Abstract

Background:  For centuries, newspapers have delivered news to the reading public informing important events of a day. Specifically, the political news nowadays is more relaxed and popular than other sections, not to mention that it is also presented in an interesting and serious manner.Purpose: This research aims to classify and determine the verbs whether they are finite or non-finite.Design and methods: The subjects of the research are political news of “The Jakarta Post” newspaper which have taken and collected from two articles published on Monday, January 27th, 2020 and Tuesday, January 28th, 2020, with the focus on news related to “Donald Trump’s issues between Israeli and Palestinians”. The method used in the research is descriptive qualitative methodology. The main theory of this research are Greenbaum and Nelson (2009), Burton-Roberts (2011), and Lobeck and Denham (2014). The steps in analyzing the data include: (1) collecting the data, (2) categorizing the collected data into their own classifications, (3) analyzing the data, (4) determining the data whether they are finite or non-finite verbs, and finally (5) concluding the data.Results: The results of the research shows that from the total of two hundred and seventy-two findings, there are one hundred and twenty-eight data of finite verbs (47%) and one hundred and forty-four data of non-finite verbs which then are divided into thirty-one –to infinitives (12%), twenty-six bare infinitives (10%), twenty-three passive participles (8%), thirty –ing participles (11%), twelve passive participle forms of be (4%), nine progressive participle forms of be (3%), and thirteen perfect participle forms of have (5%).

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui proses terbentuknya dan memahami perbedaan antara suffiks stata I dan II dalam morfologi leksikal. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan analisis isi (Content Analysis). Penulis mengumpulkan data tentang kata yang memiliki suffks infleksi dan derivasi dalam cerita pendek The Queen of Spades and Other stories by Aleksandr Pushkin. Teknik yang dilakukan untuk mendapatkan data adalah sebagai berikut: (1) mencatat data pada ranah kata yang memiliki suffiks infleksi dan derivasi (2) mencari efek dari proses terbentknya suffiks tersebut terhadap kata yang diikutinya (3) membuktikan data yang telah ditemukan dan menjelaskannya berdasarkan ilmu morfologi yang diambil dari teori Katamba (1993). Dari analisis tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa dari delapan objek data, terdapat 3 data yang berjenis strata I dan 5 data yang berjenis strata II. Penelitian ini dilakukan agar kita memahami proses terbentukna jenis-jenis suffiks dengan segala efek yang ditimbulkan terhadap kata yang diikutinya.

Abstract

Tugas adalah salah satu komponen penilaian terhadap prestasi mahasiswa yang ada dalam perguruan tinggi di setiap mata kuliah. Bentuk penugasan terhadap mahasiswa bisa dilakukan dengan berbagai bentuk, salah satunya dengan tugas kelompok pembuatan video analisis pengajaran terhadap satu topic tertentu. Topik terpilih adalah tentang pengubahan adjective clause ke dalam adjective phrase atau sebaliknya. Pola ini akan dicari dari berbagai objek data sesuai dengan apa yang mereka pilih dan hal itu bisa berupa lirik lagu, subtile dari sebuah film, atau artikel tertentu. Penelitian yang berjudul Adjective Phrase pada Tugas Video Pembelajaran Mahasiswa Semester 3 Sastra Inggris menghadirkan paparan dari analisa yang dilakukan mahasiswa semester 3. Dari hasil pembahasan, hasil analisa yang diperoleh adalah sebanyak 29 kemunculan dengan rincian 24 temuan yang tepat dan 5 yang kurang tepat.

Abstract

The need to be able to understand what other people convey is very important for humans as social beings. Humans communicate through words that have forms and meanings that contain ideas, intentions, or emotions. This research was written to find out the meaning in the form of an action of a word form, namely a dynamic verb when it is associated with the whole sentence. Dynamic verbs and their types that will be analyzed are taken from the popular series, Peaky Blinders Season 1 Episode 1 and Episode 2. The writer took thirty data to be the object of the analysis. The qualitative method is the method used in the preparation of this study based on Saeed (2016) who divides dynamic verbs into four types namely, durative-punctual and telic-atelic as the main theory. The findings were: three data were declared as durative-atelic with a percentage of 10%, ten data were declared as punctual-telic with a percentage of 33.3%, and seventeen data were declared as durative-telic with a percentage of 56.7%. There are three positions from the findings, namely durative-telic as the most type, punctual-telic in the middle position, and durative-atelic as the least.

Abstract

This study examines how conjunctions are used in BBC news articles, with a particular focus on the article titled “Taylor Swift is TIME’s 2023 Person of the Year”. By identifying different types of conjunctions, this study categorizes them into external and internal types and analyses their role in ensuring sentence coherence. Conducted over six months at STBA JIA, this study adopts a descriptive qualitative method and is based on Halliday and Hasan (1976) theory of grammatical cohesion. The findings indicate that simple additive conjunctions are the most frequent, accounting for 33.33% of all instances. Temporal conjunctions follow, with 29.16% for simple types and 8.4% for complex types. Among the classifications, external conjunctions dominate at 87.5%, reflecting the emphasis on real-world connections and events presented in the news.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find types of morpheme such as roots, stems, and bases in The Hike short story by T. Albert and to find the formation types of morpheme through affixation processes. This research is used descriptive qualitative method, while the data were collected by close reading and observing the words that contains inflection or derivation in “The Hike” short story by T. Albert. This research used the theory of Katamba for analyze types of morpheme. Based on the result of representative data, the stems found in the short story are 31 and the bases found in the short story are 9. All of the words chosen in this research are words that were easily understood by the readers. The formation types of morpheme can be determined through prefix or suffix attached to the word which its affix contain inflection or derivation.
