Abstract

Jatiluwih, recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2012, attracts significant tourist attention. Despite its burgeoning development, the village faces challenges due to a lack of adequately trained human resources. Predominantly, educational attainment in the village is restricted to the secondary level, which limits management knowledge and skills among the residents. The Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method, which involves engaging community groups in the examination of rural conditions, has been employed to address these challenges. This approach seeks to empower non-productive groups to enhance the overall capacity, knowledge, skills, and well-being of Jatiluwih's community, thereby fostering sustainable human resource development and improved socio-economic conditions.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the external conflicts faced by the main characters in the movie Elemental: Forces of Nature. External conflict is a struggle between a character and an outside force. This force can be another character, society, nature, or a physical obstacle. It's when a character faces challenges that come from their environment or other people, rather than from their own mind or emotions. The objective is to categorize the different types of external conflicts encountered by the characters. Data analysis was conducted using Kenney’s (1966) theory. The data obtained were collected through observation and note-taking, which involved watching the movie and marking parts that expressed the conflict. The data was analyzed using qualitative method and presented descriptively. This study uncovers various external conflicts that the characters face in Elemental: Forces of Nature movie. These conflicts predominantly occur between Ember and Wide, the main characters and their surrounding environment. The findings illustrate how the main characters' interactions with external forces shape their journey and development within the storyline. By categorizing these conflicts, the study provides a deeper understanding of the character dynamics within the movie

Abstract

This study analyze the psychological aspects of the secondary characters, namely the Red Queen and the White Queen in the film Alice through the Looking Glass (2016). This study focuses on how the differences of their Id, Ego, and Superego explains their behavior and how they strategize to resolve their conflicts. This study aims to explore the psychological aspects that shape character development and its relevance to narrative conflict resolution. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, using observation and recording techniques to collect data. Data sources include films and their transcripts from script.com written by Linda Woolverton. Data collection was carried out by watching and analyzing films, capturing important scenes, and interpreting character actions based on theoretical frameworks. The theory by Sigmund Freud (1923) was applied to categorize examples of Id, Ego, and Superego in each character, while the theory of conflict management model by Thomas and Kilmann (1970) used to analyze how the two sisters resolve their problems. The findings reveal that the Red Queen is dominantly driven by the Id, with 8 data reflecting impulsive and vengeful behavior rooted in unresolved childhood trauma. In contrast, the White Queen is governed by the Superego, with the 4 data displaying moral values ??such as wisdom and empathy. Their conflict is resolved through collaborative strategies, emphasizing a shared recognition of past mistakes that led them to become enemies. This study contributes to the understanding of psychological character development in film by demonstrating the interplay of internal psychological dynamics and their role in shaping narrative structure. It highlights how Freud’s framework and conflict resolution theory provide important insights into character motivations and how the resolution of these conflicts can provide a broader perspective on the significance of psychology in storytelling and film analysis.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of figurative language expressing romantic infatuation in selected songs by Sabrina Carpenter. It employs a descriptive qualitative method and applies Knickerbocker and Reninger’s (1974) theoretical framework to examine six types of figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, irony, and symbol. The study aims to analyze how these figurative elements function semantically to convey emotional depth and thematic meaning, particularly in relation to romantic infatuation. The data were obtained from purposively selected song lyrics based on their emotional relevance. The findings reveal 25 figurative expressions in total, with metaphor being the most frequently used, followed by hyperbole, simile, symbol, personification, and irony. Functionally, these expressions are primarily used to depict emotional pain, intensify feelings, express longing, and evoke personal memories. These results indicate that Sabrina Carpenter’s lyrics utilize figurative language as a meaningful semantic tool to express complex emotional experiences, especially those connected to romantic feelings and vulnerability.
