Abstract

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional method in which students learn through facilitated problem solving. In PBL, students work in collaborative groups to identify what they need to learn to solve a problem. They engage in self-directed learning and then apply their new knowledge to the problem and reflect on what they learned and the effectiveness of the strategies used. The teacher acts to facilitate the learning process rather than impart knowledge. The goal of PBL is to help students develop 1) flexible knowledge, 2) effective problem-solving skills, 3) effective collaboration skills. This article aims to find out whether PBL can help students to think critically and how teachers implement Problem Based Learning in English class. In addition, this research was conducted in class VIII D with 30 students, there are 15 females and 15 males of SMPN 21 Kota Serang using qualitative case study method. The data was collected used observation and interview. The result of this study shows that Problem Based Learning helps students to think critically.

Abstract

Digital Storytelling (DS) is an innovative learning approach that integrates technology and digital narratives to enhance students’ engagement, critical thinking, and environmental awareness. The study explores the role of Digital Storytelling (DS) in fostering students’ ability to connect real-world issues with academic learning, particularly in language education.  This study employs an exploratory approach using qualitative research. Data is collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of students' narratives. The findings reveal that DS effectively enhances students' engagement and cognitive processing by incorporating collaborative storytelling, multimedia elements, and interactive learning experiences. DS encourages students to participate in discussions actively, express their perspectives through digital media, and build deeper connections with complex global issues beyond traditional learning approaches. This study concludes that DS is a powerful educational tool that supports independent learning, fosters meaningful engagement, and aligns with the Merdeka Curriculum’s vision of equipping students with competencies relevant to 21st-century education.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using the visualization strategy on students’ reading comprehension in tenth grade at one senior high school in Serang City, Banten Province. This research used quasi-experimental design. The population in this research was all tenth grades students while the samples were from class X MIPA 4 as the experimental class and X MIPA 5 as the control class. The two classes were selected using purposive sampling. To obtain data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test as instruments consisting of 40 multiple choice items. The data obtained from both tests were analyzed using the T-test. The results of the post-test average scores show a significant increase between the pre-test and post-test. The average score in the pre-test of the experimental class is 60.5 while the control class got 59.5. In addition, the average score in the post-test experimental class is 80.33 while the control class is 72.00. The hypothesis tests reveal that sig. 2 tailed is 0.001 while the determined alpha (α) is 0.05 (5%). It means that sig. ≤ α or 0.001 ≤ 0.05. Therefore, it can be said that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Thus, the visualization strategy is effective on students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

Learning basic English requires a strong command of vocabulary.  Junior high school students are expected to have a basic command of English vocabulary.  However, many junior high students still lack sufficient vocabulary. The purpose of this study was to see if the anagram word game was successful in improving vocabulary knowledge among seventh-grade students during the academic year 2024-2025. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group design.  The experimental group was class 7D, and the control group was class 7E, both of which included 35 pupils.  This study employed a basic random sampling approach. The instrument of this research was a test. It consisted of 15 questions in multiple-choice form for the pre-test and the post-test. The researcher prepared a worksheet as well. After the data was collected, the data analysis was done through the normality test, homogeneity test, and independent samples T-test. The results showed that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous. Moreover, the independent sample T-test sig. (2- tailed) was 0.029, which was lower than alpha 0.05. It showed that the anagram word game is effective for students’ vocabulary mastery in the seventh grade.
