking English will enhance their children’s job prospects; and (3) the ability to communicate with foreigners is advantageous.

Abstract

This classroom action research aims to assist students overcome their writing problems and enhance the quality of their writing using freewriting technique. Specifically, the research aimed to address two research questions: (1) Is there any improvement on students’ writing quality through the implementation of free writing technique? (2) How is students’ perception toward the implementation of free writing technique? The research was carried out at SMPN 48 Buton during the even semester of academic-year 2023/2024 with 25 participants. The study was conducted in two cycles, with three steps in each cycle: preparation, implementation, and observation. Writing tests were applied to collect data on students’ writing performance, and students’ perceptions toward the application of freewriting technique were gathered through interview. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of the research shows that: (1) students’ writing quality is successful to be improved in two cycles of the implementation of freewriting technique, and (2) in general, students regard that their writing quality improve since freewriting technique is motivated, and the techique is also effective to reduce their writing anxiety. This implies that freewriting technique is significantly effective to improve students’ writing quality.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan: 1) Bagaimana siswa mempelajari kosakata bahasa Inggris di sekolah Pedesaan dan Perkotaan; 2) Bagaimana cara guru mengajarkan kosakata bahasa Inggris di sekolah Pedesaan dan Perkotaan. Penelitian ini berfokus pada investigasi proses Pengajaran Kosakata Bahasa Inggris untuk pemula di sekolah pedesaan dan perkotaan. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMPN 12 Buton, MTSN 4 Buton, SMPN 40 Buton, SMPN 48 Buton, SMPN 4 Baubau, SMPN 18 Baubau, MTSN 1 Baubau, MTSs Al-Ikhwan Baubau. Partisipan penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas satu, dua dan tiga serta guru bahasa Inggris di sekolah pedesaan dan perkotaan. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode Grounded Theory. Pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa kosakata bahasa Inggris untuk pemula di sekolah pedesaan cukup rendah, hal ini dapat di lihat dari siswa belum mampu menyebutkan kosakata bahasa inggris dengan benar, siswa belum mampu menulis kosakata bahasa inggris sesuai dengan artinya, siswa belum mampu membaca kosakata bahasa Inggris sesuai ejaan yang benar. Peneliti menemukan kosakata bahasa Inggris di sekolah Perkotaan sangat baik, hal ini dapat di lihat dari siswa mampu menyebutkan kosakata dengan benar, siswa mampu menulis kosakata bahasa inggris sesuai dengan artinya, siswa mampu membaca kosakata bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan ejaan yang benar. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah pembelajaran kosakata bahasa Inggris pemula di sekolah pedesaan lebih rendah dibandingkan sekolah perkotaan, hal ini dapat di lihat dari tiga indikator penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris yaitu; pengucapan, ejaan dan arti kosakata.

Abstract

This confessional ethnographic study strives to reveal the sociocultural values that are suspected as trigger factors of students demotivation in studying English. The study was conducted in a junior secondary school in the Miendogunu Village, Buton, Sulawesi, one of the rural areas in Indonesia. There were 32 participants in this study (21 students, nine parents, an English teacher, and the school principal). This research relied on data gathered through in-depth interviews and observation. The data analysis covered taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and thematic analysis, specifically aimed at discerning inter-domain connections and how those connections relate to the larger cultural landscape. The results revealed three interrelated themes, namely: ethnocentric stereotype (the tendency to look down on English because it is a foreign culture), the skeptical view (doubt toward the worth of English), and slow living lifestyle (a lifestyle that encourages a slower approach to aspects of everyday life). These three sociocultural values are investigated as the trigger factors that have turned the EFL students halfhearted toward English. A complementary strategy focused on changing students mindsets is needed; they need to be aware that English, nowadays, is the language of technology and has become an added and preferable qualification for employability. To a certain degree, it is important to impart awareness to the villagers regarding the significance of preserving their indigenous culture. However, a cautious approach is necessary, as isolating themselves entirely from external cultural influences may be deemed an unwise course of action.

Abstract

Siswa SMA menghadapi keterbatasan dalam mengembangkan keterampilan kewirausahaan dan kreativitas karena minimnya program pelatihan berbasis kerajinan tangan yang dapat menghasilkan produk bernilai ekonomis. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan kewirausahaan siswa melalui pelatihan pembuatan tas dari tali kur sebagai produk kreatif bernilai jual. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi tahap perencanaan, pelaksanaan pelatihan, dan evaluasi yang berlangsung selama tiga bulan dengan melibatkan 15 siswa sebagai peserta. Materi pelatihan mencakup pengenalan usaha kreatif, teknik pembuatan produk kerajinan tali kur dengan metode makrame, serta penguatan motivasi berwirausaha. Hasil evaluasi melalui kuesioner dan observasi menunjukkan dampak positif, yaitu 87% peserta menyatakan materi sesuai kebutuhan, 80% peserta memahami materi dengan jelas, 75% peserta tertarik dengan proses pembuatan produk, dan 57% peserta terdorong untuk memulai usaha mandiri. Kegiatan ini berhasil meningkatkan minat, keterampilan, dan kesadaran siswa terhadap peluang usaha berbasis ekonomi kreatif lokal. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan pemanfaatan tali kur efektif dalam menumbuhkan jiwa kewirausahaan dan kreativitas siswa serta membuka peluang usaha produktif di lingkungan sekolah.

Abstract

Problem in this research was whether there is a positive and significant effects of teaching reading strategy and students’ learning style on reading performance. The objective of the research was to measure is there any positive significance the effect of teaching reading strategy and students’ learning style on reading performance at English education study program, Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University. This research method was survey design using path analysis approach. Population in this research was all of third semester students at English Education Study Program, Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University with total 40 students which was taken using total sampling technique. The instrument used was a questionnaire (Teaching Reading Strategy & Perceptual Learning Style) and test (TOEFL). This research found that there were: 1) the score of each lecturers’ teaching strategy questionnaire were 80.1% Reciprocal Teaching Strategy, 79% for SQ3R Strategy, 78.5% for Scaffolding Strategy, 77.3% for Think-Aloud Strategy and 75.9% for QARs Strategy. It indicated that one strategy (Reciprocal Teaching Strategy) is always category and four strategies (SQ3R Strategy, Scaffolding Strategy, Think-Aloud Strategy and QARs Strategy) are often category applied by EFL lecturers in teaching reading, 2) the average of each learning style questionnaire were 4.2 for Auditory, 4.2 for Kinesthetic and 4.0 for Visual Learning Style used by students, based on the high percentage of questionnaire, there was 85% or 34 students in major learning style category, it meant the students’ learning style was major learning style, 3) based on the high percentage of reading performance test, there was 65% or 26 students in fair category, it suggests the students’ reading performance was fair, 4) based on the result of hypothesis testing using independent sample T-test obtained fcount 7.951 and obtained significant value 0.001 < 0.005, with a positive effect 0.301 or 30.1% therefore Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that reading performance can be affected by teaching reading strategy and students’ learning style on third semester students at English Education Study Program, Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University.
