Abstract

Corrosion in the pipeline can cause leaks so crude oil directly pollutes the ocean ecosystem. Therefore, proper preventive methods are needed, such as using inhibitors. So far, the corrosion inhibitors used in the petroleum industry are of an inorganic type which can cause new problems such as toxicity to the environment and endanger human health. This paper describes an organic inhibitor based on sodium silicate obtained from rice husks through a synthetic method. The source of this inhibitor is very abundant in nature and the silica content is relatively high, around 86.90-93.70%. This inhibitor from rice husk, apart from having a good ability to reduce corrosion rates, also has the potential to be produced commercially.

Abstract

Highlights: Certain variables are known to be risk factors associated with the outcome of lower extremity amputation among diabetic foot patients. The patient population was observed to be slightly female-biased, with a high prevalence of older age, abnormally high blood sugar and HbA1c, and a history of nephropathy, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Prior history of vascular diseases, prior amputation history, and heavy smoking were observed but not as prevalent.   Abstract Introduction: This study aimed to find the general distribution of certain variables as risk factors for lower extremity amputation among diabetic foot patients at the Inpatient Ward of the Department of Internal Medicine, Dr. Soetomo General Academic Hospital, Surabaya, from 2019 to 2020. Methods: This was a descriptive-retrospective study using data from medical records. The International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 was used to calculate the distribution. Results: The mean ± SD of age was 55.38 ± 7.503 years old and was slightly female-biased. The median (min-max) blood sugar level was 212.00 (85–446) mg/dL. Fifteen out of 16 patients had an HbA1c beyond 7.0%. The body mass index (BMI) of most patients was between normal and overweight, with a mean ± SD of 24.018 ± 4.1827. Fifteen percent of patients were smokers. Strokes were present in 3.9% of patients, cardiovascular diseases were present in 13.73% of patients, prior lower extremity amputation (LEA) history was present in 15.7% of patients, hypertension was present in 49% of patients, and dyslipidemia was present in 13 of 15 patients. The mean estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 70.15 ± 34.498 mL/min/1.732. Conclusion: Older age, high blood sugar, high HbA1c levels, nephropathy, dyslipidemia, and hypertension had a high prevalence. Smoking, cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and prior amputation had a low prevalence. Gram-negative bacterial infection was observed in almost all reported patients. ABI results were either mostly not assessable or abnormally high. Most of the patients' Wagner gradings were in the worst category.

Abstract

The disease known as esophageal varices is usually caused by portal hypertension. Portal hypertension is most commonly caused by extrahepatic portal vein thrombosis and other conditions, such as cardiac problems or hepatic cirrhosis. Clinical manifestations of esophageal varices can include melena, haematemesis, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Effective venous pressure reduction is achieved via the distal splenorenal shunt. We acquired the literature for our review from PubMed and Google Scholar. The search was done in English using terms that indicated a connection between improvements in bone grafting methods and the restoration of alveolar clefts. To expand the search results, we also looked through the papers cited in the literature. Almost all of the five gathered articles demonstrated that the distal splenorenal shunt (DSRS) is a beneficial surgical treatment that effectively avoids postoperative PH issues. Finally, DSRS is presented as a surgical long-term treatment for variceal esophageal reflux disease and portal hypertension. Because DSRS selectively decompresses the venous collaterals around the stomach and lower esophagus, it is a safe and effective therapy choice for decreasing bleeding over nonselective shunting surgeries as a selective shunt.

Abstract

Introduction: An arteriovenous (AV) shunt is an anastomosis between vein and artery made in a surgical procedure as vascular access for patients with end-stage renal disease that are projected to undergo hemodialysis. Unfortunately, AV shunt failure remains a significant clinical problem for hemodialysis patients. In general, the cause of most early AV shunt failure is still unknown, but the quality of the blood vessels is suspected as a factor. This study aimed to determine the correlation between blood vessel diameter and the success of AV shunt surgery. Methods: This study is a cross sectional study that uses a descriptive-analytic design. The samples were obtained from the patient’s medical records with the total sampling technique of all patients who have undergone AV shunt surgery from January 2019 – December 2020 at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital which matches the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Patients’ blood vessel diameter measurement is divided into four categories which are <2 mm, 2 - <4 mm, 4 - <6 mm, and ≥6 mm. From a total of 62 patients, the highest successful surgery rate is carried out in patients with a vein diameter of 2 - <4 mm (77.59%) and artery diameter of 2 - <4 mm (63.79%). The results of the Chi-Square analysis found no significant correlation between vein diameter (p=0.769) or artery diameter (p=0.922) and the success of AV shunt surgery at Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya 2019-2020. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study did not find a correlation between the intraoperative blood vessel diameter and the technical success of AV shunt surgery.
