Abstract

The management of rice straw (Oryza sativa) waste in Indonesia, particularly in Pasaman Regency, faces significant challenges due to the widespread practice of open burning, which harms the environment and poses health risks to local communities. Despite this, rice straw holds great potential as an organic compost material that is environmentally friendly and nutrient-rich. This study explores the use of Rhizopus oryzae, a fermentation fungus capable of accelerating the decomposition of rice straw, as an efficient, economical, and sustainable waste management solution. Through fermentation, rice straw can be converted into high-quality compost that enhances soil fertility and agricultural productivity while reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers. This technology is highly relevant in promoting sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation by lowering greenhouse gas emissions. However, field adoption still faces challenges, particularly in fermentation control and farmer outreach. Therefore, policy support, technical training, and cross-sector collaboration are essential to ensure broad and effective implementation. This approach presents a strategic solution for environmentally friendly agricultural waste management and improving farmer livelihoods in the future.

Abstract

Padang City is a large city with an area of 694.96 km² and a population of 941,639 in 2018. The waste generated in 2018 amounted to 1,313,342.7 m³ (Padang City Environmental Agency, 2018). Landfills produce a type of liquid known as leachate. Leachate is a hazardous liquid generated from the decomposition of both organic and inorganic waste at the Final Disposal Site (TPA) of waste. This liquid contains high concentrations of organic, inorganic materials, and heavy metals that have the potential to contaminate groundwater, rivers, and surface water. This study aims to analyze the quality of leachate based on the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) parameters as the main indicators of organic pollution. Samples were taken from the outlet pond of the Air Dingin TPA in Padang City, then brought to and tested at the Andalas University Water Laboratory. The results showed a COD value of 450.4 mg/L and a BOD value of 250 mg/L. These values far exceed the quality standards established in the Minister of Environment Regulation No. 59 of 2016 concerning Wastewater Quality Standards. This study indicates that leachate requires further management before being released into the environment.

Abstract

Palm oil mill liquid waste contains high organic matter and nutrients, such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Suspended Solid (TSS), and low acidity (pH). If this liquid waste is discharged directly into water bodies without treatment, it will pollute the environment and disrupt aquatic ecosystems (National Standardization Agency.2016). One of the efforts to treat liquid waste in palm oil mills can be done by aeration process. The aeration process aims to increase the level of dissolved oxygen (DO) in liquid waste so that aerobic microorganisms can effectively degrade organic matter. The aeration process can be carried out by several methods, such as using an aerator (Fitri, A., Susanto, H., & Budiaman, I. G. S. 2017).)Dissolved Oxygen (DO) Increased from 0 hours to 3.9 Mg/l, 24 hours to 5.7 Mg/l and 72 hours to 6.3 Mg/l. PH Increased from 0 hours to 4.32, 24 hours to 4.78 and 72 hours to 5.32 So the increase in DO and PH during the Aeration process is very helpful in reducing the level of pollutants in palm oil mill waste The effectiveness of the aerobic aeration process in the treatment of palm oil mill waste is able to reduce the level of TSS, COD, BOD, for TSS at 0 hours 461 m/L, 24 hours 403 m/L ,72 hours 275 m./L for COD at 0 hours 4240 m/L 24 hours 3816 m/L ,72 hours 1018 m/L for BOD at 0 hours 506 m/L, 24 hours 358 m/L ,72 hours 298 m/L.
