Abstract

Spruce and teak wood as anisotropic materials have complex behavior, particularly in the relationship between strain-rate and strength. High strain-rate compression tests between 590 s-1 and 3300 s-1 were carried out using two types of split Hopkinson pressure bar (SPHB) in order to measure the behavior of the wood along three principal axes with respect to fiber direction and growth rings. Numerical simulation using finite element software of the wood materials under high strain rates was performed and showed results with only a difference of 10% to the experimental results. The strain rate affects the strength of materials. In this case, it follows the power function, which means the higher the strain rate, the stronger the material.

Abstract

As urban growth increase, massive high-rise building construction become a critical solution. In high-rise building, column base may be subjected to very high axial load from the upper stories and may experience very large moment due to the lateral loads. As a result, the column base requires a great deal amount of reinforcement which make it very cramped. In order to prevent honeycomb as the reinforcement gap is narrow yet difficult to provide sufficient vibration during concrete casting, high performance concrete (HPC) may be the solution. One of the HPC innovations is Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC). RPC is a self-compacting type of HPC contains well graded fine and super fine aggregates with cement and pozzolanic material to strengthen the Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ) between the mortar matrix and fine aggregates. RPC may achieve high compressive strength as the mix uses low water to cement ratio, thus it introduces less void and no coarse aggregates, thus ITZ is stronger. RPC has similar characteristic as concrete, with its brittle behaviour. To avoid the brittle failure of RPC, in this study steel fibers are added into the RPC mixture. This research is conducted to examine the effectiveness of using steel fibers on the mechanical properties of Steel Fiber Reactive Powder Concrete (SFRPC). The steel fiber is aimed to increase ductility of tensile strain hardening condition by its multiple crack-bridging behavior.

Abstract

Abstract Performance-Based Design (PBD) method is widely used to design or evaluate super high-rise building against earthquake loads. The building is expected to present a certain level of performance set on FEMA 303 in response to ground motions, and should meet the target performance at Service Level Earthquake (SLE) and at Risk-Targeted Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCER). The performance level would be determined by using non-linear time history analysis and it requires non-linier parameter based on reinforcement of the structural elements. The common method proposed by Tall Building Initiative (TBI) requires the structural members are designed using response spectra at Service Level Earthquake (SLE). The problem is the ground motion and response spectra at Service Level Earthquake (SLE) are not always immediately available. In this paper, the modified seismic response coefficient (CS-M) is introduced in designing the structural members, as an initial step of Performance-Based Design (PBD), using the common response spectra of Risk-Targeted Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCER) instead of Service Level Earthquake (SLE). The performance of buildings is evaluated at Service Level Earthquake (SLE) and Risk-Targeted Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCER) to validate that design with modified seismic response coefficient (CS-M) is still in accordance with method by Tall Building Initiative (TBI). Keywords: Modified Seismic Response Coefficient (CS-M), Performance-Based Design (PBD), Risk-Targeted Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCER), Service-Level Earthquake (SLE), Tall Building Initiative (TBI).

Abstract Modular structure is a structure comprising of prefabricated modules manufactured in the factory and assembled on the construction site which can be effectively reducing construction duration, improving workmanship quality and optimizing resources. Composite modular structure may be one of solution to eliminate limitation arise from steel modular and concrete modular structures However, the use of modular structures is limited because no design codes are available, and the lack of knowledge of the characteristics and response of modular structures subjected to earthquake. Two configurations of the composite modular structure, namely the open frame and the infilled wall composite modular structures are studied. This study aims to evaluate the seismic behavior of the above-mentioned composite modular structure configurations. Structural performance factors (ductility, overstrength factor, and response modification factor), structural seismic performance parameters and failure patterns based on the plastic hinge formation hierarchy with nonlinear static pushover analysis were studied in this study to review the structural response globally. Abstract

Floods are the most frequent disasters caused by combinations of natural and anthropogenic factors. Given the increasing intensity and frequency of floods, especially in Asian mega-urban regions, effective Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies are critical. This study presents a comparative evaluation of the national flood risk assessment methods in Indonesia and China, followed by a flood risk map analysis calculated using the Chinese and Indonesian standards for flood risk assessment, specifically for a case study in Bandung City, Indonesia. We found that the Chinese standard method produces a broader spatial identification of high flood risk areas, influenced by rainfall intensity and topography, which better represents pluvial flood risks. Meanwhile, the Indonesian method produces localized high flood risk near rivers, which better represents fluvial flood risks. In the case study of Bandung City, the occurrence of pluvial floods was more dominant than fluvial floods. Therefore, the spatial accuracy of the Chinese method was slightly higher than the Indonesian method. The study emphasizes the importance of a national flood assessment method that balances accuracy, data availability, computational resources, and local/regional characteristics to cope with the increasing risk in urbanized flood-prone areas.

Abstract

The use of recycled aggregates in concrete production is an environmentally friendly alternative to reduce construction waste and the exploitation of natural aggregates. This study aims to analyze the influence of the characteristics of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) on the compressive strength of concrete. The research method involves using aggregates derived from laboratory concrete waste, which are crushed and sieved to pass through a 25 mm sieve. The physical characteristics of RCA were tested, including bulk density, sieve analysis, organic content of fine aggregates, silt content, moisture content, specific gravity, water absorption, and unhydrated cement grain (UCG) analysis. Concrete specimens were prepared with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% RCA as a replacement for coarse aggregates, and their compressive strength was evaluated at the ages of 7, 14, and 28 days. The results showed that higher proportions of RCA in the concrete mix can lead to an increase in compressive strength.

Abstract

Floating wind turbines and floating houses are innovative solutions to global challenges such as land scarcity and rising sea levels. This study investigates the dynamic responses of both structures under wave excitation. The floating wind turbine is modeled as a cantilever column with a lumped mass at the top, while the floating house is idealized as a single-story portal frame. Both structures are supported by pontoons, which are represented as beams on elastic foundations using the Winkler foundation theory. Wave loads are modeled based on linear wave theory and Froude-Krylov forces. The analysis is conducted in the time domain using the Finite Element Method and Newmark-Beta integration scheme. The results show that the floating wind turbine experiences a maximum drift of 61.986 mm, heave of 104.310 mm, and pitch of 0.141°, whereas the floating house experiences a maximum drift of 35.587 mm, heave of 60.621 mm, and pitch of 0.408°. The highest internal forces occur in the pontoon section of both structures, indicating that the pontoon plays a significant role in resisting wave loads. This study contributes to a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of floating structures and demonstrates that a simplified 2D modeling approach can be effectively used as an initial step in designing stable and efficient floating systems.
