Abstract

This study investigates the use of Indonesian language in entertainment programs on national TV channels. Entertainment programs which dominate the Indonesian TV channels show the variation of Indonesian language in high degree. The variations were described in the diction used and also the morphological processes of the words uttered by the actors or actresses who are involved in the communication process. TV program has a big impact to the Indonesian language, as what Pastika (2008) stated that the used of pidgin language has lessen the quality of Indonesian. From the samples of entertainment programs it was found that the dictions were dominated by the use of non-standard form and slang. The morphological variations occur in the used of affixes such as prefix, suffix, and  simulfiks (combination of prefix and suffix) ; (1) prefix meng- becomes ng-/nge-, (2) prefix ter- becomes ke-. (3) sufix -in and sufiks -i, (4) combination of  meng- + -kan becomes nge- + -in, and combination of di- + -kan becomes di- + -in  Besides affixation, the other morphological process are clipping and blending. The used of non-standard form and slang which dominate the utterance of the actors and actresses has also influenced the used of Indonesian language in real communication of the Indonesian society. It is because there is a big tendency that the audience will imitate their idols   Key words: diction, morphological process, affix, entertainment, and Television

This condition can be seen in the use of bahasa in mass media, especially the use of bahasa in Television program. The domination of non standard form has given bad effect to the standard language, such as the quality and the quantity of the standard language’s domain become lessen. Due to those problems, good coordination between the government, society, and mass media are required in developing Indonesian through language planning.   Key words: language maintenanace, language planning, mass media, televisión  and entertainment program

Abstract

Abstract   Throwing verbs in Balinese language have several lexicon variations which show differences in the meaning context. Different mentions depend on what is used to throw, the extent of the throw, the target of the throw, and the effects caused by the throw. This verb analysis is examined based on the Natural Semantics Metalanguage (NSM) approach which is a modern semantic study initiated by Wierzbicka (1996) which aims to describe the lexical, grammatical, and illocutionary meaning of a language. The results obtained that throwing verbs can be divided into two groups, namely based on the target throwing (nyabat, nyampar, nylampar, nylémpang, nimpug, and medut), and without target throwing (nguerang and ngentungang), verbs meaning 'throwing' in Balinese only has one prototype, that is, the prototype of action and this prototype also only has one default meaning type, namely the type of doing: thrown, and semantic verb structure which means 'throwing' in Balinese has a syntactic pattern NSM X does something at Y and Y thrown by X.   Keywords : throwing verbs, Balinese language, MSA

Abstract

This paper tries to describe the modification of peer assessment and internet browsing as a learning model in translation classroom. It includes the procedures applied in the classroom so that the lecturers in translation class can adopt the model and offer a comprehensive learning situation through the use of peer assessment and internet. The modification is a classroom management strategy to be used in delivering translation course for the English department students. The proposed learning model is encouraged by the benefits of peer assessment (Spiller, 2012).  and the use of internet in the practice of translating. Here, the modification is expected to create an entirely different atmosphere in translation course.  The three key points in this paper are classroom management strategy (Brophy in Korpershoek et al., 2014) peer assessment and internet browsing. Peer assessment is combined with internet browsing as the implementation of classroom management strategy with the purpose of providing the English department students an innovative learning model when they join translation course. By innovative, it means that translation course offered to English Department students is not merely centered on the lecturer’s assessment but on peer assessment, which is modified with internet browsing.

Abstract

The COVID-19 virus is a new virus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The virus is transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets of an infected person and touching surfaces contaminated with the virus. COVID-19 patients in Indonesia continue to grow. The Indonesian government has made efforts to break the chain of the spread of the COVID-19. One of them is by creating COVID-19 public service advertisements. Public service advertisement plays an important role in this pandemic to spread positivity which can motivate people to survive in this difficult time. This study aims at analyzing the ideology within COVID-19 public service advertisements by analyzing the meaning of verbal and visual signs used in those advertisements. The data were taken from five selected posters of COVID-19 public service advertisements. The data were collected by observation method and analyzed by qualitative method using theory of Semiotic proposed by Barthes (1998) and theory about ideology by Storey (2009). The analysis is presented in informal method. Our finding shows there are various ideologies used in COVID-19 public service advertisements, such as: prevention is better that cure, the ideology of being cooperative, responsible, productive and optimistic in facing COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 public service advertisements generally deliver a massage that together we can defeat COVID-19.

Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of how information may be lost, added, and skewed in the English-Indonesian translation of noun phrases in the novel The Valley of Fear. This study utilized descriptive qualitative method through note-taking technique. Nida’s principles of translation were applied to investigate how these three principles occur. The results showed that loss, addition, and skewing were found with several classifications, namely (1) omission of adjectives and indefinite quantifiers as well as different grammatical points of view for loss of information, (2) different linguistic and cultural aspects for addition of information, and (3) deviation of meaning and the choice of closest natural equivalence for skewing of information. Of the 507 cases found, addition of information occurs on the highest percentage, i.e. 54,81% (278 data), loss of information takes 41,42% (210 data) and skewing of information takes the lowest percentage, i.e. 3,74% (19 data). These findings indicate that actually loss, addition and skewing take place in translation of noun phases from English into Indonesian for the sake of finding naturalness without neglecting the accuracy of transferring meaning.

Abstract

This qualitative research utilizes the Teun A. van Dijk’s critical discourse approach and aims to describe 3 main dimension of text, they are text in macro structure, super structure, and micro structure of social cognition as well as social context in daily newspaper Bali Post with headlines entitled ‘Reklamasi Teluk Benoa Mematikan Ekonomi Rakyat’ published on 16th February 2016. The technique used in collecting data is Sudaryanto’s observation method and taking note. Furthermore, this research uses van Dijk’s approach in analyzing data. The findings show the result as follows: 1) text can describe the context into supra structure level, which means macro structure and micro structure are formed by the facts occurred in society. It is reflected with the lexical choices using metaphorical expression that is described persuasively by hyperbolical language. 2) From social cognitive point of view, reporters acknowledged what is happening so well since they are trying to persuade the readers to refuse the government policies related with the reclamation of Benoa Bay, yet still following the journalism code of ethics; 3) Based on social context analysis, there are pros and contras from society who support and refuse the government policies, and there is industrialist involvement in taking action onto the reclamation.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out and to describe the meaning of the verbal and visual signs in public service advertisements. The data were taken from the internet, which have included the verbal and visual signs. There were two theories applied in this study.  The theory of Semiotics proposed by Saussure (1983) and the theory of meaning by Leech (1981). The process of collecting data was observation method. Through the analysis it was found that verbal and visual signs have important rules to make attractive and good advertisement. In term of verbal sign, these advertisements consist of the text which has an excellent word choice to attract the reader’s interests. Meanwhile, from the visual sign, these advertisements represent unique picture which is to support verbal sign in order to make it easier for reader to understand the context of an advertisement. Overall, the use of verbal and visual sign in the advertisement is really important to share the message of the advertisement and also to attract the readers’ attention.
