Abstract

Background: Smoking habits enhance free radical in the body, which oxidize lipids to form malondialdehyde. One group that is vulnerable to smoking is adolescents. Red dragon fruit and red guava have the possibility as functional foods due to their vitamin and phytochemical content, which have antioxidant effects. This is an opportunity to prevent oxidative stress among adolescent smokers.Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the effect of red dragon fruit, red guava, and its combination to total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels among adolescent mild smokers.Methods: This research was an experimental study with a randomized pre-test and post-test control group design. Forty-eight subjects of male adolescent aged 16-17 years with mild smoking habits were divided into four groups: the control group (K), the intervention group with 200 grams of red dragon fruit (P1), 200 grams of red guava (P2), and the combination of both (100 grams red dragon fruit + 100 grams red guava) (P3), for 14 days. TAC examination used the DPPH method and MDA levels using the TBARS method were measured before and after the intervention.Results: After 14 days of intervention, the mean TAC was changed by -0,10±0,76 in the K group, 0,97±1,62 in the P1 group, 0,74±1,39 in the P2 group, and 0,74±1,29 in the P3 group. But the changes of TAC in all intervention groups were not significantly different from the control group (p>0,05). The mean MDA level changed by 0,229±0,371 in the K group, decreased by -0,654±0,922 in the P1 group, -0,592±0,818 in the P2 group, and -1,166±0,670 in the P3 group. The mean difference of the MDA level in all intervention groups was significantly different from the control group (p<0,05).Conclusion: Consumption of red dragon fruit, red guava, or a combination of red dragon fruit and red guava can reduce malondialdehyde levels significantly among male adolescent mild smokers. Whereas the total antioxidant capacity was changed but not significant.

Abstract

Iron deficiency can interfere with the formation of hemoglobin, causing iron deficiency anemia. If iron deficiency anemia continues during pregnancy, it can increase the risk of giving birth to a baby with stunting and anemia. This study aimed to develop a food product high in iron and protein by substituting chicken liver flour with soybean tempeh to produce a tempeh product that can be used as an alternative food to improve iron deficiency anemia. This study used a completely randomized design. The treatment in this study consisted of four levels of chicken liver flour substitution (F1=5%, F2=10%, F3=15%, and F4=20%) in making tempeh. Hedonic quality test data were statistically analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test. The data on iron level using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method and protein level using the Kjeldahl method were statistically analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test and continued with the Tamhanes test. The results of this research show that the substitution of chicken liver flour produces products with iron and protein levels at the level of 10% (1.330 mg/100 g; 18.76 g/100 g), 15% (5.355 mg/100 g; 21.36 g/100 g) and 20% (3.089 mg/100 g; 25.31 g/100 g) respectively which were higher than the control group (p<0.05). The highest iron levels were obtained in group F3 with an iron level of 5.355 mg/100, and the highest protein levels were obtained in group F4 with a protein level of 21.36 g/100 g. Based on the hedonic quality test, the substitution of chicken liver flour reduced the quality of tempeh in several parameters, namely non-white color, pungent aroma, and tasteless taste typical of tempeh, compared to the control group (p<0.05). The substitution of chicken liver flour with concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20% can increase iron and protein levels in tempe products.

Abstract

Sasaran penderita diabetes mellitus tahun 2021 di Kota Bandung sebanyak 43,761 penderita, dari jumlah tersebut sebanyak 92.78% telah menerima layanan kesehatan sesuai standar. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalsis hubungan konsumsi buah dan sayur dengan kejadian diabetes mellitus. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah cross sectional. Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah masyarakat yang berkunjung di poli umum Puskesmas Garuda. sampel diambil secara acak sederhana, jumlah sampel dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 120 responden. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah kuesioner. Analisis data menggunakan uji chi square. Hasil penelitian didapatkan sebagian besar responden tidak menderita diabetes mellitus sebesar 29,2%. 60% responden cukup mengkonsumsi buah dan sayur. Ada hubungan konsumsi buah dan sayur dengan kejadian diabetes mellitus p=0,001 dan OR 3,968 (1,828-8,614). Orang yang cukup mengkonsumsi buah dan sayur setiap harinya berpeluang 3,9 kali terhindar dari diabetes mellitus dibandingkan dengan orang yang kurang mengkonsumsi buah dan sayur setiap harinya
