Abstract

This research departs from observations over messages contained in the advertisement slogans of consumer products, especially those using foreign languages. The aim was to find out if shifts have occurred in the translation processes of the slogans from one language to another. Data analysis was performed on the aspect of verbal (interlingual) translation of the slogansfrom English into Indonesian using Jackendoff’s Conceptual Structure.  Jakobson’s intersemiotic translation approach was used to analyze the messages of the verbal slogan translated into their visual language. The results show that translation shifts have occurred, both verbally and visually

Abstract

This study titled Management and Patterns of Cultural Inheritance in Indonesia puts Bali as the scope of area of this case study. To be more specific, the object of this study is limited to the phenomena that occur in relation to wood-based handicrafts as one of the activities which are based on creativity deemed most prominent among the Balinese community. The study was conducted using ethnography as a method of data collection, followed by a study based on the perspective of culture. This study has obtained some interesting findings, such as Balinese crafts was originally a creative effort of the community based on the integration of nature, culture, and religion. Unequal inheritance patterns in term of technical skills and insight deepening about the values established by the integration of the three elements of the craft has led the development of Balinese crafts towards the growth of the character of "craft workers", not a craft culture.

Abstract

The Digital Humanities: A Primer for Students and Scholars is written by Eileen Gardiner and Ronald G. Musto as a resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students working in the field of the digital humanities. Overall, the well-structured book discusses how technological developments have presented scholars and students with new grounds to explore the methodology, pedagogy, and public history aspects of digital history. It tries to respond to such questions as whether the Digital Humanities (DH) is a field of study or a methodology, if it is a social science, a humanistic, or a technological discipline, or whether it is the study of the interaction between computing and humanities.

Abstract

This paper presents partial results of the first year of a multi-year joint study, involving three universities in Indonesia, aiming to develop a program to train English and Indonesian teachers to teach PISA-like reading (24 teachers in junior and senior high schools in West Java, Indonesia). The study aimed to identify whether the program can help the teachers enhance their PISA-like reading ability, create PISA-like reading materials for reading practices, and teach them to their students. The program drew on principles of effective teacher professional development (Ajani, 2018; Borko, 2004; Borko et al., 2010; Darling-Hammond et al., 2017), PISA reading (OECD, 2009, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021), text-based instruction (Macken-Horarik et al., 2017), Reading to Learn Program (Rose, 2020a,b), and online teaching (Ragan, 2015). The study uses a program evaluation with the data collected from four sources, including a phase of training, pre- and post-tests, collection of PISA-like reading materials, and questionnaires distributed before and after the training program. The focus of the first year was on enhancement of teachers’ understanding and skills in different PISA-related aspects. Enhancement of their teaching capacity has not been explored, except for that prior to the training program, and this has been reported in Rahmadina and Emilia (2022). The first-year results reveal that the training program could help enhance the teachers’ ability to read, to use appropriate texts, and to construct PISA-like reading tasks. This was confirmed by the teachers’ positive responses to the program, in accordance with previous research on effective teacher professional development (TPD). It is recommended that the training program be conducted in different contexts, involving more teachers to help students learn to read and succeed in PISA reading.

Abstract

One form of implementation of the mandate of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. 1 of 2011 concerning Housing and Settlement Areas is explicitly stated in the Presidential Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 2 of 2015 concerning the National Medium Term Development Plan for 2015-2019 and implemented in the form of Kep. Director of DJCK No. 110/KPTS/DC/2016 concerning Determination of City Locations Without Slums. The decision of the Directorate General of Human Settlements became the basis for determining the location of the area that was determined to receive a program to improve the quality of slums, one of which was the NUSP-2 program. NUSP-2 as one of the slum settlement programs needs to be evaluated as a form of assessing the results of the programs that have been implemented. The evaluation carried out focused on the impact side with the scope of Physical and Non-Physical (Social and Economic) impacts and sustainability with the scope of economic, social/community and environmental sustainability, where the impact evaluation resulted in a value of 0.692 or was in the moderately impactful class, while the sustainability evaluation was at a value of 0.692. 0.43 or is in the less sustainable class. However, what is of concern is that based on the results of the analysis carried out, the side that has a large influence on the evaluation value is the side that is in direct contact with the NUSP-2 program, with examples for evaluation of physical impacts having a greater influence than non-physical and social sustainability having the greatest influence compared to sustainability environment and economy.
