Abstract

This study aimed to explore manortors as a medium for building solidarity and identity for the Mandailing community in Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province. The research method was carried out through observation of manortor performances in Menaming, Bangun Purba, and Khaiti Villages as Mandailing ethnic dominions in Rokan Hulu. The observation focused on the movement aspect of the manortor. In-depth interviews were conducted to reinforce the data obtained through the observation of the manortor and to explore how aspects of the movement in the manortor build solidarity and identity. The results showed that manortor is a dance that embodies kinship relationships with dalihan na tolu. The form of movement, standing position, and order of performance should be in line with the norms of kinship. The group members dance together with movements representing kinship relationships and strengthening kinship relationships, building solidarity and a strong self-identity.English translation.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the short story Cerita Batu through the lens of deconstruction, focusing on the reversal of hierarchical oppositions and the rejection of new hierarchical structures. The analysis identifies key binary oppositions in the text Man/Woman, Living Things/Inanimate Objects, and Happy/Sad and examines how these oppositions function within the narrative. The study highlights how the text initially presents dominant and marginal hierarchies, such as male dominance over female and human superiority over inanimate objects, which are later deconstructed. By reversing these hierarchies, the story reveals the interdependence between opposing elements: men and women, humans and stones, and happiness and sadness. The narrative demonstrates that these binary oppositions are not fixed, but fluid and interconnected, showing how meaning in the text is plural and resistant to singular interpretations. Ultimately, Cerita Batu emphasize the idea that oppositions are mutually constitutive, challenging conventional notions of dominance and subordination.

Abstract

Affection is a very important relationship in social life. Affection is manifested in various ways, one of which is performing art. This study explains the manifestation of affection between family and relatives in Mandailing culture. The research method is carried out through observation of tor-tor performances, which are performances that combine dance, music, and literature that become Mandailing culture. The results showed that affection in Mandailing culture is an important part of the kinship values of dalihan na tolu. Affection called holong is a noble value that governs relationships in kinship groups dalihan na tolu. Holong became one of the identities attached to the Mandailing community. In line with Islamic values and Mandailing cultural norms, compassion is felt with the heart and is not expressed openly either through touch or eye contact between families during tor-tor performances. The affection of family and relatives in dancing arises in response to togetherness in dancing and song verses that tell the life experiences of family and relatives.Keywords: Affection, kinship, identity, performing arts. AbstrakKasih sayang adalah hubungan yang sangat penting dalam kehidupan sosial. Kasih sayang diwujudkan dalam berbagai cara, salah satunya seni pertunjukan. Penelitian ini menjelaskan perwujudan kasih sayang antara keluarga dan kerabat di kebudayaan Mandailing. Metode penelitian dilakukan melalui pengamatan terhadap pertunjukan tor-tor, yaitu pertunjukan yang menggabungkan tari, musik dan sastra yang menjadi kebudayaan Mandailing. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kasih sayang di kebudayaan Mandailing merupakan bagian penting dari nilai-nilai kekerabatan dalihan na tolu. Kasih sayang yang disebut dengan holong merupakan nilai luhur yang mengatur hubungan dalam kelompok kekerabatan dalihan na tolu. Holong menjadi salah satu identitas yang melekat dengan masyarakat Mandailing. Sejalan dengan nilai-nilai Islam dan norma budaya Mandailing kasih sayang dirasakan dengan hati dan tidak diungkapkan secara terbuka baik melalui sentuhan ataupun kontak mata diantara keluarga selama pertunjukan tor-tor. Abstract

This research explains the family narrative in tor-tor performances as a medium of building collective memory, identity and communicating Mandailing cultural values. Research methods through narrative examination, observation of tor-tor performances, and narrative interviews. The results showed that family narratives and performance forms support each other in building collective memory, identity and communicating Mandailing cultural values. Family narratives have sequential structures and themes about the journey of family life. Meanwhile, the tor-tor form of performance supports the presence of diverse family narratives and collaborations involving the active role of families, singers, dancers and audiences
