Abstract

The flow of people and goods with the existence of globalization brought a new pattern of life. People tend to change their consumption pattern from fulfilling the basic needs to becoming consumerism; a behavior of buying goods and services that are more concerned with what is desired than what is needed. This phenomenon established a new problem called the consumerism trap; a dilemmatic situation in which we want to dismiss consumerism but the impact it causes is even more detrimental. The upcoming question will be about, is consumerism trap is increasingly escalated with globalization in this contemporary era? The author argues that globalization accelerates the pattern of consumerism. This paper portrays Nauru as the best example to support the author’s argument because it shows that Nauruans are complacent with their wealth of phosphate resources, then become lazy, dependent, and finally adopt a consumerism lifestyle. It made Nauruans trapped in spillover problems, like environmental degradation, obesity, financial flows by build shell banks, etc. To sum up, the era of globalization increasingly giving space for people to be trapped in the consumerism trap; moreover, society does not see the continued implications of consumerism. By analyzing Nauru, we learned how globalization accelerates consumerism and creating spillover effects for the country. At the end, the author gives a prescription to solve this problem by doing voluntary simplicity as the antithesis of consumerism.

Abstract

This research article aims to portray the phenomenon of how Europe’s perspective and attitudes toward migration. Race, culture, and politics all play a prominent role in Europe’s reception of migrants. This article precisely focused on the role of the European Union (EU) during the 2015 migrant crisis. As Europe faced the struggle where 1.3 million refugees and migrants illegally entered Europe by sea in 2015, compared to roughly 200,000 in 2014. Moreover, the current 2022 Ukraine war resulted in over 4.9 million refugees with 3.3 million of them having filed for temporary residence in few European countries. The author argues that European countries have responded to the issue differently, with some welcoming migrants and others rejecting them. This article founds the reasons, namely: (1) securitization within the EU, i.e., raising the issue of migration as a “matter of European security”; and (2) the phenomenon of favoritism, as evidenced by selective solidarity, racism, and anti-immigrant rhetoric. This article attests that both securitization and favoritism culture in Europe must be recalculated and used as lessons learned so that there is no bias in allowing forthcoming migrants and so that the EU continues to exist.

Abstract

Gender inequality remains a prominent and multifaceted issue in Indonesia, spanning across social, economic, and security dimensions. In the context of higher education, these disparities manifest in unequal access to opportunities, differential treatment, and limited access to marginalized gender groups. This study delves into the pressing need to establish a gender-responsive university environment that fosters inclusivity, safety, and equality for all. Focusing on the case study of employees at UPN Veteran Jawa Timur, this research employs a comprehensive mixed-methods approach, integrating surveys, focus group discussions, and qualitative interviews to assess the institution's current state of gender responsiveness. By examining policies, practices, and perceptions, it seeks to identify both the strengths and areas for improvement within the institution's gender equality framework. Furthermore, this study uses indicators of gender-responsive higher education as well as gender equality targets in sustainable development goals as a tool of analysis. This research found that the majority of respondents express the overall adequacy of gender-responsive policies in UPN Veteran Jawa Timur. However, some specific sectors need further attention and refinement, particularly regarding gender-friendly facilities such as nursing room and access for people with disability. The study also underscores the necessity of holistic efforts to navigate the intricate pathways toward a gender responsive university in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the reasons why the UK changed its immigration foreign policy. This study will explain the factors that drove the change in UK immigration policy to the Points-Based Immigration System. The research method used in this study is explanatory qualitative. This article is compiled by collecting data from books, journal articles, official government websites, and credible articles related to the topic being analyzed. After officially leaving the European Union, the UK stopped the Free Movement policy and replaced it with a new immigration policy based on points, namely the Points-Based Immigration System. This new policy, which is stricter and under the full control of the British government, is expected to reduce the high number of immigrants in the UK. After being bound by EU policies for so long, the UK is finally free to implement its own policies that are in accordance with its national interests. The findings show that changes in UK immigration foreign policy are driven by domestic factors in the form of bureaucracy, public opinion, media, interest groups, and political parties, as well as international factors in the form of global factors, regional factors, bilateral relations, and non-state actors.

Abstract

Human trafficking, particularly involving women and children, is a serious challenge for the Philippines. As a country with a high rate of child sexual exploitation in East Asia, the Philippines has sought to eradicate this crime through the ratification of the Palermo Protocol, the passage of Republic Act No. 9208 and Republic Act No. 10364, as well as the establishment of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT). This study analyzes the effectiveness of the implementation of the Palermo Protocol in the Philippines using the Domestic Salience theory to measure the extent to which international norms have been adopted in domestic policies. The results show that the Philippines successfully improved its law enforcement capacity and obtained Tier 1 status in the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in 2016. However, challenges such as limited resources, corruption, and inter-agency coordination still hinder the effectiveness of anti-trafficking policies. With a national strategy that includes prevention, victim protection, law enforcement, and international partnerships, the Philippines continues to reduce human trafficking. Despite significant progress, the study concludes that policy strengthening through cross-sector coordination, capacity building of law enforcement officials, and expansion of victim rehabilitation services are needed to ensure long-term effectiveness in combating human trafficking.

Abstract

This study explores Denmark’s shift in foreign policy, specifically its transition from a strict Zero Asylum policy to a more open approach toward Ukrainian refugees. Using Eidenfalk’s Foreign Policy Change Theory, the study examines the domestic and international factors that contributed to this policy change. The theory helps explain how both internal political pressures and external forces shaped Denmark's response. The research takes a qualitative approach, analyzing secondary data from sources like government documents, media coverage, and scholarly articles. Through qualitative content analysis, key themes were identified to understand how Denmark’s policy evolved. The findings show that domestically, strong public support for Ukrainian refugees, media narratives framing them as fellow Europeans, and political pressure all played significant roles in the shift. Internationally, factors like the global refugee crisis, EU pressure to adopt the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD), and Denmark’s relationship with Ukraine also influenced the change. The 2022 Russia-Ukraine war catalyzed this shift. In conclusion, the study reveals that Denmark’s foreign policy change was driven by a mix of domestic public opinion and international pressures, highlighting how both local and global factors interact to shape national refugee policies. This research sheds light on the broader dynamics behind foreign policy changes in times of crisis.
