Abstract

Financial difficulties commonly occur in college students' lives. Problems might be caused by a lack of understanding about managing money, such as falling into the temptation of buying unnecessary discounted goods or choice justification. The research aims to understand how mental budgeting influences purchasing discounted items and choice justification. In the study, two experiments were undertaken to explain the reaction of discount, and two others to describe choice justification (N=169 in Indonesia, N=168 in China). Mann-Whitney U and ANOVA tests were used to analyze the experiments. Mental budgeting scales were also employed in experiments 3 and 4. The results show that when individuals receive a discounted offer for luxury goods, they will fall into the temptation of buying them. This takes place because they do not want to lose the opportunity to obtain such goods at a cheap price. In addition, when individuals receive offers related to physiological needs (i.e., food), they will practice choice justification. This means that all people need to understand the concept of mental budgeting and make realistic budgets.

Abstract

The empirical limitations of the Consumer Styles Inventory (CSI) render the formation of dimensions from this measuring tool-less relevant. Scholars have attempted developing Purchase Decision Making Inventory (PDMI) measuring tool to answer cognitive and emotional processes in decision-making. This research examined the validity of the internal structure of the purchasing decision-making inventory (PDMI) measuring device in the Indonesian context. PDMI has two main dimensions, namely emotional and reasoned. The emotional dimension has five sub-dimensions: impulsivity, indebtedness, negative emotions, frustration, and hedonism. The reasoned dimension has three sub-dimensions: saving, reasoning, and information seeking. The main dimensions explain the differences in cognitive and affective processes that occur in consumers when making decisions. The internal structure of PDMI was evaluated using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and reliability analysis. The population of this study was Indonesian people aged 18-25 years (M = 20.3 years, SD = 1.55). The sample in this study was 588. The results of the CFA analysis showed that the results fit the data. The model accuracy indices used are the comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). The CFI value is 0.932, the TLI value is 0.921, and the RMSEA is 0.046. The results of this research are supported by the reliability results of each sub-dimension and the primary dimension of the PDMI measuring instrument, which has a Cronbach's alpha value ≥ 0.6 with a corrected item-total correlation (CITC) ≥ 0.3 which can be concluded that the PDMI measuring device is valid based on internal structure and reliable evidence sources.

Abstract

Increasingly tight job competition means that workers often ignore work-related fatigue conditions, which can negatively impact workers and organizations, resulting in decreased health and work effectiveness and even work accidents. In order to prevent this, proper work-related fatigue management is needed. This research examines the role of intrinsic motivation as a mediator in the relationship between organizational support and quantitative workload with work-related fatigue. This research is quantitative research with a survey method. The sampling technique used was stratified random sampling. The measuring instruments used are the Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion/Recovery Scale (OFER), the Quantitative Workload Inventory (QWI), the short version of the Survey of Perceived Organizational Support (SPOS), and the Situational Motivation Scale (SIMS). Data analysis used path analysis and bootstrapping in SmartPLS 3.0. The analysis results show no mediating role for intrinsic motivation in the relationship between organizational support and quantitative workload with work-related fatigue. A high quantitative workload triggers increased work-related fatigue, so it needs to be balanced with sufficient organizational support.

Abstract

Online learning has become a solution for the world of education, including universities, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Every student behaves differently in addressing online learning in their lives. This research aimed to explore the role of self-regulated learning on psychological distress among university students in the online learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic. Four hundred sixteen students participated online survey and completed Depression Anxiety Stress Scale – 21 and the Online Self-Regulated Questionnaire. The correlation results show that self-regulated learning negatively correlates with depression, although the level of depression is mild to moderate. Besides that, students in the third and fourth years of study found that they had a higher score of depression on online learning than the first and second years of study. Therefore, the capacity to motivate and identify the direction of self-regulated learning will make students actively participate in online learning and could adapt to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, more self-regulate learning relates to lower depression among students.

Abstract

Individuals' emotional states (i.e., happy and sad emotions) might influence the intertemporal choice process, a decision of choosing between instant alternatives with small advantages or delayed alternatives with enormous benefits, when purchasing a product. This study tested the role of emotional states in individual intertemporal choices, especially when buying clothing products. 45 active students were involved as participants in this experimental study.' The results indicated that happy and sad emotions do not significantly differ in individuals' intertemporal choices, specifically in purchasing clothing products (ꭓ2 = 5.293, p > 0.05). This study also found that intertemporal choice was influenced by gender (F = 6.431, p < 0.05). This gender difference was significant (ꭓ2 = 4.099, p < 0.05), in which female participants had a higher average delayed gratification than male participants. Even though differences in income did not significantly impact the differences in intertemporal choice (ꭓ2 = 5.962, p > 0.05), individual income influenced intertemporal choice (F = 4.381, p < 0.05), in which participants with smaller incomes tended to choose cheaper clothing product. Moreover, the system of three thinking inhibited irrationality and made students more rational when making purchase decisions in accordance with their income or pocket money.

Abstract

In recent years, cryptocurrency has garnered significant interest from investors. Herding behavior bias frequently influences the rationality of purchasing decisions in novice crypto investors. In addition, greed can affect the decision-making process regarding the nominal of investment. This study aimed to examine the role of herding behavior in novice crypto investors' purchasing decisions and assess the role of greed as a moderator. The study employed an experimental method with a posttest-only control group design. Thirty participants were selected using convenience sampling techniques and divided into two groups (experiment and control groups). Data analysis was conducted using the Mann-Whitney U test for comparison testing and PROCESS Hayes for moderation analysis. The results indicated that herding behavior played a significant role in purchasing decision-making (U = 60; p < 0.05), whereas greed did not serve as a moderator in the relationship between herding behavior and nominal decision-making (b = -0.001; CI = -0.075, 0.072; p > 0.05). Instead of relying on rational decision-making, novice cryptocurrency investors frequently succumb to herding behavior. The ambiguity of information and investors' inability to make informed decisions lead to herding behavior being perceived as the most viable option.
