Mantra in shadow puppet performances are rituals which essentially provide noble values related to human life as well as a very high aesthetic spectacle mainly in Java and Bali. In addition, they are also a complementary function of religious ceremonies particularly in several regions in Indonesia. Dharma Pewayangan is a guide consisting of law, reference, procedure, obligation, and guidance for puppeteers in carrying out their obligations when performing a shadow puppet show. Understanding and implementing Dharma Pewayangan are mandatory to puppeteers in order to circumvent a curse from Sang Hyang Catur Lokapala as a result of neglecting the wisdoms. Puppeteers chant a mantra (incantations) prior to the show until the event is concluded. The mantras (incantations) in the show serve as supplication before God, guarding oneself, arousing taksu, neutralizing bhuta-kala, and making tirta.Â
