Teaching grammar had been a crucial aspect of foreign language teaching because grammatical competence is important for communication. However, learning grammar is difficult for most Indonesian students because of the monotonous techniques implemented by the teachers. Snowball throwing is one of the creative techniques in teaching grammar. Further, tense is one of the objects to learn by students in structure. Therefore, based on the description above, the aims of this study were to describe the implementation of snowball throwing technique in teaching grammar, the students’ response towards the implementation of the snowball throwing technique, and the benefits of applying the technique. The method applied in conducting this study was descriptive qualitative analysis. Particularly, the participants of this study were 100 first semester students of English department in Universitas Pamulang taking the subject of Basic Grammar. In order to support the study finding, the writers taught grammar using snowball throwing technique, and the participants were selected based on the purposive sampling. The data were achieved from classroom observation and students’ interview through questionnaire. Further, the findings showed that there were nine stages in implementing snowball throwing in teaching grammar. The stages consisted of preparing teaching material, forming group, explaining the material to the leader of the group, re-explaining the material to the members of the group, formulating question, tossing the ball, answering questions, evaluating teaching and learning process, and giving conclusion. After finishing the learning, the writers distributed the questionnaire. These instruments were administered to analyse and obtain the findings of study. Practically, the writers expected that the study will enrich the benefits of snowball throwing technique in learning grammar, such as improving students’ comprehension in learning grammar, creating enjoyable learning atmosphere, developing students’ cooperation skill, and increasing students’ participation in the class.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the types of politeness strategies and the factors that influence their use in a video interview between Zane Lowe and Taylor Swift entitled “Taylor Swift’s Songwriting Process on evermore”. The theory used to answer the two research problems was Brown & Levinson (1987), and the qualitative method was used as the research method. The result indicates that there are 41 utterances containing politeness strategies, which are divided into 1 bald on record, 30 positive politeness, 9 negative politeness, and 1 off record. The strategy found in bald on record is no face threat minimization. Furthermore, it was found that Zane and Taylor used various sub-strategies of positive politeness, which consist of 6 exaggerating, 8 giving gifts to the hearer, 8 presupposing, raising, and asserting common ground, 1 including S and H in the activity, 1 be optimistic, 1 intensifying interest to the hearer, 2 joking, 2 noticing, attending to the hearer, and 1 seeking agreement. For negative politeness, the sub-strategies used are 7 questions and hedge and 2 apologize. Finally, for off record, use contradictions. Therefore, the most dominant strategy is positive politeness with the sub-strategy of giving gifts to the hearer and presupposing, raising, and asserting common ground. Furthermore, it was found that payoff and social distance are two factors that influence the use of politeness strategies. The payoff factor appears in 40 utterances and social distance 4 utterances. Thus, it can be stated that Zane and Taylor want to establish a friendly, relaxed, and positive conversation and strengthen closeness. The payoff factor also implies that both want to satisfy each other’s face.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a fundamental component of academic success, yet bilingual students often face distinct challenges in this area, particularly in contexts where the language of instruction differs from their home language. This qualitative study investigates the reading comprehension difficulties encountered by bilingual primary school students in Indonesia, drawing on the experiences and insights of 20 classroom teachers from Tangerang Selatan, Banten. Through semi-structured interviews, the study identifies key barriers to comprehension including limited vocabulary, language interference, and low parental involvement—factors often exacerbated by socioeconomic constraints and large family sizes. The study also explores the impact of these difficulties on students’ performance in other subjects, as well as the strategies teachers employ to mitigate these challenges. Teachers propose solutions such as adapting textbooks, increasing family engagement, providing professional development in bilingual education, and enhancing early childhood programs. These findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of bilingual students' literacy development in Indonesia and underscore the need for context-sensitive educational interventions.

Abstract

EFL learners make efforts to learn speaking skills in order to communicate in the global world. Through speaking, they are able to express their feelings and thoughts. However, there are always some challenges faced by ELF learners in learning speaking, so that teachers play critical functions as they are most commonly used as prompters as well as feedback providers to motivate them to speak. The purposes of this study were to analyze the teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking to 29 students at SDIT Darul Qur'an Mulia, as well as to recognize the impacts of the strategies implemented. The writers applied qualitative research, and the case study was chosen as the design of study. To collect data, the writers conducted classroom observations to find out the teaching speaking strategies used in classroom teaching. Then, the writers conducted interview to discover the strategies’ impacts on students speaking skills by delivering questions to the teacher. As a result, there were seven types of strategies implemented to teach speaking, namely live listening, writing task, task repetition, drilling, dialogue, discussion, and conversation strategies. Further, based on the interview results, students showed positive responses to the implemented speaking strategies. Moreover, the impacts of the teacher's speaking strategies discovered include encouraging students to think positively, get more involved in learning, improve their speaking skills, and enjoy the learning process more. Therefore, the results suggest that incorporating interactive and student-centered approaches should be considered in teacher training and curriculum development to enhance students’ speaking skills.
